Facebook has set up a "war room" at its California headquarters as part of its plans to avoid a repeat of the 2016 election, when misinformation was rampant on the platform. The room is designed to bring leaders from the company's policy, legal, and security teams together as political campaigning ramps up in the final weeks before November's midterm elections. The company has been under intense scrutiny from Congress, federal investigators, and the media, after it emerged that Russian government-linked operatives manipulated its platform to target Americans in 2016.The company says it has hired thousands of new moderators, invested in artificial intelligence, enlisted the help of former US intelligence officials, and brought in new rules for political advertising — all in an effort to tackle a misinformation crisis.Samidh Chakrabarti, Facebook's director of elections and head of civic engagement, told CNN that the war room was "really the culmination of two years of massive investments we've made both in people and technology to ensure that our platforms are safe and secure for elections. So it builds upon work that we've done to crack down on fake accounts, on combating the spread of fake news on our platforms." 1239

Every day, 20 veterans reportedly take their lives due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Now, a party drug is proving to be a promising, yet controversial, alternative therapy to treat PTSD and depression. For 11 years, Patrick, a former airman, suffered from PTSD. He said he got to a point where he felt he tried everything.   "I stayed home all the time,” he says. “I didn't get out the depression, the anxiety and the thoughts of suicide, every day."   Patrick says he found a glimmer of hope three months ago, when Veterans Affair signed off on an alternative treatment called ketamine therapy. Doctors administer a very low dose of ketamine, popularly known as “Special K.”    "Basically, it's an infusion through an IV," Patrick explains.   Some users say it feels like you're experiencing an alternative reality, but it's the immediate results after treatment that has patients seeing life through a different lens.    "I feel like someone turned on the light in the dark room,” Patrick says. “That now, I can see. Now, I can really proceed with my day."  The opioid crisis has created a cause for concern for abuse of ketamine. However, Dr. Steven Levine, the CEO of Actify Neurotherapies where Patrick goes, says this treatment is different than prescription medication.    "Most importantly, if the medicine is restricted to a controlled medical setting and people don't have it at home just to take it whenever, they feel like it that makes all the difference," Dr. Levine says.  Ketamine therapy might not be for every veteran living with PTSD, but for Patrick, it gave him his life back."I’m just thankful this program is out there and that it works for me," he says.   1778

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A monitor lizard on the lam in North County has been captured, but experts say there is another one loose in the area.Friday evening, reptile expert Susan Nowicke captured the lizard, now named "Esco," in an Escondido pond, swimming for nearly an hour for the chance to secure the animal. Neighbors had previously spotted the lizard several times near the ponds off Waterhouse Glen for about a year."Esco" however, is three-feet-long while the one being sought was four-feet-long, according to Nowicke. So Nowicke says there is at least one more monitor lizard still roaming the area.RELATED: Dangerous 4-foot lizard roaming north San Diego neighborhoodMonitor lizards are considered dangerous, packing a "nasty bite" that can lead to significant injuries. If their muscular tails whip a child or animal, it can lead to severe bruising or welts. Nowicke believes "Esco" and the other lizard either escaped or were turned loose by their owners. She says as babies monitor lizards are small and manageable pets. But six months later, they grow exponentially in size and become very difficult to handle. Most of the monitor lizards at her museum and education center, EcoVivarium off South Juniper St. in Escondido, are captured strays or surrenders. "They're thinking, 'Oh, it's going to grow up and be my best friend. It's just like a dog.' No, it's not a dog, it's a wild animal," Nowicke said. The lizards can grow up to seven and a half feet long, though the one captured in Escondido was only about three feet long. While the lizards are larger than most wildlife living in neighborhoods, it's difficult to catch because it can hide in trees, ponds, and even storm drains.Nowicke has taken "Esco" into the EcoVivarium and has him under a 30-day quarantine. She hopes to find the other lizard soon, to end what she calls "Monitor Watch."The lizard isn't the first noteworthy creature to roam our neighborhoods in the last year. In March 2018, a monitor lizard named "Bubbles" vanished from a Spring Valley pet store. Bubbles was eventually found hiding in brush near the pet store. 2118

Federal prosecutors Friday requested that Donald Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen receive "a substantial term of imprisonment" for various finance-related crimes. In separate filings, prosecutors from special counsel Robert Mueller's office and the Southern District of New York outlined their cases for Cohen's future. In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to eight federal crimes after being charged by Manhattan federal prosecutors. Those included tax fraud, making false statements to a bank and campaign-finance violations tied to his work for Trump, including payments Cohen made or helped orchestrate that were designed to silence women who claimed affairs with the then-presidential candidate. Trump has denied those claims."After cheating the IRS for years, lying to banks and to Congress, and seeking to criminally influence the Presidential election, Cohen's decision to plead guilty -- rather than seek a pardon for his manifold crimes -- does not make him a hero," prosecutors for the southern district wrote. In its filing, Mueller's office says that Cohen took "significant steps" to help the investigation has accepted responsibility for his crimes. It argues any sentence he serves run concurrently. 1229
