A new boarding process is coming to Delta Air Lines.Beginning on January 23, 2019, the airline will ditch zone boarding in favor of a new — and more complex — process based on ticket type and color.Despite the expansion in number of groups from six to eight, Delta said the new format hopes to "encourage fewer customers to line up in the gate area" and ultimately speed up boarding.The Atlanta-based carrier will still begin boarding with passengers that need extra time, followed by premium passengers sitting in its Delta One suites (applicable on select domestic and all international flights) and then its new Premium Select cabin on some international flights or First Class on domestic flights.After that, it gets complicated: The airline used to board the Sky Priority zone — passengers sitting in Comfort+ and Gold and Platinum Medallion members — together.Moving forward, that group will split into two, with Comfort+ passengers boarding first followed by Sky Priority, meaning high-spending members of its frequent flier program will have to wait a little bit longer.Following that, Delta will board economy passengers by announcing Main Cabin 1 though 3, instead of Zone 1 though 4.Fliers that purchase Delta's cheapest tickets will board last in a new group: Zone 4 will now be called Basic Economy. Delta credit card holders and Silver Medallion members will board with Main Cabin 1.Each section will have different colors displayed when they purchase their ticket on Delta's website and on airport screens to help."This latest enhancement further refines how Delta's process works and is designed to better link the Delta product they purchased to differentiated experiences throughout their journey," said Tim Mapes, Delta's chief marketing officer, in a statement.Delta (DAL) joins United (UAL) and American (AAL), which both recently revamped their boarding processes. A non-profit in California has developed a way to capture poachers who snatch sea turtle eggs - building lookalike eggs with GPS trackers constructed inside them.According to research published Monday in the journal Current Biology, the InvestEGGator is a 3D-printed life-like turtle egg that can be tracked as far away as 137 kilometers (85 miles)."It replicates the appearance, weight, and feel of a real turtle egg. It is easily deployed at low risk to investigators, can be programmed and monitored remotely using web-based and smartphone applications, and is a low cost, allowing for deployment of many units at once," the company said on its website.The decoy eggs are placed in real nests alongside real eggs, which are monitored and mapped every time they are moved, said the Ventura-based Paso Pacífico, the non-profit that developed the eggs.The research showed that the decoy eggs provide a signal once every hour."Using data provided by the decoys, we identified trafficking routes and on two occasions properties of potential interest to law enforcement," researchers said in the journal. "Decoys also yielded anecdotal information, furthering our understanding of trafficking routes." 1206

A new warning Tuesday cautions toxic chemicals were discovered in several popular back-to-school items. Everything from crayons and markers, to binders and water bottles.The U.S. Public Interest Research (USPIRG) groups tested 27 school supplies and found that some of them contained toxic chemicals like asbestos, lead, benzine and phthalates, which have been linked to cancer and other health hazards.“You can't assume that things are automatically safe when they're on our store shelves,” says Danny Katz, with USPIRG.Katz's team found Playskool crayon from Dollar Tree had trace amounts of asbestos. But that wasn't it.A blue jot band binder from Dollar Tree tested positive for phthalates.  Additionally, dry erase markers from Amazon tested positive for benzine, even though the packaging says nontoxic.“Just because a product says nontoxic like that, doesn't mean it's been tested for all the different chemicals,” Katz explains.Katz says what you should look for is a symbol, which confirms the product has been tested and approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.His team has put together a list for parents and teachers of products that tested positive for toxic chemicals and those that didn't.“There's just no reason that these chemicals need to be in the school supplies,” Katz says. “There's plenty of school supplies that don't have them. So we're shining a spotlight on which ones have these toxic chemicals which ones we didn't find in helping teachers and parents to stay safe.”  1535

A new political ad could be masquerading as an official correction to the sample ballots that hit mailboxes across San Diego.It's the latest swing in the fight over the state's recent 12-cent per gallon gas tax hike.The mailer, sent to two million Californians mail-in voters, is titled "Election Ballot **Correction**" and says the correct title for Proposition 6 should be "Gas Tax Repeal Initiative.”Proposition 6 is on the November ballot to repeal the state's gas tax increase and new vehicle registration fees. The state raised the levies last year to generate billions of dollars in infrastructure projects. Dave McCulloch, communications director for Reform California, which sent out the mailer, says the Attorney General's ballot language does not make that clear. It instead reads that Prop 6 "eliminates certain road repair and transportation funding...repeals a 2017 transportation law's taxes and fees designated for road repairs and public transportation."We sent out this mailer to make sure that everyone in California knows Prop 6 is the gas tax repeal," McCulloch said. "We know that when people discover that Yes on 6 means to repeal the gas tax, they're much more in favor of it because they realize what it is.”The Attorney General's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The mailer instructs voters to keep it with their sample ballot mailed to them. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said ballot language is often contentions. But he noted the gas tax increase has been so heavily covered that most people will associate with Prop 6. He says this mailer reinforces that. "When they get to their ballot on election day, they're not going to see repeal the gas tax," Kousser said. "They're going to see a proposal written legal language that says exactly what this bill does, which is it changes transportation fees and cuts funding for things." That mailer does include disclosures that it's not official and that Reform California paid for it. A portion of Interstate 95, one of the main shipping thoroughfare on the east coast, was shut down for hours on on Friday after two tractor trailers overturned on a Maryland bridge.The accident occurred on the Tydings Memorial Bridge, which spans the Susquehanna River in northwest Maryland in between Baltimore and Philadelphia.In addition to the closure of the bridge the Maryland Transportation Authority also put a hold on all traffic because of Friday's high winds.MDTA also temporarily closed the Hatem Bridge — which carries traffic on US 40 and runs parallel to the Tydings — because of the wind. Northbound I-95 detoured at MD 155 (Ex89) and southbound I-95 traffic detoured at MD 222 (Ex93).
