SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A nurse at UC San Diego Health is turning to music when trying to connect with patients during telemedicine visits."I've always listened to music so I started teasing my patients 'hey you owe me a nurses fee' and they'd be like 'what's that?' I'd tell them it's your favorite song, a lot of people responded well and it'd help build a rapport with them." It might sound silly but Joe Bautista, nurse with UCSD for over 6 years, said it helped him build a connection with patients in ways he'd never imagine."I was like what's your favorite song? And she said 'Tennessee Whiskey' and I said why? She said 'I really need a Tennessee Whiskey' right now so that was really funny."His patients are recovering after testing positives for COVID-19. "You're on the phone with them but you also hear their stressors, and their anxiety and you want to provide them comfort," Bautista said. His job is to track and assess their progress along the way. The music part, he said, is an added bonus, "It was for me to find a connection with each of my patients to make sure I could advocate for them the best I could."He said in nursing school when patients were sick and feeling uneased, he would ask about their favorite song and their faces would light up. "They're able to talk to us freely because I'm showing interest in something that's personal to them so they can develop that trust with me." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A mountain lion cub rescued by the San Diego Humane Society continues to make great strides in its recovery.The Humane Society said the female cub was found by Vista Grande Fire Station firefighters near a road in Idyllwild on Sept. 2. The cub was “semiconscious, extremely emaciated, dehydrated, weak and had tremors,” according to the Humane Society.Under the care of the Humane Society’s Project Wildlife, the cub -- believed to be 14 weeks old -- has made significant health progress.Through daily fluid therapy, medications, and proper meals, the Humane Society said the cub has increased her weight from 10.5 pounds to 22 pounds.Christine Barton, the director of Operations & Wildlife Rehabilitation at the Humane Society’s Ramona campus, said, “With each passing day, she becomes more active and responsive and, though she still has some medical issues to overcome from being in such a fragile state, we are delighted she has responded well to our treatment and are hopeful she will make a full recovery. Mountain lions are special predators and we are proud to have an expert team trusted by the state of California to care for the species.”The Humane Society added:“Mountain lions typically stay with their mother until they disperse to live a solitary life at around 12-18 months of age. Because it is not safe to return a young mountain lion to the wild if found injured or orphaned as a kitten, Project Wildlife has been working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to monitor her progress and when stabilized, to ensure she has a good permanent home at a qualified facility.San Diego Humane Society acquired the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona on Sept. 1 from the Humane Society of the United States. This mountain lion cub is the first wildlife patient admitted at the Ramona Campus since San Diego Humane Society’s Project Wildlife took over.Project Wildlife is one of only two licensed rehabilitation organizations that have a special agreement with the state to work with black bears and are also routinely called on to assist with other apex predators, such as mountain lions.” 2153

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report from the Auditor of the State of California questions whether the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has implemented recommendations outlined in a previous audit.The report "Recommendations Not Fully Implemented After One Year" presented the status of recommendations that are more than one year old and have not been fully implemented by the audited entities.According to the report, a 2017 audit about Concealed Carry Weapon Licenses, made several recommendations regarding the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's program.The recommendations included, "To ensure that it follows state law's requirements for revoking licenses, San Diego should immediately revoke CCW licenses and should then inform Justice that it has revoked licenses whenever license holders become prohibited persons. Additionally, San Diego should notify Justice when it suspends a license, or a license is surrendered."The 2017 audit also recommended, "To ensure that it maximizes allowable revenue from its CCW program, San Diego should immediately pursue increasing its initial, renewal, and amendment fees to the maximum amounts allowable under state law."According to the Auditor's newly released report, the estimated date of completion of those recommendations is unknown.10News contacted the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to ask about the status of the recommendations. It turns out the Sheriff's Department did make changes.In a statement, a spokesperson for the department wrote: "In 2017, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was made aware of the findings and recommendations by the State Auditor from the report on Concealed Weapons Licenses. The recommendations that were suggested were taken into account and changes were implemented in 2018. The changes reflected all of the recommendations except for the proposed increase of fees. The Sheriff's Department did not agree on placing a high fee that would otherwise prevent the issuance of a CCW for a qualified and genuine necessity solely because of financial hardship. The adjustment of those fees is now mandated by the state with the passage and implementation of Assembly Bill 1297 this year. Sheriff's Financial Services is currently looking at our business practice for reviewing the fees collected. That fee will ultimately need to be approved by the Board of Supervisors."The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is the local agency tasked with approving or denying CCWs.Team 10 previously reported about a spike in CCW permits.In 2017, the department approved 171 licenses. In 2018, the department approved 707, a more than 300 percent increase from the year before. In the first seven months of 2019, the department has already authorized 767. 2754

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A lifelong San Diego resident says he's sick of seeing overgrown brush in local medians — and he's willing to put himself in the weeds to resolve it.Adam Huntington says the weeds are giving local beach towns a bad look."Great people, great vibes, unfortunately our aesthetics aren't matching up to the great vibes right now," Huntington says. Next to a traffic sign, he says, "the weed was literally growing this high all around this."While some may be used to the weeds sprouting from Mission Blvd. medians, Huntington said he can't ignore the eyesore anymore. "I don't think anyone wants to see their beach look like this when the come to visit it," Huntington said.So the mortgage loan officer has been cleaning up the medians in his spare time. He first uses a weed wacker to cut down the brush, then rakes out the weeds, and finally sweeps and cleans them up. He's been posting his progress on social media. And it's not just Mission Beach.Clairemont Lutheran Church is doing similar work, organizing volunteers to clean up overgrown medians.Huntington has complained to the city and is frustrated with their response. But officials tell us they are trying to make this issue a priority.The mayor's allocated over a million dollars for vegetation and brush abatement in the current fiscal year. With that money the city has cleaned up weeds on 42 miles of median, completing more than 200 requests since July 1. The city blames excessive weed and vegetation growth to the wet winter and spring. Huntington plans to tackle other areas of the city, and says he'd be pleasantly surprised if the city beats him to it. 1646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company is looking to capitalize on a new law that legalizes the growing of hemp in the United States. Medical Marijuana Inc., based in Sorrento Valley, already has a line of CBD products but has to import the raw hemp from outside the United States. That will soon change. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill. Inside the bi-partisan, 7 billion bill was a revision to the federal laws on hemp, which had largely outlawed commercial production since the 1930s. The bill also removed hemp from being classified as a schedule 1 drug, the DEA category for substances with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” “We really think this is going to be a tremendous growth market over the next three to five years,” said Stuart Titus, president and CEO of Medical Marijuana Inc. Founded in 2009, the company has several lines of CBD-based products for both humans and animals. With the new laws, he says they hope to start using hemp grown in the United States for the products they sell here. 1081
