While negotiations continue in Congress to reach a deal to avert a partial government shutdown, there is virtually no chance a vote will happen Friday night -- all but assuring there will be a government shutdown at midnight. The House has adjourned, and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn says there will be no vote Friday night in the Senate.Barring any very unexpected change, the third government shutdown of the year will happen.Vice President Mike Pence, budget director Mick Mulvaney and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were on Capitol Hill on Friday afternoon meeting with senators, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, about finding a solution. The President has repeatedly said he is unwilling to accept anything less than billion for his long-promised border wall. But the fact that the billion border wall is viewed as a measure that would be impossible to pass in the Senate indicates that votes aren't there on the Hill to meet the President's demand.Funding for roughly a quarter of the federal government expires at midnight, including appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and other parts of the government. 1266

Voting is underway in nine states, as well as in the District of Columbia, Tuesday as a pandemic, protesting and even curfews engulf American society. Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, D.C., New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Rhode Island, and South Dakota head to polls today for primary elections. Why this primary mattersWhile President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, as the presumptive nominee, have both secured their party's nomination for president, states are also voting on nominees for congressional and state races. Idaho has already voted in the 2020 Idaho Democratic primary, which took place on March 10, 2020. But voters head to the polls Tuesday to vote in local and state elections. Most notably Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a controversial conservative 795

We all know that leaving our dogs in the car on a hot sunny day for a long period of time is a bad idea. Temperatures can rise faster than we realize, putting our pets’ health and lives at risk.William Loopesko says he’s created a tool to help with just that.“I live in Colorado with my dog, Clovis. And Clovis and I enjoy hiking in the mountains, camping, etc, but that requires taking him in the car,” Loopesko says.Long car rides mean the occasional—and required—pit stop.“So, I wanted to have a way to be able to check on him and know that he’s always OK when I can’t be there with him,” he says.Loopesko created “PuppTech,” a device for your car that measures temperature and humidity levels.“It tells you the heat index, transmits all that data over a cellular connection, so I can at any time pull up how Clovis is doing on my phone.”Clovis is a 7-year-old male Labrador retriever, and Loopesko says his “comfortable” temperature range is anywhere between 41 and 72 degrees. The temperature ranges vary depending on the breed, sex, and age of the dog.“If it was above the 84 degrees for Clovis, I would be getting a text message every 5 minutes saying, ‘Hey it’s too hot. Hey it’s too hot. Hey it’s too hot.’”Decals on car windows let others know that a dog’s health is being monitored while an owner is away. But experts say an app should never replace common sense.“I worry that it could be a little bit of a false sense of security for some people,” says veterinarian Dr. Leslie Longo with Denver’s VCA Firehouse animal hospital.“I think you still have to be mindful if you’re leaving your dog in the car that it could still get hot, something could go wrong.”Loopesko says he wouldn’t disagree, but he says the app gives people one more tool for those times when owners just don’t have a choice.“If dogs were allowed to go everywhere, then our product wouldn’t need to exist,” Loopesko says.Loopesko says PuppTech is already being shipped out to its crowdfunders, and he expects it’ll be available to the general public before the end of the year. 2069

Two GOP governors are offering up their states to host the Republican National Convention, a day after President Donald Trump demanded assurances from North Carolina’s Democratic governor that the convention can go forward in August despite coronavirus fears. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp sent an open plea to Trump on Tuesday to consider his state as an alternate site. Kemp’s offer was followed by one from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, The convention is set to gather more than 2,500 delegates and thousands more guests, press and security officials. Plans have been underway for more than a year to hold it in Charlotte. 628

When Angela Walker went through her son's school folder, she was shocked to find what the fifth grader had been working on in class.A social studies assignment from Blades Elementary School in Oakville, Missouri, had asked some students, including her biracial son, to imagine that they work in the slave trade. Then it prompted them to set a price for a slave."You own a plantation or farm and therefore need more workers. You begin to get involved in the slave trade industry and have slaves work on your farm. Your product to trade is slaves.Set your price for a slave. _____________ These could be worth a lot.You may trade for any items you'd like," one of the questions in the exercise read. That question was one among 12 that school Principal Jeremy Booker said "attempted to address market practices."Other questions asked students to set a price for items such as a bushel of grain, a piece of lumber and a jug of milk. At the end of the exercise, students were asked to reflect on a free market economy and whether they'd consider themselves wealthy given the money and items they had left over."As part of both the Missouri Learning Standards for fifth-grade Social Studies and the fifth-grade Mehlville School District curriculum, students were learning about having goods, needing goods and obtaining goods and how that influenced early settlement in America," Booker wrote in a letter sent to families at the school on Monday."Some students who participated in this assignment were prompted to consider how plantation owners traded for goods and slaves."Assignment was 'culturally insensitive'The assignment was "culturally insensitive," Booker wrote, and he said the teacher had expressed "significant remorse."As the Mehlville School District continues to investigate, the teacher has been placed on administrative leave, the district confirmed to CNN. Booker also wrote that he was working to train all teachers and staff at the school about "cultural bias.""Also, I am working with district leadership to provide all Blades teachers and staff with professional development on cultural bias in the near future," he wrote."We are working together to ensure all students and families feel valued and respected at Blades Elementary."Chris Gaines, Mehlville School District superintendent, apologized for the assignment on Tuesday."Asking a student to participate in a simulated activity that puts a price on a person is not acceptable," Gaines wrote in a statement. "Racism of any kind, even inadvertently stemming from cultural bias, is wrong and is not who we aspire to be as a school district. I am sorry and disappointed that this happened in our school."NAACP hopes to meet with school officialsWalker, who is a teacher herself, told 2765
