SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego financial expert in San Diego has a message for women looking for success: a man is not a financial plan.Most women would rather talk with the grandmothers about their love lives than talk about financial planning, according to an investment survey done by Oppenheimer Funds.CPA Ginita Wall has a clear message.“Every marriage ends in either divorce or widowhood and 70 percent of the time it’s the woman who’s left alone,” said Wall. “Then thinking that magically, someday, I’ll start saving for retirement, someday I’ll be able to buy a house; living in the someday and not really planning for it today.”Wall moved her CPA practice to San Diego 31 years ago. She realized there was a need.“Women were out in the marketplace, but they weren't managing the money, and sadly, often nobody was.”Wall and financial planner Candace Bahr launched the Women’s Institute for Financial Education (WIFE), a nonprofit to give women the tools to start making a difference.“We didn't have anything to sell anybody. Our whole goal was and continues to be ‘our goal is education,’” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr established Second Saturday, a monthly workshop to teach women what they need to know during divorce. Each session brings in an attorney for matters of the court. Wall gives financial advice, a counselor helps with family issues, and a mediator can settle the differences. The experts volunteer their time.“It’s a decision for many people that may be the largest financial decision of their life, and if you're going through it uninformed or too emotional, it's going to be difficult to make the right choices.”Wall says love and money go together, but so do arguments.“if you loved me more, you wouldn't be spending this money, spending more on me, or you would understand how I feel.” Wall advises couples to talk about what’s important to them, make goals, create a concrete plan and monitor it.“So we want women to be partners in a relationship, not dependents,” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr’s money message has gone national. Second Saturday is now in 115 other locations around the country, and there are plans to be in 500 cities soon.“It's amazing because we didn't set out to do this for 31 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local woman says a water meter device in the Midway District has been leaking gallons of water for at least two years, but no one will fix it. She emailed Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner after contacting multiple government agencies to report the wasted water. The backflow device sits just off of Sports Arena Boulevard. When 10News visited it last week, it was dripping steady streams of water.“It’s a problem,” says Diane Ang, who works nearby. She says there's so much leaking water, that the surrounding transient population uses the water to fills up their bottles. Containers of shampoo and soap wrappers are scattered around. Ang tells 10News that people bathe in the water. At one point, she says, people grew a garden next to the device because the ground was so saturated with water. “[They had] tomatoes and some other vegetables,” she adds.There's no property tag on the device, so Ang called the City of San Diego at least three times but couldn’t get any help. She filled out multiple requests for assistance on the City’s "Get it Done” website, but there was no resolution. She was told the backflow device might belong to the Navy. She tells us that she made several attempts to get in touch with someone at the Navy. She says she spent at least two or three years trying to get the issue fixed. “No one cares. No one cares,” she adds.10News wanted to know how much water was leaking, so we timed one of the flowing streams using a measuring bucket. What we discovered was that thousands of gallons of water may have been wasted in the last few years. We took our information to Mathnasium of Point Loma. The math tutoring company found that 21,000 gallons would have be lost in one year alone, assuming the water had been leaking at the same rate, continuously. “It’s such a huge waste,” says Ang. 10News contacted the City of San Diego. A spokesperson directed us to the Navy. A weeks ago, we reached out Naval Base Point Loma. This Tuesday, a media spokesperson for Naval Base Point Loma sent us an email which reads, “We appreciate everyone who took the time to bring this leak to our attention. Our Naval Base Point Loma Public Works team is taking action to fix the leak today. Conserving our natural resources is a high priority and is very important to all of us at Naval Base Point Loma. We encourage active participation by contacting us directly at nbpl_pao@navy.mil or use the “Get-It-Done San Diego” app for the City of San Diego. [It] is a quick way for anyone in the community to report service issues (street lights, traffic signals, trash recycling, sidewalks, street flooding, etc.)” 10News verified that the leak has been addressed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was rescued from the top of a section of the border wall in Otay Mesa Tuesday.Cal Fire firefighters were called to a section of barrier in Otay Mesa just before 6 a.m. Crews arrived to find one person stuck on top of the border wall structure.Crews used a 35-foot ladder to reach the man and assist him down. No injuries were reported.Tuesday's rescue comes more than a month after San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighters and Border Patrol agents helped rescue three people stuck on top of a portion of the border wall in Otay Mesa. 560

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake along Mexico’s southern coastline Tuesday was felt hundreds of miles away.Thousands of people ran into the streets as buildings swayed back and forth. A hospital in Mexico City was evacuated; patients were sent to wait outside until they were given the all-clear.According to Mexico’s civil protection agency, four people were confirmed dead.The earthquake was centered just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. According to Mexican officials, the damage was not widespread.“Right now, we’re working together with the Mexican Army, the Mexican Marines, and the National Guard,” said Ricardo Gamez, personal secretary to the mayor of Huatulco.“The Mayor, Giovanne González García, has visited hospitals, checking buildings, homes,” he said. “We have a lot of damage. We are doing evaluations of the houses and the buildings.”Gamez said shelters were set up for anyone in need.In San Diego County, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina was left with concerns as he has close ties to the coastal town.“There’s a strong Oaxacan community in southern California, especially San Diego,” said Dedina. “Most hardcore surfers in San Diego know that coast really well.”Outside of his duties as mayor, Dedina runs Wildcoast, an international team that conserves coastal marine ecosystems and wildlife, including sea turtles in Mexico.“We have an office in Huatulco, our office received some damage I talked to our staff member there who was shaken up and in the office when the earthquake happened,” he said. “Talked to our interns, we have two paid interns that come from an indigenous community where they work to protect sea turtles; they were on the road near the epicenter when it happened.”Dedina said all three people were not injured.“It’s really a remarkable place in Mexico and probably some of the warmest, friendliest people on the planet,” he said. “Very shocked when we heard this happened and wishing our best to all our friends in Oaxaca.” 2024

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local non-profit organization named "Promises2Kids" is helping children who are in San Diego's foster care system receive some of the structure and support that may be lacking due to the challenges of their home life."Having extra support and some stability is something I'm really grateful for because there's been so many times in my life when that's been absent," said Tiffani Hamilton, who has participated in the program for several years.Promises2Kids provides economic, educational, and emotional assistance, from purchasing school supplies and other items, to tutoring, to helping teenage children prepare and go through the college application process. They also provide mentors, who often form lifelong relationships with the students they guide.Hamilton's story is not unusual. She and her five siblings were raised by a single mother, who struggled with addiction and abusive relationships until her death. Hamilton was separated from her siblings when she entered the foster care system, bouncing from home to home. She credits Promises2Kids for helping give her the assistance and support she needed to achieve her goal of going to college."It's given me an experience that I never thought I would have. It's definitely shaped me into who I'm becoming.
