SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University study abroad student and a University of San Diego graduate student have both tested positive for the coronavirus, the universities announced Friday. The SDSU student was studying abroad in Italy and recently returned home to the United States. The student is self-isolating at his home outside of San Diego County, the university said in a release. They added that the student visited two off campus offices for a brief period of time, and did not attend any classes."Due to the student's limited contact with the campus, we consider that the risk to the greater SDSU campus community is low," said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.A graduate student at the University of San Diego also tested positive for the virus, the university said Friday in a tweet. They say the student lives off-campus. 875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A senior "hero" leapt into action when she saw a man snatching a neighbor's package in the La Jolla area.On a quiet afternoon last week, Gillian Ackland was in her living room when she saw an unfamiliar white car park right in her cul-de-sac off Colima Street in Bird Rock."It felt kind of strange," said Ackland.Next door was a big package sitting outside her neighbor's door.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"The car suddenly starts backing up diagonally. I realize he's going for the package, and I run out the front door, saw him with the package and ran to his side of the car," said Ackland. Her neighbor's Ring camera captured it all. In the video, a man is seen walking up to the door, grabbing the big package and a smaller one. As he starts running to his car, so does Ackland, who yells, "That's not yours!" three times. He shoves the package in the back seat, but the door didn't fully close."There was adrenaline going," said Ackland.Ackland sensed her chance."I knew I had a few seconds and I could do something - and I did it," said Ackland. She opened the back door and tried to pull the package out. The package starts to fall out, but not far enough, as the car drives off. Ackland has no regrets."The injustice of all kept me going. I just felt it's not right, and I just thought I could get the package away from him," said Ackland.Another neighbor took a photo of the car showing an Uber sticker on the front windshield. Inside the package was a side table. She says the neighbor missing the package thanked her profusely. He told 10News she is a "superhero neighbor.""It's actually a little embarrassing," said Ackland. The video was shared on the "Neighbors by Ring" app."It's important that neighbors look out for each other. Some might call me crazy, but I think I'm adventurous. I've led an adventurous life and that's who I am," said Ackland.A police report was filed. 10News reached out to Uber and sent them the images of the driver and car, but have yet to hear back. 2049
