NEW YORK (AP) — Johnny Depp has exited the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise following his failed libel case against The Sun tabloid newspaper for a 2018 article that labeled him a "wife-beater." Depp said Friday in a letter posted on Instagram that he would depart the role of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald after the studio requested his resignation. Depp said his announcement came "in light of recent events." On Monday, a U.K. judge ruled that an April 2018 article in the British tabloid, which accused him of assaulting his then-wife and fellow actor Amber Heard, was not libelous.Warner Bros. confirmed Depp's departure and said the role will be recast. "We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date," the studio said in a statement. The third "Fantastic Beasts" film is currently in production. 812

News helicopters in Philadelphia captured demonstrations turning into lawlessness as several people were seen breaking into businesses Tuesday evening.Philadelphia Police said that a crowd of approximately 1,000 people were looting a business in Philadelphia on Tuesday. The unrest began on Monday after Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by officers in Philadelphia. Spokesperson Tanya Little of the Philadelphia Police said that Wallace was ordered to drop a knife before being shot by officers. The incident was captured on video from a bystander, and Little confirmed that two of the officers were wearing body worn cameras. Whether that video will be publicly released will be determined in the coming days.Video of the incident showed officers pointing a weapon at Wallace. After trying to back away from Wallace, officers then fired at him.Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that a full investigation of what transpired is underway.Shaka Johnson, an attorney representing the Wallace family, told the Inquirer that family called for an ambulance and not officers. Johnson said that Wallace's pregnant wife told officers that Wallace had a bipolar condition. 1206

NEW YORK (AP) — NFL end zones will be inscribed this season with two slogans: "It Takes All Of Us" on one end line, "End Racism" on the other. As part of its social justice awareness initiatives, the NFL also will allow similar visuals on helmets and caps.Previously announced were decals on the back of helmets, or patches on team caps, displaying names or phrases to honor victims of racism and/or police brutality. Now, a T-shirt designed by NFL Players Association executive committee member Michael Thomas, a safety with the Houston Texans, can be worn in warmups. The shirts will say “Injustice against one of us is injustice against all of us,” on the front and the back will read: “End racism,” The Associated Press reported. As previously reported, the league is reportedly planning to feature the song "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," traditionally known as the Black national anthem, during the pregame of Week 1 games. 930

NEW YORK CITY, NY -- New York Police Department Deputy Inspector Stewart Loo says he's going to do something about hate crimes targeting Asian Americans in the city.He says it's close to his heart."This hit home for me because I have friends, families who are legitimately afraid to go outside because they have feared for their safety.”The new task force was introduced Tuesday by Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison."This task force has been built and will continue to build trust and understanding between the NYPD and Asian New Yorkers,” he said. The task force was put together in response to a rise in hate crime attacks on the Asian community amid the coronavirus pandemic. A result of the harsh rhetoric surrounding the virus, which is believed to have originated in Wuhan, China, before spreading around the globe. Some Asian New Yorkers bore the violent backlash of rhetoric gone wrong. There have been 21 attacks in the city since March."Asian New Yorkers were attacked on trans, buses, [in] parks, restaurants and walking in their own neighborhoods,” said Harrison. He praised the hate crimes task force for clearing about 17 arrests but admitted the reluctance on the part of some victims to follow up with the active investigations due to language barriers, cultural differences, or even fear of the police. This story was first reported by Craig Treadway at WPIX in New York. 1395
