SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An infectious disease expert for Scripps Health reminded San Diegans Tuesday to get influenza shots early this season to avoid potentially overloading the region's medical system during the COVID-19 pandemic."If you normally get the flu shot each year, then now is the time to make arrangements for your vaccination, and if you rarely or never get a shot, then this is the year to start doing it," said Dr. Siu Ming Geary, an internal medicine physician and vice president of primary care for Scripps Clinic Medical Group.Symptoms for typical seasonal influenza, such as fever, coughing, headache and fatigue, are similar to those for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, and both viruses attack the respiratory system. It remains unclear how the two viruses might interact or affect overall sickness when infecting the same person."We don't yet know how bad this year's flu season will be, but it is possible to get both the coronavirus and the flu at the same time," Geary said. "Both can result in severe illness and complications, including hospitalization and death. While there is not a readily available vaccine for coronavirus, we do know that being vaccinated for influenza is the best thing you can do to protect yourself from getting the flu."Last year, 105 people died from the flu in San Diego County, while the virus killed as many as 62,000 nationwide. The 2017-18 season was even worse, with 343 deaths in San Diego County and 79,000 nationwide."While some experts may disagree about the optimum timing to receive the flu shot, most, including those at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommend getting the shot by the end of October," Geary said. "As for this year, with the coronavirus pandemic still in full swing, it's not too early to get the flu shot right now."While flu vaccine supplies have sometimes run thin in the past, that shouldn't be the case this year, Geary said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An additional 10,000 households economically impacted by COVID-19 are able to apply for rent relief from San Diego County Tuesday, part of million county supervisors allocated for just such a purpose.County residents economically impacted by the pandemic could qualify for assistance of up to ,000 to pay for past-due or upcoming rent through the second wave of the Emergency Rental Assistance Program starting Tuesday.County leaders are anticipating awarding more than million in assistance to residents who applied during the first round of applications at the beginning of October, although details about when that money is expected are scarce.For the new round of funding, the county will review applications as they are received and will continue to take applications until funds are depleted. Those who apply will be able to check their application status online at any point in the process.To be eligible, households must be renting and have experienced a financial hardship directly related to COVID-19. This includes a loss or reduction of income or an increase in medical expenses.Households must also fall under 60% of the area median income to qualify. For example, to be eligible, a single-person household can earn up to ,540 and a four-person household can earn up to ,300. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Juvenile arrest rates in San Diego County are the lowest they've been in a decade, according to a report released Friday by the San Diego Association of Governments.City and county law enforcement officers made 13.9 juvenile arrests per 1,000 people in 2017, compared to 56.9 arrests per 1,000 people in 2008, more than four times more.However, San Diego County still has the second highest juvenile arrest rate among large counties in Southern California, with San Bernardino County's rate sitting at 16.7 arrests per 1,000 people.SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division prepared the report."The juvenile arrest rate comparison continues a 10-year decline," said SANDAG Division Director of Criminal Justice Cynthia Burke. "This trend also has been seen in other jurisdictions across the state and nation."Arrest rates for adults remained steady at 33.5 per 1,000 people from 2016 to 2017. Adult arrest rates have declined since 2008, though, when law enforcement officers arrested 42.8 adults per 1,000 people.Arrests for violent offenses ticked up for both adults, from 13,924 to 14,356, and juveniles, from 1,138 to 1,183. Property-related offenses fell for both demographics, with adult arrests dropping from 8,642 to 7,862 and juvenile arrests dropping from 1,027 to 829."This decline in property-related arrests for adults may be related in-part to Proposition 47 which was passed in 2014 and reduced several property and drug-related offenses from felonies to misdemeanors," Burke said.According to SANDAG, misdemeanor rates spiked in 2015 after the enactment of Proposition 47 while felony rates dropped.Since then, however, felony rates have stabilized at 8.6 per 1,000 for adults and 4 per 1,000 for juveniles while misdemeanor rates have dropped, especially among youth in San Diego County.Adults in their 20s had the highest arrest rate of any age demographic at 60.3 per 1,000 while residents 70 or older were arrested at a rate of 1.7 per 1,000, the lowest of any age range. Faulconer, along with other regional leaders, Monday urged the Board of Supervisors to approve as part of its budget .4 million to fund behavioral health at new permanent supportive housing projects.The group -- which also included San Diego City Councilman Chris Ward, chair of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless (RTFH), and San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) Executive Vice President Jeff Davis -- unveiled a strategy to provide intensive behavioral health and care coordination services on-site to support up to 400 new units at upcoming hotel housing projects.The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday to have a final discussion and vote on its .4 billion fiscal year 2020-21 budget.Starting in April, the city and county of San Diego teamed up with the RTFH and the housing commission to provide shelter and services to nearly 1,200 people experiencing homelessness with Operation Shelter to Home at the San Diego Convention Center. The county's Health and Human Services Agency has provided on-site behavioral health and care coordination services at the operation, expanding on the services provided at the city's bridge shelters.Now, the organizations are working to replicate and build on the same coordinated care model outside the shelter setting.According to the group, these types of services are critical to stabilizing individuals so that they can stay in permanent housing. In a survey conducted by the SDHC of clients at Operation Shelter to Home, nearly 70% of clients required permanent supportive housing level of services or higher for success."The county can tackle the debilitating cycle of homelessness by making behavioral health and care coordination services more readily available," Fletcher said. "Redirecting .4 million toward mental health and substance misuse treatment is a better way to use the funds, reduce the reliance on a broken crisis-care model, and ensure people's needs are being met. I urge my colleagues to join me on Tuesday in supporting this approach."Faulconer and Ward have been working with housing commission on transition plans for the individuals staying at the convention center. Earlier this month, the commission's board authorized SDHC to submit applications to the state for "Project Homekey" grant funds for two or more properties.Through the Homekey initiative, California has made 0 million in grant funds available statewide to purchase and rehabilitate hotels and convert them into interim or permanent housing."By converting hotels into hundreds of permanent homes, the city and county of San Diego have an opportunity to continue to lead the state in creating new solutions to reduce homelessness," Faulconer said. "It's critical that when we have keys in hand for these units, we also have the services in place to support them, and the county's vote Tuesday can ensure that happens."If the Board of Supervisors approves the .4 million, SDHC will be able to pair the services to clients placed at the new supportive housing units."(The) .4 million in behavioral health and care coordination services will give struggling San Diegans the security and peace of mind that a new home is a permanent home," Ward said. "I join Supervisor Fletcher in calling on his colleagues to approve this funding to keep homeless San Diegans safe and healthy from the threats of COVID-19."The majority of the .4 million will be used for two years of behavioral health services for the housing projects, the group said.
