SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Democratic Party Chairman Eric Bauman was accused of inappropriate behavior on a campaign bus days before the Nov. 6 election, a Democratic official said Tuesday, a day after Bauman took a leave of absence.Bauman was among those aboard a bus during a statewide get-out-the-vote tour. Two young women on the bus reported alcohol was consumed and inappropriate sex talk occurred on Nov. 1, said David Campos, chairman of the San Francisco Democratic Party. The bus was scheduled to arrive in San Francisco the next day at an event with U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Her campaign team learned of the incidents aboard the bus and told state party officials that Bauman and the bus should stay away, Campos said.It appeared Bauman engaged in the misbehavior and did not intervene to stop others from acting inappropriately, Campos said.RELATED: Top California Democrat on leave amid sex misconduct inquiry"We felt, and I felt, it was important for us, given we had serious credible allegations, not to have Chair Bauman attend this get-out-the-vote event in San Francisco," said Campos, who first shared details of the allegations with the Bay Area Reporter, a publication serving the LGBT community. Bauman is the party's first openly gay chairman.Allegations of misbehavior by Bauman first surfaced last week in a letter by party Vice Chairman Daraka Larimore-Hall. It appeared on social media and accused Bauman of sexual harassment and assault against unidentified accusers. On Saturday, Bauman acknowledged the party had started an investigation and on Monday he announced he was taking a leave of absence. He provided no details on the allegations. Campos said he doesn't know if Larimore-Hall's letter relates to the alleged incident on the bus or something else, but he said he was not aware of any allegations of sexual assault on the bus."We did not hear anything about possible sexual assault," he said.Larimore-Hall did not respond to multiple emails and a phone message from The Associated Press Tuesday. Jorge Aguilar, executive director of Pelosi's campaign, and Bauman did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment. In a statement Monday announcing Bauman's leave, party spokesman Mike Roth said "Bauman believes this decision is the best way to ensure the independence and integrity of the process. The Party is confident that the procedures in place will allow for all parties to come forward freely and provide for a thorough and complete review."Alex Gallardo-Rooker, another party vice chair, is serving as acting chairwoman during the investigation. 2627

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Democratic Party is investigating allegations of sexual misconduct against chairman Eric Bauman.A party vice chairman, Daraka Larimore-Hall, brought the charges against Bauman last week on behalf of anonymous accusers and called for Bauman's resignation. Larimore-Hall alleged that Bauman sexually harassed and assaulted people during party functions.Larimore-Hall spoke to two accusers and a witness, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported."I take seriously any allegation brought forward by anyone who believes they have been caused pain," Bauman said Saturday in a statement announcing the investigation. "I look forward to putting these allegations behind us and moving forward as unified Democrats."An outside investigator is looking into the claims. Other California Democrats have already called for Bauman to be replaced, including U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna and the Orange County Young Democrats.A series of sexual misconduct allegations against lawmakers, lobbyists and others in politics rocked California's political world late last year, at the height of the #MeToo movement. Three Democratic men resigned as state lawmakers after investigators hired by the Legislature found they likely engaged in inappropriate behavior. In a letter to the party last week calling for Bauman's removal, Larimore-Hall said stories from Bauman's accusers illustrate a "clear and escalating pattern" of inappropriate behavior.Larimore-Hall did not respond to a request for comment Monday from The Associated Press.Bauman narrowly won the party chairmanship last year against Kimberly Ellis after a contentious battle between establishment Democrats and progressive activists.During that fight, Bauman said he was falsely targeted by rumors he engaged in inappropriate behavior with teenage boys. Bauman is the party's first openly gay chairman.Bauman called the rumors "despicable lies," and Ellis denounced them.Party officers can be removed from office by a vote of the executive board. Larimore-Hall's call for Bauman's removal still has several steps to clear before reaching a vote. 2122

Robot janitors are already at Walmart, so they are now making their way to Sam's Club.According to a press release by Brain Corp, which is the company making the robot floor scrubbers, Sam's Club will put 372 of them into its stores by this fall.In 2018, Walmart placed the Auto-C – Autonomous Cleaner into 78 Walmart stores.Walmart, which owns Sam's, announced last year it would bring autonomous floor scrubbers to more than 1,800 of its stores by next February, CNN reported. The company says that's so employees can help customers instead of mopping floors."After an associate preps the area, this machine can be programmed to travel throughout the open parts of the store, leaving behind a clean, polished floor," Walmart said in a press release. "Auto-C provides a cleaner shopping experience for our customers, and it frees up our associates to serve them better." 878

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A rookie Sacramento police officer was shot during a domestic violence call and lay wounded for about 45 minutes as the gunman kept officers at bay with bursts of fire, authorities said Thursday. She was finally rescued with an armored vehicle but died at a hospital."We are devastated," Deputy Chief Dave Peletta said. "There are no words to convey the depth of sadness we feel or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, brave officer."Officer Tara O'Sullivan, 26, was shot Wednesday evening while helping a woman collect her belongings to leave her home. As officers swarmed the area, the gunman continued firing in a standoff that lasted about eight hours before he surrendered.Stephen Nasta, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former inspector with the New York Police Department, said taking 45 minutes to reach a wounded officer is "unacceptable."If officers couldn't immediately get an armored police vehicle to the scene, he said, they should have commandeered an armored bank vehicle, bus or heavy construction equipment."If there's somebody shot, lying on the ground, you have to do everything you can," Nasta said.If no such vehicle was available, he said he would expect police to use a diversionary tactic such as firing at the home, setting off smoke grenades or breaking a door or window in another part of the home to distract the gunman as other officers rescued the wounded comrade. Police said five other officers fired their weapons during the incident.Police identified the suspect as Adel Sambrano Ramos, 45, of Sacramento. His younger brother, Orlando Ramos, told The Associated Press that Adel Ramos is estranged from his family and has a long record that includes convictions for driving under the influence, drug use and domestic violence."It's the drugs, it's always been the drugs," Orlando Ramos said. "If he goes to prison for the rest of his life, I could care less."I'm a lot more heartbroken for seeing the pain in my mother and for the police officer and her family than I am for him going to prison," he said.He said he was sorry the shooting occurred and sent his condolences to the officer's family.O'Sullivan graduated from the police academy in December and was working with a training officer. She was expected to be on her own in a couple of weeks, Peletta said. She and other officers arrived at the home at 5:41 p.m. A half-hour later the first shots were fired, and O'Sullivan was hit, authorities said. The gunman continued firing a rifle-type weapon. At 6:54 p.m., additional officers responded with an armored vehicle to rescue O'Sullivan."Our officers maintained cover in safe positions until we were able to get an armored vehicle in the area," Sgt. Vance Chandler said.Five minutes later, O'Sullivan was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where she died. The woman she was helping was not hurt. Orlando Ramos said she was Adel Ramos' girlfriend.O'Sullivan grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated last year from Sacramento State University with a degree in child development.Mayor Darrell Steinberg said on Facebook that O'Sullivan was in the first graduating class of a groundbreaking program at Sacramento State that "emphasizes the importance of inclusion and cultural competence for future law enforcement leaders — of which Tara undoubtedly would have been."___Rodriguez reported from San Francisco.
