SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many kids are starting the school year with a device at home as schools across the state go back in session.Meanwhile, some of their teachers are back in the classroom alone, running classes virtually to help keep some of the normalcy intact."I come to school for the kids," said Tanya Morrison, a geography teacher at West Hills High School in Grossmont Union High School District.Last school year, she taught six classes and saw around 190 teenagers every day."Now, I am waiting for my students to log in," Morrison said.Instead of walking up and down rows of desks, she teaches her twice a week virtual lessons through the computer. Her computer sits at eye-level thanks to a stack of textbooks.Morrison's got two screens, so she can see the teens and the lesson."They should already be working," she said. "They get their assignment at 8 in the morning on our Schoology platform, and they just log-in, and it's kind of self-directed work, and then we move into twice a week Zoom meetings," she said.Preparation for the lesson began days earlier.Instead of a free form approach, Morrison makes a slide presentation to keep the students engaged."I’ll use an app today called Pear Deck, and what it does is it makes Google Slide presentations interactive," she said. "So each slide they have a chance on their end to write a response and it kind of forces engagement and gives them something to do while I'm talking."But even with all the planning, there's still challenges."In the classrooms, I can see that kids are disengaged," she said. "With this, I'm trying to figure out are you really disengaged or do you have a lot of kids in your house, and it's just easy to get distracted."Morrison's been teaching for 16 years.Instead of teaching from home she chose an empty classroom and campus to make sure she's focused on the students as this year's needs are so different. Not everything happens in a Zoom session."Just those normal conversations that might happen in five seconds in the room is like 45 minutes of buildup and email conversations, can I call you now, are you going to answer and those little things," she said.With more than half of the counties in California on the state’s monitoring list, most learning, for now, is at a distance.Morrison doesn't make the rules on how or when kids will be back, but she tries to control what she can."It gives me that passion to keep going and just to see that I do this for the kids," she said. 2481

He owns Social Tap San Diego, located next to the ballpark. Due to public health orders, the capacity at their restaurant was significantly reduced. However, they were able to fill the tables and chairs set up in their outdoor areas, and by the start of the game, they had a healthy waitlist.Crenshaw says despite the pandemic, Opening Day still brought more people out than usual."This is baseball. We're Americans. They go hand in hand," he said. It's definitely special and were playing the hand we're dealt."Meanwhile, there were many fans spotted decked out in game-day gear trying to catch a glimpse of the game from their balconies near the ballpark. Some fans waved Padres flags from the balcony to show support.Chip Messenger kept opening day tradition going by watching from his balcony. He has a great view of the field and has invited a small group of people to watch the game from the outdoor vantage point. He plans to share the spot with other people as the season goes on."I run a tight ship on opening day, this is my 8th or 9th opening day from my balcony," Messenger said. "So you invite people you can't have too many, but I want to start inviting people I don't know in a few days. There's going to be like some babies for the time, moms and dads, couples you know. I'll make it fun."Messenger says he usually leaves his balcony party to go to his seats at the ballpark, this year is different. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Iconic TV host Regis Philbin, who has roots in San Diego television history, has died at the age of 88, multiple news outlets report.According to a family statement obtained by PEOPLE, Philbin passed away from natural causes Friday night.Philbin returned to his roots in 2018 with a visit to 10News.After a stint in the United States Navy, he moved to San Diego where he launched a career in broadcast. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In just hours, Rady Children's Hospital is expected to get their first shipment of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. It is unclear how many doses the hospital will receive, but once they arrive they will be stored in ultra low temperature freezers, until they are given to hospital staff. FedEx is in charge of making the historic delivery.The hospital's chief operating officer, Dr. Nicholas Holmes, says most of the hospital's staff wants to get the vaccine. It will not be mandated, since it's only approved for emergency use. The first to get the vaccine at the hospital will be front-line healthcare workers in the 1-A category. The category includes physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other staff who have high chances of exposure to the virus. Dr. Holmes says a team at the hospital spent the last four days planning the logistics for distribution. Staff working in the same departments will get the vaccines on a rolling basis, just in case they experience side effects and to prevent an entire department from having to miss work at once. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lime is warning riders of a problem with their deckles scooters that can cause “sudden excessive braking during use.”The company issued a safety update on Saturday, saying they had recently discovered a bug in the firmware of their scooters.They determined in some circumstances, the brake on the front wheel would be suddenly and automatically applied often after hitting an obstacle while riding downhill at high speeds.“While this issue has affected less than 0.0045% of all Lime rides, some riders have been injured,” wrote Lime in the safety update.That includes Paul Grasso, who says he was riding a Lime scooter on December 18 on Ingraham Street near Vacation Road in Mission Bay.He said he had just gone down the bridge and was making his way up a sidewalk ramp when the scooter’s wheels tightened up, sending him flying face-first into the pavement.“I spent five days in the hospital,” he said with a “broken nose, fractured skull, traumatic brain injury, fractured eye socket, ten stitches in my forehead and stitches on my nose.”10News reached out to Lime about Grasso’s crash but they said they couldn’t comment on rider specific questions.Lime has launched a fleet-wide firmware update to fix the braking bug. It should reach all of their scooters in the next few days, according to the company’s safety update.Until they have confirmed that all of their scooters have been updated, they have issued a list of precautions for riders:Before starting your Lime trip, walk around the scooter and do a visual inspection of the hardware. Is the vehicle body in good condition? If not, don’t use that vehicle; report it to our customer service team and then select another vehicle.Once you start your Lime trip, give the brake a tight squeeze. If the brake does not engage properly and immediately stop the vehicle, dismount, end the trip and notify Lime customer service.Use extra caution in the next few days while we issue the final firmware update -- especially when riding downhill.
