Infectious disease experts say the threat of superbugs is growing. They're bacteria that have evolved so that existing medications no longer work to treat infections.“This is made worse by the overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics and it has become a crisis here in the United States and around the world,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Chief of Infectious Disease at Tufts Medical Center.Boucher says antibiotic-resistant bacteria can affect treatment for patients with skin infections or cause urinary tract infections in otherwise healthy women.Superbugs are also well-known for their presence in hospitals, causing serious problems, like pneumonia. That's a big issue amid the pandemic, because hospitalized COVID-19 patients may face getting a secondary infection, putting them at a greater risk of dying.Boucher says the emerging threat of superbugs has gotten to the point where physicians have had to tell some patients their infection can't be treated because there's no effective antibiotic. That could mean a denial for an organ transplant or chemotherapy.“And that is nothing that any of us in the infectious disease business ever, ever want to face,” said Boucher. “And we know that if don't continue to advocate and act and really change this problem, that could get worse.”Boucher is working with the Partnership to Fight Infectious Disease to advocate for change in Congress. She says people should make sure to take any prescribed antibiotics appropriately and talk to their doctor about how much is truly necessary. 1540

It has been nearly a decade since music superstar Michael Jackson died. The "King of Pop" died June 25, 2009 at his home in Los Angeles after receiving fatal doses of the drugs propofol and benzodiazepine. He was found unresponsive in his bedroom by his doctor, Conrad Murray.Murray had administered the drugs to Jackson and was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death. He spent two years in prison.Jackson, one of 10 siblings in the famous Jackson family from Gary, Indiana, was a global star; he was a best-selling music artist the year he died. He was influential in music and dance, and also the fashion world. To mark the anniversary of Jackson's death, ABC will air a two-hour television special that pays tribute to the legacy of the iconic singer. It took Baton Rouge Police Officer Blane Salamoni less than 90 seconds to shoot Alton Sterling, but police took nearly two years to fire him and release footage from his body camera.Salamoni's firing on Friday was the latest chapter in a tumultuous week for the Sterling family. State officials decided not to file criminal charges against the officers involved in the shooting, saying their actions were justified. Days later, police said the officers violated use-of-force policies.A second officer, Howie Lake II, was suspended for three days without pay for losing his temper during the incident. 608

It seems Americans are returning to air travel, despite another spike in coronavirus cases in the United States. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it screened more than 1 million passengers Sunday, the highest number of travelers screened at the agency's checkpoints since March 17, around the time the pandemic hit the U.S.The weekly volume of screenings was also the highest it’s been since the onslaught of the coronavirus, with about 6.1 million passengers screened nationwide last week. The number of fliers remains well below pre-pandemic levels, but TSA says the 1 million single-day passenger volume is a noteworthy development that follows significant TSA checkpoint modifications in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The agency says it has been deploying acrylic barriers and technologies that reduce or eliminate physical contact between passengers and TSA officers.New credential authentication devices are also being installed at various airport checkpoints, enabling passengers to insert their ID directly into a card reader, eliminating the need for a TSA screening officer to touch the ID.Additionally, many checkpoints now feature computed tomography (CT) scanners, allowing TSA officers to manipulate an image on screen to get a better view of a bag’s contents.“This technology often enables officers to clear items without having to open a carry-on bag,” TSA said. “The new CT scanner further reduces the need for a passenger to remove contents of their bag during the screening process.”TSA has established a “Stay Healthy. Stay Secure.” campaign that it says is designed to prepare travelers for the new procedures they can expect at checkpointsClick here to learn more about how TSA is addressing the coronavirus. As of Monday morning, more than 219,600 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. and over 8 million have contracted the coronavirus across the nation, according to an ongoing tally by Johns Hopkins University. 1972

It’s official, summer 2020 was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their monthly report on global temperatures. August 2020’s temperatures around the world made it the second-warmest August on record behind 2016, and the third-hottest season. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, August set a new record with a temperature departure from average of 2.14 degrees F, beating 2016’s numbers.“The most notable temperature departures from average were observed across Alaska, eastern Canada, the western contiguous U.S., Europe, northern Russia, central South America, Western Australia, eastern Antarctica, and across the North Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Barents Sea, where temperatures were at least 2.0°C (3.6°F) above average,” NOAA scientists observed. The three-month season, June-August, surpassed the previous global record reached in both 2016 and 2019. This period is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and they also had warmer weather than normal. Australia also had a drier than usual winter, 31 percent below average for precipitation.Globally, the ten hottest Augusts have all happened since 1998, and the five warmest have happened since 2015.Scientists believe 2020 will very likely rank in the top five warmest years on record. Also noted in the report, arctic sea ice continues to decline. The average Arctic sea ice coverage in August was the third smallest on record, about 29 percent below the 1981-2010 average. 1509
