SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some former students of Brightwood College finally have something to celebrate after their school shut down earlier this month.Town & Country San Diego Mission Valley, where the graduation was scheduled to held, will now host the ceremony free of charge.Karlene Carpenter is one of those students looking forward to the graduation ceremony. She spent countless hours with her classmates, studying and preparing for the next phase of their lives. "The curiculum was amazing. I got the best education there," Carpenter said.RELATED: Brightwood College announces sudden closure amid accreditation, financial turmoilBrightwood suddenly shut down, citing accreditation and financial problems. This happened a few days before Carpenter was scheduled to finish the program. Teachers stepped in to help. Carpenter said some clinical instructors worked for free to help them finish. "My last term was straight A's," Carpenter said. At first, it looked like the graduation ceremony scheduled for January 18th at Town & Country San Diego in Mission Valley was not going to happen since the school was out of business."We still had the date booked, but there was no way to pay for it," Carpenter said. "I went to school a little later in life. You want to walk across that stage, you want to wear your cap and gown, you want to participate in the pinning ceremony inducting you into nursing."Then came a little holiday cheer thanks to Santa's helpers, in the form of Town & Country staff. "We have extended to them a complimentary graduation. Everyone in their families can see them and just really enjoy what they worked so hard for," said Susan Penman, director of sales and marketing at the facility. From stressful classes to a sudden college shutdown, it was the news Carpenter was more than happy to hear. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My entire class and all of these students are just elated. It was basically a Christmas miracle," she said. 1988

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - SANDAG's Board of Directors passed the 3.4 million budget at their meeting on Friday The proposal includes the largest transportation projects in the county. The budget will used between now and the end of the 2025 Fiscal Year. The vote passed 11 (yes) - 7 (no) - 1 (abstain). As part of SANDAG's proposed "Five Big Moves" initiative to modernize transportation in the city, the money will be put towards "Complete Corridor" projects.RELATED: SANDAG leaders unveil bold vision for future of public transit in San DiegoAccording to a budget proposal released this week, the majority of the money will go towards transit and public transportation-based projects. However, Poway Mayor and SANDAG chair, Steve Vaus presented a revised budget with co-author, Escondido mayor, Paul McNamara. Some of the items in the budget include million for new trolley cars on the Blue Line, .8 million to purchase two new coaster trains for the North County Transit District, and million for preliminary designs on a central mobility hub. The Vaus-McNamara budget pulled the million slated to convert HOV lanes on the 5 North to express lanes, to road expansion projects in North County. million will be allocated to environmental studies and designs for new HOV lanes along SR78 between I-5 and I-15. million will be used to add lanes for SR 52, and the notoriously dangerous state route 67. "The transit plan for SANDAG is to get 10% of the people using transit, which leaves 90% of the rest of us all on roads," says County Supervisor and SANDAG Board Member Jim Desmond. "We need to have roads as well."RELATED: County Supervisors speak out against SANDAG mass transit planOne sticking point is how to use money from the TransNet Tax. Voters approved it in 2004 as a way to fund freeway projects. The current budget has 0 million of money from the tax. The rest comes from other federal, state and local funds.SANDAG Director Hasan Ikhrata defends his decision to emphasize transit. He says the County needs to hit specific benchmarks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to get more funding."If we are to sustain ourselves and preserve our quality of life, we need to provide our residents with an alternative," he says. "We can't build our way out of congestion. I think this will put the agency in legal jeopardy.""Freeway widenings are terrible for the environment. Terrible for public health and out right wrong," one man said on the podium. "We need public transportation systems that work for us," said a woman representing the Sierra Club.San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez, who is also a member of the SANDAG Board, agrees. In a statement to 10News, Gomez said, "We need to create a transportation system that offers residents a real choice in how they move throughout their day.RELATED: Ramona residents worry about future of SR 67 amid SANDAG's new plan"A successful regional transportation system is efficient, affordable, and meets the state-mandated reductions in vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions." 3082

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's LGBT community center, The Center, says it will not allow armed, uniformed officers at its facility or events. The announcement comes less than a week after San Diego Pride said it would not allow law enforcement to participate in the parade or events. The Center's Board of Directors voted that starting Tuesday, armed, uniformed law enforcement officers will not be allowed at the facility or future events unless its a last resort or true emergency, according to CEO Cara Dessert.RELATED: San Diego Pride: No law enforcement agency contingents in Parade, Festival"This is not about good or bad individual law enforcement officers, but rather a systemic problem in law enforcement that devalues Black lives and creates an environment in which our Black community does not feel welcomed, and in fact strikes fear and trauma," Dessert wrote, in part. Read Dessert's full statement here.Dessert added that The Center will, "continue to engage in dialogue over the coming weeks with our community, including our Black LGBTQ community leaders as to how to better serve the Black community, and what that means for our relationship with local law enforcement."In a statement to 10News, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said he was extremely disappointed with the news."I am extremely disappointed with the decision made by the leadership of the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Banning people because of their profession and their desire to serve the community is counter to the message of inclusion they have always stood for. The decision to exclude uniformed police officers should be reconsidered," Nisleit wrote.Last week, San Diego Pride officials asked Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the city to support a 4-step action plan on how law enforcement can support Pride. The statements come amid a nationwide push for police reform and reassessment on how departments are funded in the wake of the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day. 1996
