BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Eight Conference of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification (CCPPNR) came to an end Thursday, re-electing senior leader Jia Qinglin the council's chairman.     Jia is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).     He attended the closing session and congratulated its success on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, saying facts indicate that the council has become a major link between the mainland and overseas Chinese, and a bridge between Chinese compatriots living on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.     He highlighted the role of the CPC in the great changes of New China in the past 60 years, stressing, "the Chinese nation will definitely play an even more splendid movement in the process of its great rejuvenation." PARIS, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese delegation of human rights researchers on Friday had a detailed exchange of views on human rights issues with its French hosts during a four-day visit.     The delegation, led by Luo Haocai, vice chairman of the 10th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, provided a broad introduction to the great progress the People's Republic of China had achieved on human rights since its founding 60 years ago, especially over the 30-year period since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policy.     The delegation expounded China's views and positions on human rights, and expressed its willingness to further promote exchanges and cooperation on human rights between the two countries.     During a meeting with Michel Forst, secretary general of the National Consultative Commission of Human Rights in France, Luo, also president of the China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS), said human rights exchanges between China and France were to be deepened and extended as the two countries' friendship developed. The two sides could promote mutual understanding and broaden common ground in the communication process to better contribute to the world's human rights cause and world harmony.     Forst lauded China's human rights progress made concurrently with remarkable economic achievements, and said he was impressed by the universality and effectiveness of the work of the CSHRS.     Forst said he believed China would have much more influence in international human rights affairs along with the further promotion of its international status.     When talking with Pierre Bercis, president of New Human Rights League, Luo said China's theory and opinion of human rights was based on the principles of international human rights combined with China's own situation.     China stressed the unification of the universality and speciality of human rights, emphasized the right of survival and the right of development as the two basic human rights, encouraged equal communication and cooperation on international human rights, and opposed confrontation on human rights issues, Luo said. Pierre Bercis agreed with Luo's opinion.     While meeting Francis Verillaud, deputy president of Institute of political sciences of Paris, Luo hoped Chinese and French universities could strengthen exchanges and cooperation on human rights research, especially on human rights law, as a comprehensive law was the basis of human rights protection.     After the visit to France, the Chinese delegation will visit Belgium, the EU headquarters and Iceland.

MONROVIA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhou Yuxiao has said his country is a responsible and faithful member of the United Nations and it respects the resolutions adopted by the world body.     In a weekend interview with Xinhua, Ambassador Zhou expressed his confidence that the Chinese peacekeepers serving within the United Nations Mission in Liberia would remain in the country up to 2011 when the Liberians would go to polls to elect a new president.     The ambassador said the Chinese peacekeepers here in Liberia are working under the leadership and guidance of the UN mission.     "As far as I know, the United Nations has decided that UNMIL (the United Nations Mission in Liberia) will stay in Liberia until 2011, and supporting Liberian general election is part of UNMIL mandate."     Ambassador Zhou said there could be a small reduction in the size of the Chinese peacekeeping forces in the country, but the troops would remain in Liberia to provide the needed support up to2011 under the UN Mission.     "As part of the UN Peacekeeping force, the Chinese peacekeepers will certainly play its role in supporting the next elections," he said.     The current Chinese peacekeepers are drawn up in three contingents namely medical, transportation and engineering. He said during the Liberian forthcoming elections, obviously the electoral authority will need transportation support which the Chinese unit can assist with.     Ambassador Zhou said although China does not have a combat troop in the mission, but he is confident that the three contingents can play a positive role in the peacekeeping efforts as well as in supporting the forthcoming elections.     "China has always supported the UN endeavors in maintaining peace and stability in Liberia and my view is that the peacekeeping operation in Liberia has so far been successful and we should allow it to stay so," he added.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The G20 summit of world leaders in Pittsburgh this September should help promote the world economic recovery, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei recently.     During the first coordinating meeting, which kicked off on Thursday, the participanting countries agreed that they should strengthen the coordination and cooperation to help the summit achieve positive and pragmatic outcomes.     The Pittsburgh Summit should continue to promote all sides to strengthen the coordination of their macro economic policies and to boost the world economic recovery, said He during the two-day meeting.     He also urged the upcoming summit to implement actively the outcomes of the G20 London Summit, to speed up the reforms of the international financial institutions, and to expand the representations of the emerging and developing countries.     China hopes the summit will pay more attention to the development issue and to boost the world economy to achieve long-term and sustained growth by promoting common development, said He.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday evening when he met the heads of 10 major media organizations attending the World Media Summit in Beijing.     The Chinese government has been promoting media development and supporting Chinese media in enhancing exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts in news, human resources, information technologies and business development, he said.
