It's played on a badminton-size court with a modified tennis net, using a plastic ball with holes.RELATED: WrestleMania to feature women's main event for first time everAnd it can be played indoors or outdoors."We see this as a ‘rallying point’ to promote the sport throughout the U.S. on the local level," USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) Executive Director Justin Maloof says. "The USAPA has built up a nationwide network of 1,700 dedicated ‘Pickleball Ambassadors,’ and designating April as National Pickleball Month will help them to further get the word out about all the great benefits pickleball can provide not just to individuals of all ages, but also to communities."The "national month" designation hopes to boost more interest in the sport. (KGTV) — The 18-year-old girl who pushed her friend off a 60-foot bridge into a Washington state river has been charged with one count of reckless endangerment.Prosecutors filed the charge against Taylor Smith, saying the teen engaged in conduct which created a substantial risk of death and resulted in serious physical injury to Jordan Holgerson," according to ABC News.Reckless endangerment is a gross misdemeanor in Washington state and punishable by up to a year in jail and a maximum fine of ,000.Smith pushed Holgerson off the bridge over the Lewis River at Moulton Falls Regional Park near Vancouver, Wash., on Aug. 7.The fall left Holgerson, 16, with six broken ribs, a punctured lung, and air bubbles in her chest, officials said.Footage showing the fall was captured on cell phone video and soon went viral. A nearby surveillance camera also caught Smith pushing Holgerson over. The teens have given conflicting reports of what led up to the fall.Smith has told authorities that she was trying to help her Holgerson overcome the fear of jumping and that she didn't mean to cause harm. Holgerson, however, said she didn't want to be pushed off and she was trying to count down. 1216

90-year-old Margaret Keenan of the United Kingdom became the first person to receive an initial dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday — a major landmark and something that officials are calling a "turning point" in the pandemic.Keenan, a retired store clerk, was the first in line at University Hospital in Coventry, England, to receive her first dose of a vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech. She turns 91 next week."It's the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the New Year after being on my own for most of the year," she said, according to a statement released by the UK's National Health Service (NHS).According to CNN, the first shot was administered by nurse May Parsons."The last few months have been tough for all of us working in the NHS, but now it feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel," Parsons said, according to CNN.CNN and ABC News both report that the second person to receive the vaccine was an 81-year-old man named William Shakespeare, who hails from the same county where the famous playwright was born.England was the first Western country to approve Pfizer's vaccine for emergency use. The U.S. and the European Union are expected to grant their approval to the Pfizer vaccine in the coming days.Russia was the first country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine in August. However, the vaccine, dubbed "Sputnik V," was only tested on a few dozen people, and its rollout has been marked by public distrust and production issues.Pfizer's vaccine requires two shots, which need to be taken 28 days apart, which means Keenan, Shakespeare, and all others injected on Tuesday will need to return for another shot next month to reach full inoculation. The U.S. is also expected to approve a vaccine candidate made by Moderna in the coming days as well. U.S. health officials have said they hope to distribute initial doses of the vaccine to 20 million people across the country by the month's end.As in England, initial doses of COVID-19 in the U.S. are being reserved for older people in long-term care facilities healthcare workers. U.S. health officials believe vaccines will be widely available in the spring. 2249

(KGTV) — Thousands of passengers remained stranded on a cruise ship off the San Francisco coastline Saturday, after 21 people aboard tested positive for the new coronavirus this week. The Grand Princess cruise ship said they are awaiting direction from state and local health officials about where they will be allowed to port. Saturday, a critically ill guest and their travel companion were medically transported to shore from the ship by a U.S. Coast Guard cutter for treatment unrelated to coronavirus.Saturday, the ship was about 50 miles off the coast and the Bay Area.RELATED COVERAGE:Handful of San Diego conferences cancel over coronavirus worriesSan Diego event organizers temper coronavirus fearsSan Diego economy could take a hit if cruises are canceled"The safety, health and well-being of our guests and crew is always our top priority, and we continue to make every effort to ensure they are safe and comfortable while they remain onboard," Princess Cruises said in a statement. The ship was identified as a breeding ground for a cluster of coronavirus cases on a previous trip. A passenger who is believed to have been infected while aboard the ship in February was the first California death due to the virus.Gov. Gavin Newsom has previously said officials will work to identify all potential COVID-19 patients aboard before deciding how to bring the ship to shore.Late Friday, gloves and face masks were delivered to the ship by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. Earlier the same day, the National Guard delivered testing kits and supplies. In the U.S., 11 people have died from the virus and at least 400 cases have been reported. Many of the U.S. deaths so far have occurred in Washington state. 1717
