SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer escaped injury when a driver reportedly tried to run him over Sunday morning.The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of F and Sixth Streets in the Gaslamp district.The officer was able to jump off his bicycle, which was dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver ditched his car and fled the scene.Police said Sunday that they are still searching for the suspect.No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle were given. 514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego have been put out, Navy officials announced Thursday afternoon.In a statement, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, said:“After four days of firefighting, all known fires have been extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).Our fire teams are investigating every space to verify the absence of fire. Until every space is checked and there are no active fires we will not be able to commence any official investigations.We did not know the origin of the fire. We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.We cannot make any conclusions, until the investigation is complete.What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts. This was a Navy team effort. We had support from the air and sea. Three helicopter squadrons conducted more than 1,500 water bucket drops, fighting the fire and cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard to fight the fire. Tugs also provided firefighting support from the waterline, cooling the ship’s hull.We had 63 personnel, 40 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. We have no personnel hospitalized.The Navy continues to work together with regulators, county and state in protecting our environment and preparing to address the community’s concerns as we move forward to the next phase.I’d like to thank our partners from state and county, the U.S. Coast Guard, and all agencies for continued support.”Ship’s shifting leads to evacuationCrews battling the fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were evacuated late Wednesday night after reported shifting of the warship.A Navy official told ABC 10News that fire teams fighting the blaze were told to clear the ship and pier shortly before 11 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution” after the vessel “naturally settled” due to the fire and water damage and was rocking slightly to one side.By 6 a.m. Thursday, Navy officials said fire crews returned to the ship to continue fighting the fire.Meanwhile, several groups are collecting supplies and other donations for those displaced by the ship fire and crews at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego teenager has written a book about her choice to quit social media, and how it's made her happier and healthier."It's something I'm passionate about," says 16-year old Alexa Mendes, who wrote #Unsubscribed over the last summer. "My rules are don't post, don't comment and don't like anything."She's also removed all social media apps from her phone.Mendes says she started using social media as a fifth-grader and would check apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest regularly."I was always on it," she says. "You're always thinking about it if you're not on it. When you're on it, you scroll through your entire feed and then go back to the top and make sure there's nothing refreshed. You keep looking through it to see if anyone else has posted more."She says the addiction consumed her life."When you're with other people, you're thinking about how you're going to get the next photo opportunity, where you're going to stand, how you're going to pose, when you should post, how much you should post, if it's too much. And there's a whole stream of consciousness that goes through your head," says Mendes.In middle school, she started to cut back. First, a few days at a time, then weeks. Eventually, she quit.Now, she uses social media to keep track of school projects and homework, but nothing else.Her book details her journey and experience with social media. It also includes comments from her friends as they chime in about the way social media has affected their lives. It also has some tips on ways that anyone, teen or adult, can cut back."You have to notice that it's a problem. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A task force assembled by Governor Gavin Newsom wants to impose a statewide mandate requiring local governments to address homelessness, and hold jurisdictions that fail to make measurable progress accountable with lawsuits.The proposal by the 13-member Council of Regional Homeless Advisors would require an amendment to California’s constitution. If approved by voters, California would become the first state with such a mandate.“A legally-enforceable obligation will sharpen focus. It will enhance a bias towards action and it will elevate this on the list of priorities,” said San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, a member of the task force.Although the specifics are still under negotiation, the task force outlined an example scenario where cities and counties would have one year to reduce their homeless populations by “tens of thousands.”“These plans would include specific benchmarks and timelines that jurisdictions would have to meet for moving people into permanent housing through both services offered in interim interventions and creation of housing opportunities,” the Council said in its proposal letter.“It won’t be enough to buy your way through with putting up a number of shelters to make the public think you’re taking action,” Fletcher said. “You will actually have to find a way to tackle the underlying problems.”Supporters likened the proposal to California’s renewable energy mandate. It’s still unclear how much the housing mandate would cost.“I would not be supportive of the state coming down on cities like San Diego and saying you have to change the way you do business, change the way you operate, and not give us any money to do that,” said San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate. Cate said he would prefer to address homelessness with a system of incentives rather than mandates and punishments, but said he was reserving judgment on the plan until more details are released.The Council of Regional Homeless Advisors wants to put the issue before voters on the November ballot. To do that, the California Legislature would need to vote by June 25 to send the topic to the ballot. 2150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After serving in the Korean War 67 Years ago, a San Diego veteran is preparing for the trip of a lifetime with Honor Flight San Diego. Chuck Willey says he's looking forward to experiencing the Washington, D.C. memorials with other veterans. "He mentioned about being accepted to the Honor Flight. But said the only problem is I don't have a uniform, and I said oh Chuck, I can help you with that!" said Patricia McKeon Suter, a relative of Willey. She put a call out for help on one of her Facebook groups - Buy Nothing Navajo, San Diego, CA - asking if anyone had a Korean War-era dress. Three days later, a neighbor answered her call."The reason why she really wanted to do it is her grandfather served in the Korean War in the Marines, and she didn't get to honor him, he passed away a while ago, and this was her way of honoring him. It brought tears to my eyes, which it's doing right now," said McKeon Suter.The neighbor found a uniform in Willey's size, pants, and a jacket.Willey's daughter continued the quest on eBay, where someone ultimately donated a hat and tie after learning Willey's story."Overwhelmed, just very, very thankful for all the help," said Mckeon Suter.Willey was also overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. "I can't believe that people would do that," said Willey.Willey says he is proud of his service and grateful he'll once again be able to wear a uniform for this special occasion.
