The Portland (Oregon) Police Department said that 49 people were arrested stemming from what the police called “riots” in Oregon's largest city over the weekend.Sunday marked the 74th day of unrest in Portland following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd who died while in Minneapolis Police custody. The period of unrest included federal agents engaging with protesters at the city’s federal courthouse, which prompted nationwide scrutiny over the use of federal officers for domestic law enforcement purposes.Among the demonstrators arrested over the weekend was Demetria Hester, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist who leads the group Mothers United for Black Lives Matter. The 46-year-old demonstrator was arrested Sunday on charges of disorderly conduct and interfering with a peace officer.Hester testified in a hate crime case earlier this year against a man involved in a sentenced train attack, saying that she had been attacked by self-described white nationalist Jeremy Christian before the deadly incident. Christian wound up be sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of killing two people in a hate crime.Friday night marked the most arrests from the weekend, 24, and the injury of an Oregon State Police Trooper, who police said was wounded from being struck in the head by a rock. The department said that there were two separate gatherings in the city on Friday. The first, the police say, was a peaceful demonstration that officers did not interact with. But a second gathering nearby, the department said, began to turn violent. On Saturday, a second protest took place and lasted peacefully for four hours, according to police. But tensions began to rise after the group marched, and vehicles began to illegally block intersections. Some in the crowd then set fire to Portland’s police union building, prompting the department’s officers to engage with the crowd.“People within the crowd committed crimes when they erected a fence, pushed dumpsters into the street to block traffic, set a dumpster on fire, vandalized the PPA office with spray paint, and destroyed security cameras,” the Portland Police said. “At 11:35 p.m., people within the crowd broke the window to the PPA Office, unlawfully entered, and started a fire, committing the crimes of criminal mischief, burglary, and attempted arson.”On Sunday, an additional 16 arrests were conducted as two Portland officers were injured by a mortar. 2448

The Instagram account "@asu_covid.parties" gained more than 900 followers in less than three months, but not for a good reason, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday by the Arizona Board of Regents. The suit, going after whoever is behind the mysterious social media account, accusing them of false advertising, trademark infringement, and unfair competition."...to promote a so-called "Hoax-19" Covid party, claiming that Covid-19 is "a big fat hoax," and spreading dangerous misinformation about Covid19 just as students are returning to ASU's campuses to begin classes on August 20, 2020," according to the lawsuit. Its posts, considered dangerous by ASU, citing repeated messages to ignore safety precautions, and claiming to be working on planning massive parties."No more social distancing. No more masks. It's time to party!" read one post."We will party. We do not care what you snowflakes say. COVID-19 is a fat hoax," read another. The account, already seen by some students living on campus."It's kind of an embarrassment honestly," said freshman Bella Rusy. "I don't know why anyone would want to do that," added Allan Rodriguez. "Especially with everything going on right now, parties should be the last thing you should do." ASU accuses the account of posting false and offensive statements about ASU, and its leaders."In several posts the owner of this account portrays ASU and its leadership as Nazis, referring to ASU's President Crow as Führer Crow and comparing ASU's mask requirement to forcing Jews to wear a yellow Star of David."The suit goes on to say ASU leaders have been pleading with Facebook, the company who runs Instagram, to remove the account, but have been unsuccessful."Despite actual knowledge of the infringement, and the ability to control and monitor the "asu_covid.parties" account on its platform – and contrary to its own terms, policies and community guidelines – Facebook continues to provide its Instagram service to "asu_covid.parties," which in turn provides the means of infringement.""Further worsening this situation, the initial investigation indicates that the parties behind this account may be located in Russia and are using the account to sow confusion and conflict and to interfere with the health of the Arizona State University community by trying to worsen the pandemic here."Living on campus, students like Justin Gutfeld believes most students hope to keep from spreading the virus among the ASU community, after seeing universities across the country reverse in-person learning after only days of students returning to campus."The last thing we want to do is spend all this effort like moving in to just move out again," he said. "That's just a very easy way to like ruin it for a whole lot of people who like worked hard to come here."Friday night, the account was seemingly removed from Instagram. Facebook telling the Arizona Republic the account violated their policies but adds they disagree the account violated any trademark rights ASU might have.In a statement, ASU President Michael Crow said, "We simply cannot and will not allow the institution and its trademarks to be used for the manipulative and inappropriate purposes of those who cowardly hide behind social media collaborators like Instagram." 3279

The President's eldest son Donald Trump Jr. downplayed Monday a 2016 meeting between top campaign aides to his father and a Russian lawyer, saying the highly scrutinized engagement "ended up being about essentially nothing that was relevant" to questions of collusion. The remarks, which came during a friendly interview on The Laura Ingraham Show, came after President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter the June 2016 meeting was intended to get damaging information on his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton — contradicting a statement he dictated when the meeting came to light a year ago.In the interview Monday, Trump Jr. said the session lasted 20 minutes, and maintained the central focus was on adoptions — even as he conceded the Clinton dirt was how the Russian lawyers secured the meeting in the first place. 822

The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association broke its silence on Tuesday, saying it wants to set the record straight amid calls to disband the city’s police department. In a lengthy statement with comments from a number of members of Minneapolis’ police department, officers placed blame on the unrest on local politicians.“Crime won’t be wished away, and we can’t simply abolish or defund police departments. Politicians who suggest this aren’t serious about solving problems in their community,” said Rich Walker, officer and director of the Minneapolis Police Federation.Earlier this month, members of the Minneapolis City Council voted to disband the city’s police department. The vote came after the death of George Floyd while in custody of officers, which prompted massive unrest in the city.Councilmember Steve Fletcher said in a Twitter post that it’s time to “declare policing as we know it a thing of the past.”“Our city needs a public safety capacity that doesn’t fear our residents,” Fletcher said. “That doesn’t need a gun at a community meeting. That considers itself part of our community. That doesn’t resort quickly to pepper spray when people are understandably angry. That doesn’t murder black men.”The police union said it takes issue with how officers are being portrayed by politicians.“The only way we can begin the work to rebuild relationships and strengthen communities is if politicians stop characterizing law enforcement as violent racists and demonizing the police,” Sherral Schmidt, sergeant and vice president of the Minneapolis Police Federation, said. “There is a great deal of work toward building a safer Minneapolis, but it cannot happen until politicians stop pointing fingers and bring us all together to move us forward.”Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who opposes disbanding the department, said he takes issue with how the union can appeal terminations of officers through arbitration.“What's more disappointing is that the most essential change (the Minnesota legislature) could have made — preventing arbitrators from reinstating police officers who engage in egregious misconduct — was never considered,” Frey said this week. The police union said that the arbitration is something that the city and its officers agreed to as part of a standard practice for public employees.“The system of workplace justice – which is closely akin to our criminal justice system in many respects – requires that all public employees, even police officers, have the opportunity to contest discipline before a neutral third-party” said Schmidt. To read the full statement, click here. 2623
