As Baby Boomers age, and start losing loved ones, loneliness can take its toll.The issue is becoming such a concern some national organizations are stepping in.“This was the one thing I said when I retire, I want to do Meals on Wheels,” says volunteer Donna Reuss.Reuss has been volunteering for the organization Meals on Wheels for six years. She not only brings seniors a free meal, but she’s often the only person they really interact with for weeks at a time.“One of the things that really surprised me when I first started this was how many seniors live alone,” Reuss says.Loneliness can have a big impact on their health. Research shows that lacking social connections can be as harmful to someone’s health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.“It's a much bigger problem I think than people realize,” says Mary Lee Anderson, with Senior Services of Alexandria.Anderson’s nonprofit organization helps deliver food for Meals on Wheels. She’s helping with a new pilot project that lets volunteers delivering meals use a cell phone app to report any changes in behavior or concerns they notice while visiting with a senior.“It lets our volunteers, if they notice a problem, report it right on their phone,” she explains. “That information is sent back to us at the office and we can then contact the individual who is responsible, a family member or their city social worker if they don't have a close family member.”The pilot program is currently being tested in 10 cities across the country, and it’s expected to expand to another 50 cities early next year. 1619

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- One former police officer has been charged in the Breonna Taylor case, but that doesn't mean it's the end of investigations.People across the country have been following the case of Taylor's death, and many wanted to see the officers involved face criminal charges. Demonstrations were held Wednesday night in Louisville and other cities after it was announced former Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Brett Hankison's charges of wanton endangerment are not directly related to Taylor's death. Additionally, two officers who fired shots the night Taylor was killed will not face criminal charges. They do still face another investigation, though.The Courier-Journal reports that the Louisville police department is conducting a Professional Standards Unit investigation to determine whether they and four other officers violated police policy or rules during the raid. The results of this internal review could lead to disciplinary action.Also, the FBI is conducting an investigation that could result in civil rights violations.Governor Andy Beshear is calling for the details of the state's investigation to be posted online by Attorney General Daniel Cameron."I trust Kentuckians. They deserve to see the facts for themselves, and I believe that the ability to process those facts helps everybody," said Beshear.Taylor's case is one of many that became a focus in the conversation about police reform. Attorney General Cameron says he'll form a task force to look at Kentucky's search warrants' policies. Maryland-based vaccine developer, Novavax, has received .6 billion from the federal government to complete late-stage clinical development; set up large-scale manufacturing; and deliver 100 million doses of NVX?CoV2373, its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, as early as late 2020.This is the largest vaccine deal to date with the Trump administration as part of their Operation Warp Speed, which is focused on making a COVID-19 vaccine and treatments available as quickly as possible.Novavax has not brought any of their developed vaccines to market. According to information on their website, they have developed several vaccines for infectious diseases, however they are all in various stages of development or clinical trials. These include vaccines for the seasonal flu and RSV. Other vaccines created by Novavax are not actively being developed or studied at this time, including ones for Ebola, MERS, and SARS.According to a statement from Novavax, the agreement with the federal government includes the company demonstrating being able to rapidly get manufacturing and large-scale production of the vaccine going once approved. Novavax hopes to conduct their late-stage clinical study with 30,000 subjects in fall 2020.An early-stage clinical study took place in Australia in May on 130 participants.
