A Middle Tennessee woman visiting Gatlinburg with her family got quite a surprise when she found a bear outside their hotel.  Kim Vastola, of Watertown was in Gatlinburg for her son’s baseball tournament and was staying on the first floor of a Quality Inn.Vastola was startled when she heard people yelling about a bear. She went outside and captured video of the bear on a tree behind the hotel before he made his way around the building.  Vastola said the person at the front desk told her the "town bear" – named Robert – was lurking around but there was no need to be alarmed.Apparently, “Robert” lives in the area and roams when he comes out of hibernation. A Southwest Airlines plane flying from Fort Lauderdale to BWI was hit by a pickup truck after landing at the airport.  It happened early Monday morning.   Passengers said the white truck crashed into the side of the plane on the runway.  An ambulance was at the scene, but according to passengers, no one was injured.  Passengers were not allowed to leave while crews continued their investigation.  Southwest Airlines has not released any comment but the company did respond to a tweet from one of the passengers on the plane.  A passenger named Michael Simon posted this tweet: "So our southwest flight just got into an accident with a pickup truck. Guess that makes me an airplane crash survivor."  874

A puggle is a baby echidna, an Australian relative of the platypus. They are sometimes called a spiny anteater.Echidna’s are one of only five species of mammals who lay eggs. Sydney started in a grape-sized, leathery egg that was carried in her mom’s pouch for ten days. Once hatched, a jelly bean-sized Sydney stayed in mom’s pouch nursing milk for awhile, before climbing out and staying close to the den.Those hollow spines start poking through at roughly 53 days old. The spines are a camouflage in the wild. Echidnas are found natively throughout New Guinea, Australia and Tasmania, in a wide range of habitats from snow-covered mountains to deserts. 797

A new poll found many parents have no plans to get their children the flu shot this year.According to a new report published by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 34 percent of U.S. parents say their children are unlikely getting the vaccine this flu season.Dr. Judith Shlay with Denver Public Health says it can be extremely dangerous to opt out of getting the shot. "They can be hospitalized and die from it as we saw last year, and we assume this year will be just as bad as last year," Dr. Shlay says.Of the 1,977 parents polled, the report found 48 percent of the participants said they usually follow the recommendations of their child’s healthcare provider when making decisions about the flu shot. But 21 percent say they don’t remember if their doctor recommended the vaccine.Many adults The NOW spoke with say they don’t remember flu shots being recommended by doctors when they were younger. Dr. Shlay says before the year 2000, they weren't."Before that time period, we were only asking high-risk adults, elderly and at-risk children to get vaccinated," Dr. Shlay explains.Parents says they have their own reasons as to why they don't get their kids flu shots. Some of those reasons include potential side effects, the belief the shot doesn’t work and that their child is healthy and doesn’t need to be vaccinated."You might still get the flu, but by taking the vaccine, you will reduce the disease burden from taking it. A Southwest Airlines flight with 117 people aboard slid off a runway on Thursday at California's Hollywood Burbank Airport during heavy rain, the Federal Aviation Administration said.There were no injuries reported, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.Flight 278, a Boeing 737-700 that originated in Oakland, California, came to a stop after running through an area of crushable material designed to bring an airplane to a halt, he said.The airport is open, and all airlines are operational, the airport tweeted. One runway has been closed.There were 112 passengers and five crew members on the flight, Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King said. Southwest tweeted the airline will refund the passengers ticket costs and will make an "additional gesture of goodwill."Around the time of the incident, visibility at the airport dropped to 1 mile.
