BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who headed Monday to the typhoon-hit regions in Fujian and Zhejiang, warned Tuesday that the country faces grim tasks of fighting secondary disasters as a result of Typhoon Morakot. Big floods are still likely to happen as heavy rainfall persists in the south and many rivers continued to maintain high water levels, he said.     More than 20 rivers reported water levels above flood-alarm lines in Zhejiang, Fujian and Anhui provinces. Rainfall brought by typhoon "Morakot", the 8th this year, has flooded the county seat of Cangnan    Hui asked relevant departments to strengthen monitoring of flooding and forecasts of other disasters, so as to relocate people as quickly as possible to minimize casualties.     Typhoon Morakot has left eight people dead and three missing on the Chinese mainland after a powerful landing in east China Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs Tuesday.     As of Tuesday afternoon, Morakot had moved into the Yellow Sea, and would gradually pose less threat to coastal provinces in eastern China.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Baosteel Group, China's largest steel maker, said Friday it has agreed to pay 285.6 million Australian dollars (240.7 million U.S. dollars) for a 15-percent stake in Australian miner Aquila Resources.     Baosteel will buy up to 43.95 million shares in Aquila at 6.5 Australian dollars a share.     The deal, which will make Baosteel the second-biggest shareholder in Aquila, is still to get approval from Australian and Chinese regulators.     The company executives valued the growth potential of Aquila's assets in the deal that is another major step in its overseas expansion, said a statement on Baosteel's website.     Baosteel established a joint venture with iron ore giant Rio Tinto in 2001 and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) in 2002 to secure iron ore imports.     In a press release, Aquila said the deal was "an important transaction in Baosteel's strategy to secure long-term supply of critical steel raw materials."     The strategic cooperation will "fast-track the development of Aquila's key steel raw materials projects including iron ore, coal, and manganese," said the statement.     Baosteel would possibly make further direct investment into a number of its projects and help it get low-cost financing from China for most of its major projects, including the strategic West Pilbara Iron Ore Project, said the Aquila statement.     It added that the state-owned Chinese steel mill had agreed not to hold more than 19.99 percent of Aquila before August 2010.     Shares in Aquila surged 9.16 percent, or 60 Australian cents, to 7.15 Australian dollars Friday.

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Salary increases for executives of state-owned enterprises (SOE) should be in line with those for employees, Hu Xiaoyi, China's Vice Minister of Human Resources and Social Security, said Tuesday.     Hu said that the government was formulating a document to regulate more effectively SOE executives' salary plans, and the document would be released in the near future.     "The disparity between executives' and employees' salary rises should not be alarmingly large," Hu said, noting long-term incentives as well short-term incentives should be used for SOE executives.     The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission is responsible for the regulation of 136 centrally-administered SOEs.

NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak here on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the UN meetings to discuss bilateral ties and other issues of common interests.     Hu said thanks to their joint efforts the two countries have seen steady progress of exchanges and cooperation in various fields in recent years.     All consensus reached between them have been implemented smoothly, with some already bringing about remarkable results, Hu said.     Hu noted that the two countries have maintained fine communication and coordination in regional and international affairs, adding that China is ready to join hands with South Korea to strengthen strategic communication and expand mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to bring concrete benefits to both peoples and contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in Northeast Asia. They met again on the sidelines of the financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in London in April this year.     China and South Korea are both important neighbors and cooperative partners. Now China is the top trade partner, export market and source of imports of South Korea.     Hu is in New York for the UN climate change summit, the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly and a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.     After the UN meetings, President Hu will fly to Pittsburgh to attend the G20 financial summit.
