Whether kids learn at school or at home this fall, Nick Rose wants them to learn and practice music. That's Rose’s goal behind his Band In A Box program.Rose has been distributing hundreds of plain brown boxes with the gift of music inside. It's a spinoff from his Band In A Bus program.“We believe it’s like giving away a box of joy,” said Rose. With more and more questions about what classes and extracurriculars will look like as the coronavirus pandemic continues, Band In A Bus is changing its approach to hand out recorders and drum sticks to as many kids as possible.“The least we can do in these trying times is help kids feel some type of happiness and excitement every day,” Rose said. "That’s kind of why we’re trying to pilot this program.”Band In A Bus says budget cuts due to the coronavirus are forcing some schools to cut back music programs even more, which makes these free boxes even more important for kids.“The worst thing that we can do to a kid is strip them of this creative outlet,” Rose said. “As a growing young person, the most valuable thing is learning who you are and your tone of voice.”The Band in a Box program has enough money to help about 500 kids, but it is raising more money to try to impact as many families as possible.“That’s the experience that every kid can kind of relate to – that excitement, that fun,” Rose said. “You could see their smiles as they were drumming. It’s such a powerful emotion.”You can donate to Band In A Box at GoFundMe.com.WCPO's Josh Bazan first reported this story. 1543
Which is worse? Aggressive driving, drunk driving or distracted driving? They're all bad, but new information out on Thursday shows when it comes to risky behavior on the road, distracted driving now tops the list. Nearly nine out of 10 drivers believe it's on the rise. But experts say there are things you can do about it.From reaching for something to the increasing danger of technology, it has become easier to become distracted while driving. In a study out Thursday, the AAA Foundation found drivers talking on a cellphone are up to four times more likely to crash than those not using a cellphone. Those who text and drive are eight times more likely.Mark Stolberg, the Vice President of training at Masterdrive, said many of us look at distractions as small interruptions we can stop at any time.“The problem with it is the traffic situation can become threatening very quickly,” said Stolberg. “So even a little distraction is very dangerous.”“So if you have to check something else, if you have to check the mirror, if you have to check your navigation right, check that then get back focused on driving," Stolberg added. "Get right back focused on driving.”Stolberg demonstrated that when a text message is received, drivers have a tendency to take their eyes off the road. In a split second, Stolberg said that drivers could miss a changing traffic light, causing potential accidents. Turning off cellphones while driving is one way drivers can remove the temptation of taking their eyes off of the road. 1585
Whether you can afford a home depends — a lot — on the city you want to call home. A modest income can go a long way in Cumberland, Maryland, the metropolitan area with the nation’s most affordable houses. In contrast, the least affordable homes are in the San Jose, California, metropolitan area — the center of Silicon Valley. In Cumberland, a median-priced house costs less than two years’ median household income. By contrast, the typical home in San Jose costs about 10 years of household income.NerdWallet calculated affordability for 173 metropolitan areas by comparing the median annual household income and the monthly principal-and-interest payment for a median-priced single-family home. “Median” means half of the values or incomes are higher and half are lower. Those comparisons revealed the five most- and least-affordable markets for buying a home. The lists were compiled using data from the National Association of Realtors, the Census Bureau and NerdWallet surveys.? WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — While the demand for guns is cooling off, sellers say there is still a nationwide shortage of ammunition, and it's unclear when inventory will return to normal. The owner of Guns and Range Training Center in West Palm Beach said most gun sales during the COVID-19 pandemic have been to first-time buyers, making up 80% of sales.Gun owner Rita Gonzalez is no beginner, and this year she has helped many of her friends become first-time gun owners."Just with everything going on and stuff, they just feel safer having them," Gonzalez said. "It's like my happy place. I go. I shoot. I release stress. I like it." 640
WISCONSIN — An update on the expected re-entry of China's old Tiangong-1 space station has been announced. The space station was initially launched in September 2011. An official Chinese statement declared that Tiangong-1 terminated its data service on March 21, 2016. Since the Chinese government has lost control of the station, it's hard to predict where and when it will fall. The European Space Agency predicts the space station will fall back to Earth between March 30 and April 6, while research organization Aerospace predicts a re-entry on April 1, give or take 4 days.Aerospace says it is much easier to predict a re-entry time than a location. This explains the wide scope of possible re-entry zones, which both Aerospace and other organizations predict will be between 43 degrees North and 43 degrees South latitudes. 855
