Uber has agreed to pay 56 current and former employees about ,900 each, or .9 million, to settle their claims of gender discrimination, harassment and hostile work environment. On Monday, lawyers for the plaintiffs filed paperwork in a Northern California district court that outlined how a million settlement announced in April would be divvied up. In addition to the .9 million, another .1 million will be divided among more than 480 workers, including the 56 who are receiving the other payouts. The lawsuit was filed against Uber in October 2017 by three Latina engineers who alleged they were paid less than their white or Asian male colleagues. The women claimed Uber used a discriminatory "stack ranking" system, alleging "female employees and employees of color are systematically undervalued ... because [they] receive, on average, lower rankings despite equal or better performance."Those stack rankings were then used, in part, to determine promotions, according to the lawsuit. Uber also set employee pay based on their past compensation, which inherently disadvantages women.Fifty-six workers came forward to describe their experiences with discrimination and harassment at Uber. They are a subset of a broader class that includes about 480 women and underrepresented minorities who worked in certain software engineering jobs. That broader pool of people will receive a payout of about ,700 each, based on their length of employment, title and location. Two people have opted out of the settlement thus far for undisclosed reasons, according to the paperwork.Related: Uber finally hires a chief financial officerUber did not immediately respond to request for comment. A hearing to make final approval of the settlement is slated for November 6.In July 2017, Uber said it bumped up salaries to ensure all employees, regardless of gender or race, are paid equally based on their location, job and tenure in the role. Uber said it also re-evaluated employee salaries after paying bonuses in March.Last month, Uber's head of human resources Liane Hornsey resigned following an internal investigation into how she handled racial discrimination claims within the company.EEOC investigators launched an investigation last August. They've interviewed former and current Uber employees and requested internal documents related to the company's hiring practices and wages, among other gender-related topics.The-CNN-Wire 2445

VERO BEACH, Fla. — It was around 9 in the morning, on Aug. 21 that Vero Beach police first became aware of Frank Cook."This guy parked his car in the middle of the road and took off running," one 911 caller said.Five more 911 callers would follow."Says his truck is out of gas, and his wife and kids are in danger at a school around the corner here," another caller said. "He's on something. He looks like he is about to die."Then, Cook ran into a Community Church and pre-school. "Community Pre-School here in Vero Beach. He's in the hallway in our main lobby. He's not well, he's not well," a caller said. "He's barefoot, he's delusional. He said there were people after him this morning. I'm not sure his children were actually here. He keeps grabbing at something in the back of his waist belt," another caller said. His children weren't there. When police caught up with Cook, after he ran a mile or two from the pre-school, Cook told them he had taken cocaine and an unknown substance. He asked them to check on his wife and children, screaming profanities, and telling officers, "If we don't go now, the samurai ninjas are going to kill my family."When told his children were OK, Cook responded, "What about my wife! She's probably been abducted."Incident reports show a witness at the pre-school noticed Frank Cook "was armed when he was inside the building yelling and causing a disturbance inside the hallway of the church building."The witness "stated that he could hear the subject yelling inside the building that "I am not here to shoot anyone" and shouting for his kids.  A receptionist added that Cook "kept trying to get into some of the classrooms," so "she had all the teachers in the nearby classrooms lock-down and asked the rest of the classrooms to do the same."Police did find a loaded gun with "one round in the chamber" in Cook's waistband, although reports say Cook "never displayed a firearm nor made any threats to hurt anyone."Pre-school loophole"You had this gentleman walking in with a gun. It was very unsafe for everyone, and it was legal for him to do that,"  Florida State Sen. Lori Berman said. She's right.Following the incident, Cook was only charged with resisting arrest because had a concealed carry license. The State Attorney's Office says under Florida law they couldn't consider gun charges because Cook can carry his gun into a pre-school.The concealed carry statute prevents a licensed owner from carrying into a secondary or elementary school. Pre-schools do not apply to the law. "Why is there a division between the younger children?" Berman said. "Especially after Parkland, we're all on heightened alert when anytime somebody goes into a school who doesn't belong there." Six years ago, Berman tried to make it illegal to bring a gun into any child care facility. The bill died.Berman says she's going to "look into the possibility of filing legislation to close the loopholes that currently exist."But Eric Friday, the general counsel for the Florida Carry Organization, doesn't think it's that simple. "There's nothing you can write into a new law that would have changed anything here or is going to prevent the next criminal," Friday said.Friday says there should be fewer gun-free zones."There's no reason why a person who is licensed to carry a concealed firearm is safe on the sidewalk outside of a school but suddenly a danger because they cross an imaginary boundary," Friday said.Berman disagrees. "It's something I'm going to continue to advocate for because I think it's crazy we have that distinction right now in our statutes. We don't want to send the message for people, yes it's legal for you to walk into a pre-school with a gun," Berman said.Currently, Frank Cook is legally barred from owning, possessing or purchasing a gun or ammo over the next 18 months. That's because he's on drug probation. Cook was arrested for possession of cocaine in June 2018.Also, while in a hospital emergency room, police said they saw Cook going through "drastic mood swings of anger, to sadness, and then to being calm as if coming down off narcotics."According to police records, Cook told them he "used cocaine every day for the past three years," "believed his house was "wiretapped" and that "helicopters flying to spy on him."Doctors decided to hold him, and police completed a risk protection order because "of multiple firearms at the residence." In early October, an Indian River County judge approved the risk protection order, barring Cook from owning, possessing, or purchasing a gun/ammo for the next 12 months. Cook had to hand over his concealed carry weapons permit as well. 4870

Two major airlines. A cybersecurity firm. Six car rental brands. A home security company. An Omaha bank. Companies have scrambled to cut ties with the National Rifle Association over the past couple of days, and the list continued to grow into the weekend.Delta Air Lines announced Saturday morning that it's ending discounted rates for NRA members. "We will be requesting that the NRA remove our information from their website," the company said in a tweet.United Airlines followed a short time later, saying the company will no longer offer discounts on flights to the NRA annual meeting. And TrueCar, a car buying service, said late Friday that it would end its deal with the NRA as of February 28.The companies were the latest to abandon partnerships with the NRA amid a renewed public debate over tightened gun laws following a school shooting in Florida last week that left 17 dead.First National Bank of Omaha on Thursday pledged to stop issuing an NRA-branded Visa card. A bank spokesperson said "customer feedback" prompted a review of its partnership with the NRA, and it chose not to renew its current contract. There was also a wave of car rental outfits. Enterprise Holdings, which runs the Enterprise, Alamo and National car rental groups, announced that it will end the discount deal it has with the NRA on March 26.On Friday, car rental company Hertz said in a tweet that it's also ending its NRA rental car discount program. The NRA was advertising a Hertz partnership on its "member benefits" page as recently as Friday morning, but that listing disappeared by the afternoon. The National Rifle Association did not immediately comment on Saturday about the decisions by the various companies to sever ties.Avis and Budget, which are owned by the same company, were also listed as discount providers on NRA's website Friday. But when reached for comment, Avis Budget Group told CNNMoney that it too was ending its partnership with the organization."Effective March 26, our brands will no longer provide the NRA member discount," an Avis Budget Group spokesperson said via email.More big names followed suit.A spokesperson for moving van lines Allied and North American, which are both owned by Sirva, said Friday that the brands "no longer have an affiliate relationship with the NRA effective immediately.""We have asked them to remove our listing from their benefits site," the spokesperson added. The company did not describe what kind of benefits had been offered to NRA members.Insurance giant MetLife said Friday that it's ending its discounts on home and auto insurance for NRA members.Symantec, which makes the Norton anti-virus software and owns the identity theft protection company LifeLock, said Friday that it is severing ties with the NRA. And SimpliSafe, which sells home security systems, said the same.Related: First National Bank of Omaha will stop issuing NRA Visa cardNone of the companies gave details about why or when they decided to cut ties with the NRA, but the news comes as the hashtag #BoycottNRA has circulated widely on social media. After the shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, survivors of the massacre have protested for stronger gun laws. Students across the country have walked out of class to demand new restrictions on the sale of firearms and an end to mass shootings in the U.S.Some survivors of mass shootings confronted NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch at a CNN town hall on Wednesday. Loesch blamed a flawed system for letting people who shouldn't be able to buy guns slip through the cracks. Two other companies -- the insurer Chubb and Wyndham Hotel Group -- confirmed to CNNMoney Friday that they've recently ended partnerships with the NRA. However, those decisions were made prior to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida last week.Chubb said in a statement that it "provided notice of our intent to discontinue participation in the NRA Carry Guard insurance program" three months ago.The NRA Carry Guard program offers coverage for certain costs associated with gun-related accidents or incidents in which the gun owner claims they lawfully acted in self defense.Lockton, another insurance firm, continues to underwrite policies for the NRA Carry Guard program, according to the NRA's website. Lockton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Wyndham Hotel Group said in a statement that it "ended our relationship with the NRA late last year."--CNN's Julia Horowitz, Emanuella Grinberg and Steve Almasy contributed to this report.
