The city manager for Alameda, California, said a formal investigation is underway following the arrest of a man dancing in a street as part of his exercise routine.The man, Mali Watkins, was charged with resisting arrest. Why he was arrested in the first place is unclear.On May 23, two officers from Alameda Police approached the man after police received a report that a man was dancing in the street. When police arrived, they discovered Mali dancing in the street.When asked why he was dancing, Mali stated it was part of his exercise routine.After Mali began to walk away, videos show officers grabbing Mali by the wrist and detaining him. Mali was told if he resisted, he would be charged with resisting arrest, which is what happened.The city of Alameda said that the man is a resident of the city and is African American.“At this time, I do not know the reasons why the initial officers approached the call the way they did. I am hopeful that an investigation will provide better understanding to that question,” City Manager Eric Levitt said.In the last few days, the city has released body warn camera footage from the incident, in addition to a call into the police’s non-emergency line. Latinos are three times more likely to get the virus, according to a Johns Hopkins study. Latino voters recently named the novel coronavirus as a top concern during a Pew Research study.A California doctor has taken a proactive approach to help his community in the state’s Central Valley stop the spread of the disease and help prevent the economic distress the virus can bring.California’s Central Valley, also known as the “Bread Basket of America,” is where most of the food in the United States comes from. It is here where thousands of Latinos work under extreme conditions like triple degree heat, poor air quality, and long hours to put food on your table. The California Department of Public Health shows that nearly half of the deaths in the Central Valley area from the Latino community. They also account for more than 60 percent of the cases.“If there is no one to pick in the fields, if there is not one to pack the meat, which feeds a majority of the country, then the whole country would definitely feel it,” said Dr. Juan Bautista, the medical director at Bautista Medical Center.Dr. Bautista is part of the 60 percent of Latinos that got the virus. Although being relatively healthy, his underlying asthma condition made fighting the virus tough. He was hospitalized for six days.Dr. Bautista says Latinos are high-risk because of the prevalence of diabetes and asthma in the community.“Diabetes places a major factor, not just in your immune system, but also your response to the medications we give with COVID,” he explained.Medications like Dexamethasone can cause patients’ blood sugar to rise. For a diabetic patient, this medication can have bad side effects or even be taken off the table as a form of treatment due to the risks.Reina Gonzalez spent an entire month over the summer on a ventilator. She is a breast cancer survivor, and now, a survivor of this deadly virus. On Tuesday, she was celebrating her granddaughter’s first birth. Months after her initial diagnosis and release from the hospital, she is still unable to work due to her physical condition.“When I start moving or walking or any minimum exercise, my pulse races up a lot and my heart,” described Gonzalez.She feels fortunate to be able to apply for workers' compensation to help pay for her medical bills, but most of Dr. Bautista’s patients aren’t as fortunate.Dr. Bautista says the average cost of a test in the Central Valley is between 0 to 0. In an effort to increase testing, Dr. Bautista is now offering free, rapid testing at his practice. He and his staff are available every weekday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., an optimal time for working families. The testing is free and turns out results in 30 minutes or less.Fast test results are critical in this underserved community. It slows down the spread of the disease because people are not returning to work as they wait for test results.“They are not willing to miss work,” said Dr. Bautista, regarding the financial need of his patients.During this time, Dr. Bautista says he has learned medicine isn’t the only thing he needs in order to help his patients. He now finds himself educating them on social services available to them.During the rapids test sessions, programs offering financial aid to those who test positive are offered. The next issue to tackle when it comes to the impact of the virus is the long-term health complications many are left with.“We are starting to learn now that this, although it may have a low death rate the disability it brings, is definitely significant,” he said.With a high survival rate, many will need long-term care, leaving a community that has been disproportionately attacked by this virus with possibly decades of chronic health care issues. 3866

The coronavirus pandemic is now starting to cause sporting events in 2021 to become canceled.On Thursday, the NHL announced that it has canceled the 2021 Winter Classic and NHL All-Star Game.The Winter Classic has become the NHL’s signature outdoor event for the last decade, generally played outdoors on New Year’s Day. The game was originally slated to be played between Minnesota and St. Louis in Target Field.The NHL All-Star Game, originally scheduled for Jan. 31, 2020, has been canceled. The NHL planned on playing the game in Sunrise, Florida, home of the Florida Panthers.The NHL said it intends on playing a Winter Classic in Minnesota and an NHL All-Star Game in Florida in the near future.“Fan participation, both in arenas and stadiums as well as in the ancillary venues and events that we stage around the Winter Classic and All-Star Weekend, is integral to the success of our signature events,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Content Officer Steve Mayer. “Because of the uncertainty as to when we will be able to welcome our fans back to our games, we felt that the prudent decision at this time was to postpone these celebrations until 2022 when our fans should be able to enjoy and celebrate these tentpole events in-person, as they were always intended. The family of Jacob Blake is hosting a gathering in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday ahead of President Donald Trump's visit to the city.The event, which will be held near the site where Blake was shot seven times in the back by a Kenosha police officer, will include a press conference with local officials and family representatives. The event will also include a community clean-up, a food drive, a healing circle, and a voter registration booth.Several days after police officers shot Blake during an Aug. 23 altercation, protests in Kenosha grew violent. The city estimates that million in property damages have been caused by looting and burning amid the unrest.Last Tuesday, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse shot three protesters, two of them fatally, after he drove 20 miles to protect local businesses. Rittenhouse has been arrested in connection with the homicides; his lawyer says that Rittenhouse was shooting in self-defense.In recent days, protests in Kenosha have been peaceful and without incident.The event held by Blake's family comes hours before a visit to the city by President Donald Trump. Several Democratic politicians, including Kenosha's mayor and Wisconsin's governor, have asked Trump to reconsider, saying his presence could stoke more violence in the city.Blake was shot during an altercation with police on Aug. 23. Police say they were responding to a call about a man at a party who "shouldn't have been there."Police attempted to take Blake into custody but say he was non-compliant. At one point during the altercation, as Blake approached his car, Officer Rusten Sheskey shot Blake in the back at least seven times. The Cumberland, Wisconsin High School Class of 2018 got a special shout out from the local police department on an epic senior prank.The police department said on Facebook it was "one of the best senior pranks that Cumberland High School has seen."Students positioned an old junker strewn with loose bricks in front of what appeared to be a gaping black hole in the building's side, just outside the principal's office.It wasn't actually a hole, though. Using tape and a black tarp, the students created the illusion of damage, making it look like the car crashed into the side of the building. The back of the car said, "CHS Class of 2018."The best part? This prank included absolutely no damage at all to school property, which is why police singled it out."Hats off to the Cumberland High School Class of 2018 on your senior prank...Congratulations to all the seniors who are graduating," police said.This isn't the first time the tiny town of Cumberland has been in the viral spotlight.
