TULSA, Okla. — An Oklahoma woman has faced terrifying health scares over the last year from a tick bite. Nancy Phelps' tongue and face have swollen up many times. She has also spent countless hours in the hospital because she could not breathe. She learned it is all because she was bit by a Lonestar Tick while she was playing with her grandkids in her yard in the spring of 2017."They fall off trees," Phelps said. "They're out in the grass." She started seeing symptoms lke rashes and having stomach problems early on. Phelps thought it was random.Then in the fall, she started going into anaphylactic shock, meaning she could not breathe because of an allergic reaction. "Within about a week time, I was in the emergency room with anaphylaxis eight different times," Phelps said. Several doctors later, Phelps learned that tick bite gave her the Alpha Gal Allergy. It causes an allergic reaction to all mammal-based products."They could feed on an infected animal, get a parasite that then when they feed on a human that human could be infected," said Luisa Krug, the epidemiology supervisor for the Tulsa County Health Department. The CDC said this week that diseases caused by infected ticks, fleas and mosquitoes have tripled in the last 13 years. More than 640,000 cases have been reported. When Phelps consumes mammal bi-products or is around them, she has a severe allergic reaction. Her face and tongue start swelling up. She said she has to inject herself with an Epi-Pen once every one to two weeks. "Anything boxed, in cans, anything you would typically buy off the shelf," Phelps listed what she cannot eat. "Pizza...I didn't realize I liked pizza so much, but those kinds of things are non-existent anymore."Her allergy is so bad that she even has to worry about cross-contamination. Phelp said she bought all new pots for her home. Eating out is nearly impossible now. She has to show restaurants a document she keeps on her phone that lists what she can and cannot consume. Phelps can no longer take gel cap pills, because they are made with animal bi-products. Make up, toiletries, laundry and dishwashing soaps and certain clothing are also a problem.Phelps wants others to take note of her story and take serious precautions. "It's avoidance and being aware of our surroundings," Phelps said.The health department suggests wearing long sleeves and pants outside to avoid being bitten by bugs. (KGTV) - The family of a Navy corpsman who died on a Southern California military base is alleging a possible coverup by members of the military following this week’s announcement from the Marines that a servicemember has been charged in connection with the death investigation.ABC10 News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner first broke the story in 2019 after learning that the sudden death of 30-year-old HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon was being investigated as a homicide, not a suicide, like the family said they were led to believe. The Navy corpsman, or medic, died last summer on the Twentynine Palms military base, located a few hours northeast of San Diego.On Thursday, ABC10 News spoke to parents Jose and Sandra De Leon. They were overcome with emotion after learning about the new charges. “The good news in all of this is that the long wait has not been in vain," said Jose. Sandra added, “Sometimes I just listen to [my son's] recordings just to hear his voice."On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Marines sent ABC10 News the following statement:“As you might know, this incident is still under investigation. I can confirm, however, that charges have been preferred against one of the individuals for dereliction of duty resulting in death and dereliction of duty. A hearing is not scheduled at this time. The other individuals are being investigated. I will keep you updated once we receive more information.”De Leon’s parents first contacted ABC10 News for help last year after claiming that the military stonewalled them from getting answers about their son's death. They said that Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) would only tell them that there was a shooting on base at a housing unit with other corpsmen present and a firearm was produced.ABC10 News then learned from a source with close military ties that NCIS confirmed the death was being investigated as a homicide, not a suicide.“The phone call from that residence using my son’s phone was that it was a suicide,” Jose said on Thursday. He added that prosecutors told him the servicemember charged is a Navy corpsman who was at a house party on base with his son and other corpsmen. He said prosecutors also told him that some of those corpsmen are likely facing upcoming charges.He added Thursday, “We know that the firearm was dry fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed.” “These men need to be held accountable for what they did...for their actions, for their lack of courage and for their lack of honor,” added Sandra.A spokesperson for NCIS reported this week that the investigation is still open. United Airlines is reportedly working with the CDC to alert passengers onboard a flight last week from Orlando to Los Angeles they may have been exposed to COVID-19 after a passenger had an inflight medical emergency and later died. A man who tried to help the man is now reporting symptoms.United says a man onboard flight UA591 on December 14 had coronavirus-like symptoms, including loss of taste and smell, according to statements his wife made, before suffering a medical emergency onboard.A nurse and EMT began CPR on the passenger as the flight was diverted to New Orleans to get the man help.When the plane landed, they believed the man’s emergency was cardiac arrest, and they allowed passengers to “take a later flight or continue on with their travel plans,” the airline told NBC News.The airline now says they were contacted by the CDC and “are sharing requested information with the agency so they can work with local health officials to conduct outreach to any customer the CDC believes may be at risk for possible exposure or infection," a representative for the airline told CBS LA.The man who says he performed CPR on the passenger, Tony Aldapa, says he is now experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. Aldapa said he used his EMT training to try and help the man."There were three of us that were essentially tag-teaming doing chest compressions, probably about 45 minutes,” Aldapa told CBS LA. 1413
