BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A well-known economist said Monday that the biggest problem in China is not inflation, but shifting its economic structure to maintain sustainable growth."The biggest challenge faced by China is economic restructuring in order to shift the economy to a more balanced way that will provide sustainable economic growth," Stephen Roach, former chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, told Xinhua."In the post-crisis environment, the shift means to build a consumer-led economy, and that is the overriding challenge in China," said Roach, who currently serves as non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia.Residents' incomes in China remain at a low level. "People's incomes are only 42 percent of the GDP, whereas in the US the rate is 86 percent. So the government should raise the income of the citizens, especially when China wants to stimulate domestic private consumption," said Roach."Of course, that does not mean the Chinese government should ignore the risk of higher inflation," he said.Official data showed that China's October Consumer Price Index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high at 4.4 percent."There is a certain amount of momentum to inflation, so it's likely to be the a problem over the next 12 months. If the government acts quickly, it will be able to limit the problem, or else China could be facing this problem in 2012 as well," said Roach.Roach suggested China should take broad and comprehensive approaches in dealing with inflation, and the medium-term goal of the shifted economic structure need to be maintained."The government has to demonstrate its resolve in dealing with inflation, and property market assets. It's a challenge, but I think the government is up to the challenge," according to Roach.

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Monday urged drivers to use extreme caution in Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi in southern China which has been hit by freezing rains.Motorists were asked to strictly follow the instructions of traffic police and drive slowly after the expressways in the regions were reopened for use after being temporarily closed due to the severe weather.Freezing rains that swept south China's Guizhou Province, Hunan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have caused road surfaces to ice up in parts of the Lanhai and Hukun Expressways. As a result, many vehicles in the regions were stranded.Local authorities have been ordered to take emergency measures to break up ice found on the roads, keep traffic moving and avoid shutting expressways. As of 4 p.m. Monday, the 1,500 vehicles that were stranded on Hukun Expressway near the juncture of Hunan and Guizhou provinces had safely reached Guizhou, traveling at speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour.Meanwhile, another 1,900 vehicles that had been stranded on National Highway 210 where Guangxi and Guizhou meet, have also reached Guizhou.Noting that Guizhou in the coming three days is expecting more icy rain, according to weather forecasts, Huang Ming, deputy minister at the MPS, stressed improved measures be taken to ensure traffic continues to flow in the region.
BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China rose for the 15th consecutive month in October, indicating China remains a favored investment destination for foreign businesses.Inbound FDI increased 7.86 percent year on year in October to 7.663 billion U.S. dollars, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Tuesday. The October figure means inbound FDI for the first 10 months of the year totaled 82.003 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 15.71 percent.MOC spokesman Yao Jian said at a press conference China remains a hot spot for foreign investors.Foreign businesses have begun to shift their investments from export-orientated sectors to domestic market-orientated businesses because of China's improved legal system and its expanding market, he said.In the first 10 months of the year, the manufacturing sector received 47.59 percent of FDI inflows while the services industry got 45 percent.A total of 21,181 foreign-invested enterprises were approved for establishment during the 10-month period, up 16.62 percent from a year earlier. In September inbound FDI grew 6.14 percent year on year. The acceleration in the rate of inbound FDI growth was due to the U.S.'s second round of quantitative easing, some analysts explained.Yao denied the link but said the Chinese government is keeping an eye on liquidity.
