SILVER SPRING, Md. -- For Habibah Jackson, the path to a healthier life may look like a personal journey, with only her dog, Rocky, for company.It’s anything but.“They like to say, ‘Oh, you're a walking group.’ We’re so much more than a walking group,” she said. “We like to say we're a ‘walking movement.’”Jackson helps lead neighborhood walks for GirlTrek, a nonprofit group of nearly 800,000 African American women taking one step at a time, together.The pandemic changed it a bit. So, to unite all of the now-solo walkers across the country, GirlTrek’s Ebony Andrews said the group launched a podcast, called Black History Bootcamp, focusing on African American women’s history.“Our focus is to help save the lives of Black women by inspiring them to take charge of their self-care, to own their joy, to claim what's their best lives,” Andrews said. “And one of the primary ways we do that is through encouraging community and encouraging walking.”It’s a move that can make a difference. According to the CDC, Black women are at high risk for heart disease and stroke and three times more likely than white women to die in childbirth. Some studies have linked those health effects for African American women to chronic stress, due to experiencing racism.GirlTrek seeks to counteract that.“Walking helps with stress. Walking is also something that requires limited resources. It's putting one foot in front of the other and getting out the front door,” Andrews said. “We have a saying that we say within our office that, ‘When women walk, things change.’”It’s something Jackson sees, too.“If you look at the social change that's happening now, imagine if you weren't in shape enough to walk - how could you actively protest if you're not physically able to keep a stance?” Jackson said. “People are walking for eight hours. SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - The City Council in Solana Beach wants to make it illegal to sell any kind of flavored tobacco within the city."What we're doing right now is a reaction to what is literally an epidemic," says Councilmember David Zito.He says the Council has seen the numbers from the CDC and other health agencies showing a rise in underage smoking, mostly related to the increase in e-cigarettes. That's why they're taking such a drastic step."This is not a safe thing to do and we need to take these kind of precautions," says Zito.Under the proposed ban, stores in Solana Beach wouldn't be allowed to sell any kind of flavored tobacco. That means menthol cigars, flavored hookah tobacco, flavored cigars, e-cigarettes or anything else that has a "distinguishable tast or aroma or both, other than the taste or aroma of tobacco, imparted by a Tobacco Product or any byproduct produced by the Tobacco Product."Right now, the ban would only affect a small handful of stores in the city. The two gas stations within Solana Beach already limit their sales of flavored products to just menthol. There are a few other convenience stores that sell e-cigarettes and other flavored products. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed on Tuesday that legislators would not go home for the holidays without an approval of a stimulus bill.“We're not leaving here without a COVID package. It's not gonna happen. We're gonna stay here until we get a COVID package. No matter how long it takes, we’ll be here,” McConnell said.Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a similar proclamation.But both sides have been working on economic relief for months, but have failed to come to any sort of compromise. But a major sticking point is on whether companies should be protected from coronavirus-related lawsuits. The White House and McConnell have said companies need this protection in order to stay open amid the pandemic. Pelosi and Democrats are against the proposal, citing concerns that businesses will not follow public health guidelines.“This is protection for our small businesses, so that they're not held liable for COVID incidences through no fault of their own,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Tuesday. ”And (Pelosi is) really playing up to the trial lawyers and opposing liability protection, which should be something that's just mere common sense.”Two weeks ago, a bipartisan group of legislators proposed a 0 billion stimulus plan that would extend funds for additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks per worker. The legislation also would replenish funds for the Paycheck Protection Program, which helped companies affected by the pandemic make payroll.There would also be 0 billion earmarked for state and local governments, which have seen a drop in tax revenue due to the pandemic. Social media company TikTok says they plan on hiring around 10,000 people in the U.S. over the next three years, according to multiple outlets. The announcement comes after lawmakers and Trump administration officials have questioned the company’s data collection methods and threatened to ban TikTok.TikTok currently employs about 1,400 people in the U.S., a huge increase already over the 500 employees they had on January 1, 2020, according to Axios."These are good-paying jobs that will help us continue to build a fun and safe experience and protect our community's privacy," a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement provided to CNN. The jobs will range from customer service, to content moderation to engineering.TikTok is owned by ByteDance, which is based in Beijing. TikTok doesn’t operate in China, however ByteDance operates a similar app in China called Douyin.Several lawmakers, including Chuck Schumer, Tom Cotton and Josh Hawley have publicly said they worry TikTok user data could find its way to the Chinese government. SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A construction worker was hit by a car and killed Wednesday morning on state Route 94 in Spring Valley.The crash was reported shortly after 12:10 a.m. on eastbound SR-94 near Avocado Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.ABC 10News learned the victim was a worker for Granite Construction, and he was working alongside other construction workers when he was struck.Cones had been set down on the roadway, allowing traffic to pass on the left while work was being conducted on the right side. However, some workers told ABC 10News a car traveling on the wrong side of the cones struck their co-worker.Witnesses said the victim was dragged about 40 feet before the car, a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage, stopped.The 41-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The car's 24-year-old female driver remained at the scene for CHP questioning.The crash remains under investigation. The CHP said, "At this time, alcohol and or drugs are not believed to have played a factor in this collision."No other injuries were reported. 1073
