POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — Poway will host two simultaneous Fourth of July fireworks shows this summer in order to encourage social distancing while continuing the tradition.Fireworks will launch from both Poway High School and Sportsplex in South Poway Business Park at 9 p.m. on July 4, the city says."Keeping these celebrations going is more important than ever," said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. "They will bring people together in spirit and shine a little bit of light into the darkness we've experienced due to the pandemic, all while we celebrate our nation's founding."The two locations will allow for a nearly 360-degree view of fireworks from the Sportsplex while allowing those who traditionally view the show near the high school to continue doing so.However, there won't be any viewing allowed at Poway High School's football field due to public health orders. Instead, anyone who wants to view the show can purchase a parking pass to watch from across the street at Lake Poway. City officials say a map of the best viewing locations and more information will be posted online here soon.Anyone who heads out to view the shows is reminded to observe social distancing from groups that are not from the same household and wear facial coverings around non-household members. 1285

President Donald Trump on Thursday presented the Medal of Honor to Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Britt Slabinski, recalling the Navy SEAL's heroism in a 2002 combat mission during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan when his teammate was thrown out of a helicopter."Today we induct a new name into the world's most exclusive gathering of heroes," Trump said as he introduced Slabinski.Under Slabinski's leadership, the team returned to the enemy stronghold on a "steep, icy mountain" to rescue their teammate."Britt and his team didn't even hesitate for a moment ... they went back to that mountain ... they jumped out onto a furious onslaught of machine gun fire ... and charged uphill toward the enemy," Trump said.In the face of dangerous air fire and a "treacherous descent," Slabinski "tended to the wounded and coordinated their escape."Seven of the men who fought with Slabinski were in attendance Thursday, and Trump recognized each of them for their "unbelievable acts of bravery." (KGTV) -- A local business and organization are coming together to take steps toward better protecting Alzheimer patients by providing free gun locks.Alzheimer’s San Diego and Poway Weapons and Gear have started the first of its kind program regarding what to do when it’s time to lock up your guns.Eugenia Welch is the President of Alzheimer’s San Diego and spoke to 10News. "As we were working further through this program, there was an incident locally, a gentleman shot his daughter because he didn’t recognize her as a daughter he thought she was an intruder. Luckily she’s fine but that could have been a really bad situation," she said. When families are helping their loved ones who have been diagnosed, they often forget about the guns in the home and how dangerous they could be. "If someone is retired military or retired police officer, they’ve probably had guns in their home their whole life and didn’t even think about it” Welch says.This program gives free gun locks to families. It started over the summer and so far they have given out 100 locks.Poway Weapons and Gear has donated 500 locks and tells 10News they will continue to donate as need grows.The program hits close to home for the business because the owner’s grandmother was also diagnosed with the disease.With the locks on guns they become completely unusable, preventing the cylinder from going back in with the rounds to allow the gun to be fired.While the ideal situation is for the guns to be completely removed, the organization says this is the next best option. 1610

President Donald Trump claimed that up to 15,000 US troops could be sent to the border to deal with the group of migrants heading toward the US through Mexico."As far as the caravan is concerned our military is out, we have about 5,000-8 (thousand), we'll go up to anywhere between 10 (thousand) and 15,000 military personnel on top of border patrol, ICE and everybody else on the border," Trump told reporters Wednesday.The Pentagon has already announced 5,200 active duty troops are being sent to the border and has identified an additional 2,000 that could go. There are currently 2,100 National Guardsmen on duty at the border and an additional 2,000 could be called upon to go if needed.Shortly after Trump spoke, the Pentagon released a statement saying "The number of troops deployed will change each day as military forces flow into the operating area, but the initial estimate is that the DOD will have more than 7,000 troops supporting DHS across California, Arizona and Texas."The migrants, who are over 800 miles away from the US, are weeks away from arriving at the border where many reportedly plan to seek asylum.Trump also added that he is thinking "very seriously" and "immediately" of stopping aid to countries where people in the group of migrants are coming from."Nobody's coming in. We're not allowing people to come in," Trump said. "If you look at what happened in Mexico two days ago with the roughness of these people in the second caravan that's been forming, and also frankly in the first caravan, and now they have one forming in El Salvador. ...
