SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reported new signs Friday of the potentially dangerous disease tularemia on a trail in Sorrento Valley.Several batches of ticks trapped along Lopez Canyon Trail tested positive for the disease, also known as rabbit fever. The first group of ticks with the disease appeared last week, officials said.County officials posted warning signs for hikers. Vector Control will also expand tick trapping in the area. The best way for people to protect themselves from tick bites include insect repellent for humans and pets, and long-sleeved shirts and pants.Tularemia can be treated with antibiotics but it can be fatal. 679

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican whose term ends next month, revealed he is considering running for governor in an interview Thursday with the Los Angeles Times. The race will be tough for any Republican, according to political analyst John Dadian, because registered Democrats far outnumber Republicans in California. Those registered with no party preference also outnumber Republicans. “The uphill is he’d have to pull in all the people that are neither democrat or republican, but it’s certainly possible," Dadian said.According to Dadian, many political pundits consider Faulconer to be the most viable Republican in a general election, citing his record as a moderate mayor who frequently cross the aisle to work with Democrats on issues such as climate change. Faulconer's PAC raised more than 0,000 in the first half of the year, with the biggest donations coming from outside San Diego, which Dadian says is another indication of Faulconer's viability.Dadian says he expects Faulconer to spend much of his time traveling the state once he leaves office to build his profile and introduce himself to voters away from his home base. "What he’ll do now is get all around the state, let everybody know who he is. Then, when it’s an actual campaign, he’ll be raising money and he’ll be making very sharp hits on the current incumbent,” says Dadian.Faulconer has not revealed when he plans to make a decision about whether to officially run. 1486

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Convention Center opened its doors Wednesday as a temporary shelter for homeless individuals during the coronavirus pandemic.Starting with groups from San Diego's bridge shelters, the center will house homeless individuals to help protect them from the coronavirus and continue providing them shelter. The plan is to move in 400 people Wednesday. Eventually, the convention center will house 1,500 people.RELATED: San Diego converts Golden Hall into homeless shelter, prepares for 'storm' of COVID-19The effort helps the city enforce the CDC's social distancing policy, giving individuals more room to remain six feet apart amid the global outbreak. The move also helps centralize limited shelter staff."This convention center space will help us spread out our shelter beds, be more efficient with staffing, and protect parts of the population that are most susceptible to the coronavirus," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Wednesday. The center will offer the same services as bridge shelters, including security, food, showers, restrooms, laundry services, ADA accessibility, WiFi access, and health screenings.RELATED: As coronavirus concerns swirl, task force looks out for San Diego's homelessThe convention center is also being used as a pathway to housing services as well, Faulconer said. The convention center is only the first action as part of a larger plan to support a broader approach to addressing homelessness around the city during the pandemic, according to the city. Golden Hall has already welcomed nearly 100 people from bridge shelters. "For countless San Diegans, this has been the site of naturalization ceremonies, allowing them to start their new lives,'' Faulconer said last month. "Now it will be a place where homeless San Diegans can receive services that might save their lives.''Families that were already staying at Golden Hall have been moved to motel rooms for the duration of the shelter. The county's nine bridge homeless shelters with public nurses will convert to screening and triage centers during the pandemic. 2080

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry is calling for an audit of a city-leased building repeatedly shuttered over asbestos. The building at 101 Ash Street was closed Saturday and city employees were relocated for "the next few weeks" over asbestos violations, Bry said in a memo. Bry added that she received an update on June 17, 2019 that the project at the location remained "on schedule and within budget" after she requested an update 10 days prior."It is apparent that 101 Ash Street is neither on-time nor on-budget. It is increasingly more apparent that it never will be," Bry wrote.RELATED:Portion of San Diego City Hall evacuated after construction crews possibly disturb asbestosCity of San Diego workers sue over asbestos contaminationThe city entered a 20-year lease-to-own agreement for the building on Oct. 17, 2016. At the time of the agreement, city officials wanted to renovate the first two and top three floors, estimated to cost about million, before moving city employees into the building, a city memo said. Officials later said they wanted to renovate all 19 floors, estimating that cost to come at about million for each floor. The costs put the project on hold, leaving the building vacant, City News Service reported.Construction was also stopped over asbestos violations in August 2019.Bry is now asking the city to answer a slew of inquiries over the city's process used to inspect and purchase the building, total costs to-date associated with employee relocations, unforeseen budget increases, subcontractor performance, and the financial impact on the city's Development Services Department."It continues to be frustrating to hear about issues with 101 Ash Street," Bry wrote.Prior to the city leasing the building, the location was occupied by San Diego Gas & Electric from 1968 through 1998, and by Sempra Energy from 1998 through 2015. 1921
