KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Missouri Police officer shot a pit bull Friday afternoon after the dog bit a USPS mail carrier.Officers and Animal Control responded around 4:30 p.m. local timeFriday to the 1500 block of NE 79th Street on the call.According to police notes, they located two “large, aggressive pit bull dogs” on the scene. While the animal control officer attempted to capture the dogs, one of them charged toward the officer, prompting the officer to open fire on the dog, striking it in the shoulder. The second dog ran away back to the residence it had escaped from where it was eventually captured.A few minutes after being shot, the dog jumped up and ran around a house where animal control captured it.During the course of the investigation, officers spoke with the owner of the two dogs. The owner was “belligerent” and did not want to accept responsibility for the dogs running loose in the neighborhood, according to police.  977

Jo Grayson said she was alarmed when her son, Thatcher, came home from his middle school covered in cuts and bruises.Earlier in the day, Thatcher's teacher texted Grayson to alert her to an incident involving him. But it did nothing to prepare Grayson for what she saw hours later when Thatcher came home and she discovered the marks on his body. After she obtained surveillance video that explained the marks, she became appalled. The footage shows Thatcher, who is autistic and mostly nonverbal, being dragged down a school hallway by his teacher and the school nurse."I just don't understand how someone can do this to a child, let alone to a person with disabilities," Grayson told CNN. "I want the school district to take action and not just install cameras in every room of each school, but also train their staff accordingly so they know how to handle children with disabilities, or rough situations with children like Thatcher." 943

Joe Biden will meet with top Democratic lawmakers on Friday, his first meeting with Congressional leadership since his projected win in the 2020 election.Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris will meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer at Biden's transition headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. The four will meet in private and may speak to the media afterward. The incoming Biden administration will face several challenges after his inauguration, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. Unemployment is once again on the rise as cases across the country spike, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are under immense pressure to strike a deal on a stimulus package — something they have been unable to do since March.Biden is also days away from unveiling his picks for cabinet positions, which require Senate confirmation. Depending on the outcome of two January runoff elections in Georgia, Biden may face an uphill battle in seating his cabinet, as Republicans may control the chamber. The president-elect is also facing resistance from President Donald Trump, who has not yet begun the transition process and is in the midst of an unprecedented push to overturn the results of the election. By failing to concede to Biden, Trump has held up funds that could be used for hiring and information that could aid his first few months on the job.The meeting comes days after Pelosi was elected to another term as Speaker by fellow House Democrats. 1500

JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) — Two San Diego breweries are coming together to help veterans and first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.Julian's Nickel Beer Co. collaborated with San Diego's Bitter Brothers Brewing Co. to create Warrior Contribution Beer, a 5%, golden ale described as, "a beer that everyone could enjoy and that would be perfect for our warm San Diego days," Nickel Beer Co. owner, Tom Nickel, says. All of the beer's proceeds will be donated to Julian's Inner North Star PTSD Retreat Center to help provide no-cost retreats to veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD.RELATED: Museum of Beer planned to open in San Diego's East Village next yearNickel says the beer started as a fundraiser idea, before it snowballed into a year-round offering."Then the thought grew into possibly brewing a special beer to release around San Diego for June, which is PTSD Awareness Month. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Inside Super Food and Brew, it’s been a brutal few months of business, ever since the coronavirus pandemic began.“We did have to reduce the staff quite a bit,” said Al Penttila, Super Food and Brew’s general manager. “Basically, it was a struggle for them for the beginning of it.”Surviving mainly on take-out and delivery orders, news that the Republican National Convention would be coming to Jacksonville came as a welcome relief.“The arena is about three blocks from here so we're hoping and we're expecting a lot of foot traffic,” Penttila said. The RNC estimates about 50,000 people will make their way to Jacksonville for the convention and potentially bring in more than 0 million to the local economy. Yet, there are some concerns about what else it might bring, one of which revolves around the potential for protests during the convention.“I hope it doesn't get out of hand,” Penttila said. “I know they're taking precautions.”The city’s Republican mayor said there will be plenty of security in place.“Peaceful protests are a right and here in Jacksonville we honor and respect that right,” said Mayor Lenny Curry, R-Jacksonville. “There will be additional resources in our city that will be subsidized by the federal government.”Then, there’s the ever-lurking specter of COVID-19. This week, Florida saw its biggest one-day jump in cases: more than 2,800.“A convention is a super spreader event and the possibilities, if you're a gambling person, the possibilities, the odds will be in your favor that you could possibly be exposed,” said Dr. Doreen Perez, with the University of North Florida’s Brooks College of Health. She said, without precautions, conventions of any kind can potentially spread the coronavirus to many people, who could end up taking it home to their communities.“Especially when they're coming from different all points of the nation,” Dr. Perez said. Her advice for attendees: social distance, wash your hands and wear a mask.“It's been proven that it works,” she said.Back at Super Food and Brew, there is little fear and a lot of hope.“I think the economic benefit of the RNC coming here will outweigh anything,” Penttila said.It is something the city will know one way or another by the last week of August. The RNC is set to take place in Jacksonville from August 24-27. 2341
