SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego lifeguards reported that although about 155,000 beachgoers hit San Diego beaches Saturday and Sunday, the number of rescues and medical assists made by lifeguards was not excessive going into the third day of the Labor Day weekend.``On Saturday there were about 120,000 people on the beaches, and on Sunday there were about 135,000 people,'' said San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum. ``We did about 2,000 preventative acts each day.'' Lerum said the number of rescues made both days was relatively light.`We made 15 rescues on Saturday, and 42 rescues on Sunday, mostly because the ocean has been pretty calm,'' he said. `We had more medical aids, 40 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday. We're going to probably have more than that for Labor Day, but the final figures are not yet in.''`The bulk of what we've been doing on the beaches has been taking care of sick and injured people,'' said Lerum. ''We also had a flurry of kayak rescues, About five kayaks tipped over into the ocean. We rescued those kayaks. Everybody is fine.''There was lots of boating activity over the holiday weekend.Lerum said a person fell from either Ocean Beach Pier or the seawall there about 5:30 p.m. on Labor Day. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County will remain in the red tier of the state's four-tier COVID-19 reopening plan for at least another week, the California Department of Public Health confirmed Tuesday.The county's state-calculated, adjusted case rate is 6.8 daily infections per 100,000 residents, up from 6.7 the previous week. The unadjusted case rate was 7.2, up from 7 last Tuesday. The adjusted rate is due to San Diego County's high volume of tests, but still leaves the county on the precipice of the state's most restrictive tier -- purple.The testing positivity percentage is 3%, considerably less than last week, and that number would qualify for the third -- or orange -- tier.To remain in the red tier, the county must continue to have an adjusted case rate of less than 7.0 per 100,000 residents and a testing positivity percentage of less than 5%.A new metric the state released Tuesday is the health equity metric, which finds the positivity rate of the county's least healthy quartile. San Diego County's health equity is 5.7%, almost double the county's average positive testing percentage.According to the state guidelines, the health equity will measure socially determined health circumstances, such as a community's transportation, housing, access to health care and testing, access to healthy food and parks.Neighborhoods are grouped and scored by U.S. Census tracts on the Healthy Places Index, https://healthyplacesindex.org/. There were 31 confirmed cases of hepatitis A last month, compared to a peak of 94 cases in August.There have been 544 cases as of Monday in the nearly year-old outbreak, an increase of 28 cases since data was last released on Oct. 24, according to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.She said some of those 28 cases include ones from as long ago as April that were newly confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Due to the disease's long incubation period, there could potentially be more confirmed cases from October. Wooten said the initial decline is a good sign, but not a reason to declare victory."We could potentially have a second peak," she said. "That's why it's very important for us to continue our vaccination efforts."In San Diego, nearly two-thirds of the victims have been either homeless, users of illicit drugs or both. Much of the county's efforts have focused on those populations, but Wooten said an outbreak in Michigan that has affected men who have sex with men underscores the importance of targeting that community here.Local efforts include holding vaccination events at LGBT centers and distributing educational information to clinics that serve that community, she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth.The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One of nine servicemembers killed last month when an amphibious assault vehicle sank in the ocean near San Clemente Island was laid to rest Friday at Miramar National Cemetery.Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, was among those killed in the July 30 maritime training mission when the vehicle they were in took on water and sank.Family members say the Portland resident was born in San Diego and grew up in Chula Vista, and died one day before his 19th birthday.Sweetwood was honored during a Friday morning funeral that included military honors and a procession from the Patriot Guard Riders.Eight Camp Pendleton-based Marines, including Sweetwood, and a Navy sailor died in the mishap.
