DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Polo spectators will enjoy a new venue this month as the San Diego Polo Classic moves to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The event, previously held on the beach at the Hotel Del Coronado, will take space Sept. 28 at the Del Mar Arena. Two games will take place, including one pitting the Porsche San Diego team against an all-Hawaiian Tommy Bahamas team. During a polo match, players on horseback try to hit as many goals as possible. DEL MAR, Calif., (KGTV)— “Enter at your own risk”— That’s what the signs at Del Mar Beach say after at least three shark sightings in as many days. There was also one sighting off the Coronado Coast around noon Wednesday.Del Mar is precisely the escape Kathleen Pierce and her family were after. “We have been suffering in the hundred-degree weather in Temecula so we thought we’d come down to the beach,” Pierce said. It was a great plan until she saw the warning sign at the beach entrance. ADVISORY: SHARK SIGHTED. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.“I saw the sign, and I had to pause,” Pierce said. But they jumped into the water anyway, because she figured, the likelihood of actually coming up onto a shark was low. But a few minutes in, her son spotted a few. “When the wave was about to crash, I just saw all of them swimming in a group,” her son Drew said. Drew said they were only about three to four feet long, so he ignored them. His friend was frightened and ran to the shore. “The sharks that were seen off of Del Mar, based on the size, we know that they were juveniles,” Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, Heidi Dewar said. Dewar said if the sharks are under six feet, they are juveniles. They eat smaller fish, so they pose no threat to people. It is their parents we need to worry about. “If I saw a sub-adult or anything over 6 feet, I would probably personally get out of the water,” Dewar laughed. DENVER -- An Aurora Theater Shooting survivor, who made the difficult decision to amputate his leg after years of excruciating pain, is now taking his first steps toward recovery.Joshua Nowlan was shot in the arm and the leg in the 2012 movie theater shooting, and recovery has been hell. "Last night, I couldn't sleep whatsoever," Nowlan said, walking into Creative Technology Prosthetic's Denver office. "I was so excited that today finally has come that I can put my prosthetic on for the first time."After doctors amputated his leg in January, he had major complications, including kidney failure, a serious fall and a hematoma that required another emergency surgery."I am still completely 100 percent on the side that I am happy, that I did the amputation surgery," Nowlan said, rubbing the stump that is still swollen and healing.As he took his first steps on his prosthetic, he began to cry."It feels so weird, but it feels so right, too, at the same time," he said.Zach Harvey made the prosthetic and said that eventually, Nowlan will walk without any assistance and with a different prosthetic."Right now, we want something a little softer, but as he starts to tolerate pressure, walk faster, and wants to do more activities, then we'll provide him with something a little springier," Harvey said.Nowlan said it's another piece in the puzzle he is trying to put back together."Even though it happened five years ago, he took something from me that will never be put back together," Nowlan said. "And here I am trying to makeshift those puzzle pieces and put them back in."  1656

(KGTV) — While concerts are on hiatus during the pandemic, the Del Mar Fairgrounds will host several "concerts in your car" this fall.Acts including Dirty Heads, DJ Snoopadelic (aka Snoop Dogg), Slightly Stoopid, The Beach Boys, and more will take the stage at Del Mar between Sept. 25 and Nov. 1.
