SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Native American artists are finding new audiences and venues to display their craft as American Indian stories enter pop culture."Some of us refer to it as 'Native Sovereignty,' being in charge of your own narrative," says Joely Proudfit, the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center Director. "Who better to tell our story than us?"Proudfit says the change is welcome after decades of Native Americans being depicted poorly in pop culture, mainly because non-native people have told the stories. Thanks to new ways of telling stories, like streaming services, social media, and more access to film festivals and book publishing, that's changing. There's also a greater demand for stories by Native American voices."I think audiences are hungry for not diversity for diversity's sake. They're just interested in other communities, other worlds, engagement, and really authenticity," says Proudfit. The California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center and Cal State San Marcos sponsor the California American Indian & Indigenous Film Festival. Since starting in 2013, it has grown from small groups in a classroom to taking over the Pechanga Resort and Casino. It's now the largest Native American Film Festival on tribal land in the country. The festival's growth parallels the rise of other Native American voices in different mediums."The biggest change is the increased number of native voices and the medium in which native folks have been able to express their creativity," says Dr. David Kamper, the Chair of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University.Kamper says he sees more American Indian voices in books, online, and in fashion. He says that representation, whether it's Nike's N7 line of shoes and clothes or best-sellers like "The Only Good Indians" or "The Beadworkers," is essential to helping Native Americans define their culture in modern-day America."Seeing native films, seeing native art, seeing native clothing, fashion, that is done in a contemporary way, is a very loud statement against a settler-colonial narrative that native people aren't here anymore," Kamper says.He also points to online messaging like the hashtag #OnNativeLand as one way the next generation is reclaiming their identity.Proudfit says she's excited for what the future holds for Native American representation in Pop Culture."I think it's just a really exciting time for indigenous cinema, indigenous arts, and native storytelling. I encourage audiences to kind of look beyond Native American Heritage Month, and add us to their list," she says.ABC 10News Reporter Jared Aarons asked both Proudfit and Kamper for suggestions on books, movies, and more if people want to explore Native American culture represented in modern pop culture. Here is a brief sample of their recommendations.MOVIES AND DIRECTORS:Smoke SignalsBlood Quantum (or other horror films by Jeff Barnaby)Zoe Hopkins films (like Kayak to Klemtu or The Embargo Project)Hostiles (by Scott Cooper)Tasha Hubbard filmsSterling Harjoe filmsBOOKS:The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham JonesThe "Trickster" Trilogy by Eden RobinsonThe Inconvenient Indian by Thomas KingThey're There by Tommy OrangeThe Beadworkers by Beth PiatoteFASHION:Nike N7 LineJaime Okuma designs (featured in Vogue and at The Met)Bethany Yellowtail's "Indigenously Designed for All" 3360

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ocean Beach residents say they are uniting to address issues they believe stem from people living in vehicles.OB resident Michael Copley and nearly 100 others emailed San Diego Police this week, asking for officers to step up patrols in their neighborhood. "I'm just a citizen. I have no authority, I can't enforce anything," Michael Copley says. "But I was asking [police], 'please we want police presence in Ocean Beach.'"RELATED: Red curb in Ocean Beach is a fake fire zone, City of San Diego saysCopley says the large number of people living out of their vehicles in the neighborhood are fueling several community issues like vandalism and the prevalence of drugs. In a response posted to social media by SDPD officer David Surwilo, Surwilo says the concerns have been sent to patrol supervisors so that they "are aware of your community safety issues, what you are seeing and dealing with and your requests for assistance to address these issues."SDPD Capt. Scott Wahl adds, "We are out in the Ocean Beach area, seven days a week, making sure that we are addressing these issues. And it's important that the community continues to provide that information to us."The post referenced complaints pertaining to areas of Ocean Beach, Robb Field, and dog beach over vehicle campers, drug use, homelessness, and quality of life."One person sleeping in their car is not a big deal. But 100 people sleeping in their vans, that creates an impact on the community," Copley said.In May, city leaders approved restrictions on people living in their vehicles within San Diego. Part of those restriction prevent people from sleeping in vehicles within 500 feet of a school or home and overnight anywhere in the city from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.Wahl says that now, the city has more beds and parking lots available for free to those living in vehicles that can help alleviate the concerns. But according to a July report by 10News, one of the city's newest parking lots for those individuals is going largely unused.Police recommend residents report non-emergency issues on the city's Get It Done mobile app. But if it is an emergency, residents are encouraged to call the police. 2190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – On Friday, the president of San Diego's Christian Youth Theater (CYT) held a press conference addressing this week's claims by several former students that they experienced sexual misconduct or sexual abuse by former teachers.CYT President Janie Russell Cox said the San Diego branch will remain dark until further notice as they investigate these abuse claims. “We are fully committed to the safety of every single child and we are grieving for every single individual whom we love and we care so deeply for. We apologize. [We] love you,” Cox added. The El Cajon-based program was founded 40 years ago and is for students ranging from 4 years old to 18 years old. CYT claims to be the largest youth theater group in the country with branches nationwide.Artist Brian Justin Crum, who went on to become a finalist on America's Got Talent, told ABC10 News on Friday that when he was 13 years old, his former CYT teacher invited him to a gay pride event. “I remember him questioning my sexuality and saying basically, like, you should come to this thing and see what you think and see how you feel when you're there and we can go together. I'll take you,” Crum said. “It was creepy. It felt inappropriate.”Crum said he was not assaulted but boundaries were crossed. “There was definitely a culture there where the teachers and the students were too close,” he added. On Tuesday, attorney Jessica Pride told ABC10 News that she's representing a former student who claims to have been sexually abused and several other former students have been contacting the law firm. “I think over the next couple of weeks as things unfold, you're going to see that this was just rampant at CYT and that they didn't do anything to protect these children,” said Pride. When asked Friday about whether staff ignored complaints from former students against former teachers, Cox replied, “I can't answer that. I don't have enough knowledge to know what decisions were made at that time and that's part of our investigation to find out.”Cox told reporters that CYT is starting a diversity committee and looking at doing restructuring to diminish favoritism, nepotism, and discrimination. She said CYT is committed to transparency.San Diego Police told ABC10 News Tuesday that its Sex Crimes Unit is conducting an investigation in which there is an association with CYT.An advocate for several of the alleged victims is asking for any other possible victims to come forward. Loxie Gant can be reached at Loxie@forbelleconsulting.com or 858-382-5694.CYT is also asking for alleged victims to contact them. Cox can be reached at Janie@cyt.org. 2640
