SAN DIEGO (KGTV) A local conservation group came dangerously close to running into the armed kidnappers who snatched a California tourist and her guide while on safari in Uganda. Kim Endicott and her driver were abducted at gunpoint from the Queen Elizabeth National Park across the border from Congo on April 2.They were released over the weekend. Details of the negotiated release have not been made public. Bill Toone is the director and founder of Ecolife Conservation in Escondido. He and several other members were leaving the park just as Endicott's group was arriving. Their guides stopped to talk. Endicott's group left and returned to their lodge. They returned to the park roughly four hours later. That's when they were ambushed. "I'm a little surprised that it ended as positively as it did. It could have obviously been really awful, and I kind of thought it might be, so it's thrilling that she's out of there," said Toone. Among other things, Ecolife Conservation provides safe, fuel efficient stoves for homes in remote areas of the world. The group has been working in Uganda for seven years. Toone said he's never felt unsafe. He was shocked to learn of the kidnappings."First of all, it's low season there and so there are very few tourists around anyway, so I guess that is why we became a target, it made it a little simpler, or she became a target," said Toone. Toone said in the days that followed the kidnapping; his group was required to have armed guards. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego began welcoming some students back to campus housing, with a host of COVID-19 safety precautions.As with all things during this pandemic, move-in weekend at UCSD didn’t look quite the same."Kinda nervous, but excited," said freshman Alexis Estrada.Along with the normal nervous excitement, there was the new normal. Each student given a mask and hand sanitizer, along with a coronavirus test - results within 48 hours.The move-in for some 7,500 students - staggered throughout a 10-day span.Residential adviser Summer Thai says the actual moving in is taking longer."Definitely different. More difficult to get more stuff into the room ... in elevators, we practice social distancing. One family unit at a time," said Thai.While a vast majority of classes will be remote learning, any student going to a UCSD location will have to a complete a daily health self-screening. Students living and going to class on campus will be tested twice a month.Freshman Nicole Rodriguez says while the pandemic life is challenging."I can’t really hang out with suitemates. It's kind of isolating ... But these precautions are the right thing to do," said Rodriguez.UCSD officials are hoping to avoid the outbreak situation unfolding at San Diego State University, with more than 700 positive cases. UCSD is going high tech to ease those worries. Ongoing wastewater testing is serving as a warning system. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When the March of Dimes was founded in the 1930's, the mission was to fight polio, now the focus is to help all women and babies get the healthcare they need.But there are still plenty of obstacles, especially for women of color.Like Winter, who lost a premature baby, "What can we do to bridge the gap to make sure that African-American women have a great chance to experience birth?"According to March of Dimes black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. The organization also reports that black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday.In San Diego, the inequities also apply to immigrant communities and those who don't speak English.March of Dimes' job is to reach those under served groups.Marta Bills, with March of Dimes San Diego says there are all sorts of ways the organization is trying to promote equality, including increased funding, providing scientific research and even training healthcare providers to tackle bias."To just ensure that they are providing the most respectful and unbiased care they possibly can," Bills said.March of Dimes is also expanding a program that promotes group prenatal care.It was impacted when Covid hit, but local clinics are figuring out ways to start back up again safely.Bills says the groups give women who participate more time with their doctors but also lead to better outcomes overall because patients tend to show up to their appointments more often. 1506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were killed Tuesday night in two separate crashes on state Route 54 in the Paradise Hills area.At around 9:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said a male driver lost control of his pickup truck and overturned off westbound SR-54 near Reo Drive.According to the CHP, the driver and his three female passengers was ejected. The driver was then run over by a passing vehicle, the CHP said.The driver, who was not identified, was declared dead at the scene. The three women were taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.About an hour after the deadly rollover, CHP officials said a Honda CRV slammed into the back of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was stopped in the backup traffic on westbound SR-54 caused by the initial wreck.ABC 10News learned a passenger in the CRV died in the crash, but the driver left the scene and has not been located.The Silverado's female driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries.Both crashes are under investigation; the CHP said "alcohol/and or drugs are suspected factors" in the second collision. 1116
