SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly one week after Election Day and with state Assemblyman Todd Gloria holding a comfortable lead, City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry conceded in the race for San Diego mayor.As of Nov. 9 vote totals, Gloria was leading Bry 56% to 46%.During a virtual press conference on Monday, Bry said she called Gloria the day before and offered her congratulations. Regarding the campaign, Bry said she felt voters were misled by the media and political ads from the opposition.Bry said, "I want to congratulate Todd Gloria as the next mayor of San Diego. He and I spoke by phone yesterday, and I offered him my congratulations. But for the next few years, our city faces many challenges because of COVID-19, and Mr. Gloria will have a tough job. Thousands of San Diegans are unemployed through no fault of their own and city revenues are declining."She added, "I wish those issues could have been more central to the mayoral campaign. We certainly tried to make them the focus of our communications. Unfortunately, interest groups supporting my opponent took a different approach.Perhaps inspired by the ‘fake news’ rhetoric coming out of Washington, they spent over million on TV commercials and mailers cynically designed to fool voters into thinking they were sponsored by our campaign. In times past, dishonest advertising of that sort would have been called out by responsible journalists, and voters would have been made aware of these cynical tactics. But the media -- like many citizens -- has become so desensitized to such tactics that they no longer pique their interest. And, unfortunately, these dishonest attacks clearly impacted our campaign."When asked if she would run for mayor again, Bry said she may not seek public office again. She added she plans to take time off with her family before her next endeavor.Bry, 71, will remain on the San Diego City Council until Dec. 10. She has served as the District 1 council representative since 2016.Gloria issued the following statement in response to Bry's concession:“I want to thank Councilmember Bry for her service to our City and I wish her and her family well. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials are seeking the public's help to identify a young woman who was hit and killed on Interstate 5 near the San Clemente Border Patrol station almost two weeks ago.The Hispanic female, believed to be in her late teens to early 20s, was hit while trying to run across northbound I-5 lanes at about 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 9.She may have recently traveled to the country from Mexico or another Central American country, according to Medical Examiner investigator Tessa Lee.RELATED: Unaccompanied girl hit, killed walking on Interstate 5 near San Clemente border station"We are hoping that someone may recognize this young woman so we can identify her and notify her family," Lee said.A fingerprint search in the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol databases came back with no matches.The woman had brown eyes, long hair, weighed about 111 pounds, and was 5-feet 1-inches tall. She didn't have any identification at the time of her death.She was, however, wearing distinctive clothing: A maroon shirt with repeating cartoon prints and the word "travels" on it, jeans with a stitched design on a brand tag reading "Eemociones," and gray high-top sneakers with a heart on the sides and turquoise metallic studding.Officials have released a sketch of the woman as she would've appeared while alive.Anyone who may have any information about the woman's identity is asked to call the Medical Examiner's Office at 858-694-2905 and mention case number 2018-01951. 1496

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Near Crystal Pier, an unusual sight greeted residents and beach visitors in North Pacific Beach: a multi-million dollar home spray-painted with graffiti. Feet from Palisades Park is an impressive home, perched on a bluff and boasting a pristine view. That home is now adorned with something not so pristine."Not good. It's an eyesore for the area. Spoils the whole look for the area," said Nick Tulip, a tourist from England.Neighbors say the large tagging appeared on the home over the weekend. "This kind of stuff I've never seen before, so I hope it won't be trending," said Elise Bernier, who lives in the area.Just to the south, along other parts of the shore, the sight of graffiti is more common, especially as school lets out for the summer. Neighbors in North Pacific beach are concerned that could be headed in their direction."It's an early sign of what's to come," said Ron Calkins, a retired firefighter who has seen tagging escalate in other areas."Other people are going to cross it off and put their own tags up. It turns into a stupid turf war between people that don't even live here ... just going to get worse unless there is more enforcement," said Calkins.The possibility that there is more to come is an uneasy feeling in an area known for tranquility."Totally disrupts the beauty of what's going on," said Bernier. 1365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday the North San Diego Business Chamber honored first responders who've gone above and beyond in their duties protecting the community. One of the recipients was San Diego Police Department K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese, honored for his actions during the active shooter incident at the Chabad of Poway synagogue.Wiese was on his way to meet his family for lunch when he heard the shots fired call and immediately responded to the area.Despite having little information and no back-up, Officer Wiese was able to track the suspect down who then surrendered. "Active shooter is right up there with 'officer down'; the calls don't get more intense than that, when you know someone is actively shooting there's going to be multiple victims, there's going to be a large scene, it's going to be chaotic," said Wiese. Officer Wiese says his 20 years of training kicked in."I tried not to think about the danger, just tried to figure out what I needed to do," said Wiese. "Every single day we have great stories like this, and so I want the public to know this is not unusual, this is our normal," said Chief Craig Carter with the Escondido Police Department. Several other first responders were honored, including Rancho Santa Fe firefighters and Oceanside Police detectives. 1299

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Wednesday, the San Diego Police Department issued a press release in which the Chief reaffirmed his commitment to unbiased policing, months before the anticipated release of a new report about officers stopping people in the field. It comes amid community concern over a different report that suggests that minorities are stopped at higher rates.Over FaceTime on Wednesday, 10News spoke with Chris Burbank, a retired police chief from Utah who is now working with the Center for Policing Equity. It’s a nonprofit that looks at data surrounding police interactions with the community. “We try and reduce the disparity that exists in law enforcement today, throughout the country,” he adds.In September, his team partnered with SDPD to start analyzing the department’s stop data for a new report that should be released in about six months. Wednesday’s press release states in part, “Police Chief David Nisleit [reaffirms] his commitment to reviewing internal operations and making any necessary changes based on the report's findings."Last week, a separate ACLU-commissioned report was released that caused some community concern. According to the ACLU, records from SDPD and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department show a pattern of discriminatory policing against black people and people with disabilities. SDPD has not issued a formal comment on the ACLU-commissioned report. Last week, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department sent 10News the following statement. “The San Diego Sheriff's Department is committed to providing the highest level of public safety in all the neighborhoods we serve. We expect all of our stops, detentions, arrests, and searches to be constitutional and within Sheriff's policy. We regularly meet with community groups which allow us to address concerns and continue to build trust with the citizens of San Diego County. We have just been made aware of a report evaluating policing in San Diego. It would be premature to speak about the findings prior to reading and evaluating the methodology used to reach the conclusions presented in the report. However, at a glance some of the statistics in the report do not correlate with our numbers. For example, the report seems to overstate the rate at which Blacks and Hispanics are stopped within Sheriff's jurisdictions. The numbers in the ACLU report do not appear to be consistent with our data. Once we have had ample time to review the report, we will provide a more comprehensive response.”10News reached out to the Sheriff’s Department again on Wednesday for any new comment.
