ISLAMABAD, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese embassy official Tuesday called on an official of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to donate 30,000 U.S. dollars on behalf of the China Red Cross Society (CRCS) to assist the residents affected by the landslide in northern Pakistan early this year.Muhammad Ilyas Khan, PRCS secretary general, asked Yao Jing, counselor of the Chinese embassy to Pakistan, to convey his appreciation to the CRCS for its generous donation to Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan due to the landslide in January, 2010.He said that Chinese friends always extend assistance to Pakistan in difficult times and Pakistan is proud of its friendship with China.At present, the local government and PRCS are working hard to provide relief to the villages. The government is also trying to control the damage and tackle with the challenge caused by the lake in the area.On January 4, a serious landslide occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan and formed a huge barrier lake. The slide blocked over 20,000 local residents in Upper Hunza from outside. The Pakistani government is conducting the rescue and relief work . BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua) -- China called off its grade II drought emergency response on Tuesday as the severe drought in its southwestern regions eased after recent rain.The drought, one of the worst in decades, eased in most parts of the Chongqing Municipality, provinces of Sichuan and Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement on its website.But in Yunnan Province, the drought was still severe in most parts as the province had only received limited and scattered rainfalls, it said.Southwestern China had six falls of rain between March 22 and April 26, which ranged in volume from 50 to 100 millimeters, figures from the China Meteorological Administration showed.As of Tuesday, up to 123 million mu (about 8.3 million hectares) of arable land in China was affected by the drought, with 17.91 million people and 12.43 million farm animals still short of water, said the statement.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged reconstruction authorities to protect the fragile ecosystem and improve living conditions during their work in the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.Hui was speaking at a meeting held by the State Council on Friday in Beijing to evaluate a report on the reconstruction's impact on resources and the environment.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Yushu in the Himalayan northwest Qinghai Province on April 14, leaving at least 2,200 deaths.The State Council, or Cabinet, approved the report at the meeting and Hui said reconstruction planners should consider the impact of their projects on the ecosystem.The epicenter of the devastating quake was at the headwaters of three major rivers -- the Yangtze, the Yellow and the Lancang rivers -- that run through China and neighboring countries.The clearing of debris, selection of sites for new towns and development of other industries in the quake area should all prioritize environmental protection, and natural forests as well as vegetative cover should be protected and restored, Hui said.The government has pledged to finish reconstruction work within three years.
