Former White House chief of staff John Kelly dismissed calls for a full border wall along the US-Mexico border, telling an audience at Duke University, "we don't need a wall from sea to shining sea.""There's no way, in my view as a (Department of Homeland Security) secretary -- and I said this in all of my hearings -- we don't need a wall from sea to shining sea, as I said," Kelly said Wednesday night during a rare public appearance since his departure from the administration in January."The CBP, Customs and Border Protection people, who are so familiar with the border, they can tell you, you know, if you say, 'I can get you 40 miles,' they'll tell you exactly where they want it. 'I can get you 140 miles,' they can tell you exactly where they want it. If I told them I can get you 2,000 miles, they'd say 'Eh, seems like an awful waste of money,'" he continued.Kelly, who participated in a Q&A with Duke Professor of Political Science and Public Policy Peter Feaver as part of the University's Phillips Family International Lecture series, cited a physical barrier as necessary to combat the opioid crisis in America but said any border wall would be just "a piece of the, I used to say, of the border security system."Kelly, who was President Donald Trump's first Department of Homeland Security secretary, also expressed skepticism that Trump's emergency declaration regarding the southern border would make it through Congress, telling Feaver, "I think the whole national emergency thing right now is going to be wrapped up in the courts, if it even gets through Congress, and it doesn't look like it's going to get through Congress."Kelly has 1673

Former Defense Secretary James Mattis seemed to take reports of being deemed "overrated" by President Donald Trump in stride as Mattis declared himself the "Meryl Streep of generals" on Thursday.Mattis appeared Thursday at the Al Smith Dinner in New York, which is an annual gathering of the who's who of New York. The dinner is an annual benefit to Catholic charities in New York."I am not just an overrated general," Mattis told the crowd, "I am the greatest, world's most overrated. I owe New York to this because Sen. Schumer, bringing my name up in a rather contentious meeting Washington where this grew out of."I am honored to be considered that by Donald Trump because he also considered Meryl Streep an overrated actress. I am guess the Meryl Streep of generals, and frankly that sounds pretty good to me."Mattis was responding to reports that during a meeting with Congressional leaders on Wednesday over the United States' response to Turkish aggression against Kurdish fighters, Trump called his former Defense secretary "the world’s most overrated general," according to Schumer. Trump later tweeted a photo from that meeting showing Pelosi standing up while making a point to Trump. 1209

Guadalajara had been enjoying a sweaty summer for the past few weeks until the weekend brought a shocking surprise. The Mexican city woke up Sunday morning to more than 3 feet of ice in some areas after a heavy hailstorm swept through the region. As government officials scrambled to contain the damage and clear up roads, residents captured jaw-dropping footage of vehicles and residences swallowed by ice.Enrique Alfaro Ramirez, the governor of Jalisco, of which Guadalajara is the capital, said he'd never witnessed scenes like those he saw Sunday morning."Hail more than a meter high, and then we wonder if climate change exists," he said on Twitter. The government of Jalisco has been working with the Mexican Army and Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque authorities to clean and remove hail from all public roads, the governor said, as well as support citizens whose homes were affected.Ramirez said Sunday afternoon there had not been any reported injuries or fatalities. So, how did this happen?Low pressure extending south from the US and Mexico border had been forecast to contribute to developing storms along the boundary separating different air masses, CNN Meteorologist Michael Guy said."Once these storms developed, all the ingredients came together for there to be this strange hailstorm over Guadalajara," he said. The result -- accumulations of more than 3 feet of hail in some areas across the region, Guy said."The last storm along the front died out and created an outflow boundary," and the city's mountainous location helped a new storm rapidly develop, Guy added. The city is nearly 5,000 feet above sea level and usually maintains a temperate climate, Guy said. The summer months are often rainy and severe weather isn't unheard of, because of the city's elevation. The rainy season is considered June through September, Guy said."However, this was a case where atmospheric and topographic ingredients came into play to cause a freakish hail storm," he said. 1981

Glenn Close may have snagged the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama movie and Christian Bale won for best actor in a comedy. But when it came to stealing the show, it was all about a mysterious brunette who you have almost certainly never heard of.Wearing a deep blue evening dress, the initially unidentified woman managed to make herself known to the paparazzi at Sunday's award ceremony by photobombing almost every red carpet shot -- appearing behind just about everyone from Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis to Idris Elba and Richard Madden. She also stole the spotlight from the likes of Jim Carrey, Dakota Fanning and Camilla Belle.Later revealed as an LA-based model, Kelleth Cuthbert pulled off the brazen publicity stunt by continuously posing with a tray of bottles of Fiji Water intended for the thirsty guests. And it was not just a case of standing demurely in the background. Instead Cuthbert, who originally hails from Toronto, made a point of staring into the camera and grabbing the global limelight. At the start of the night, she posted a picture of herself on Instagram, captioning it: "Not the worst way to spend a Sunday... #goldenglobesfijigirl #fijiwatergirl"Pictures of the model quickly went viral, with a host of memes and even a spoof Twitter account appearing within hours.Fiji Water, which sponsored the award ceremony, later tweeted: "We're so glad everyone is talking about our water!"*senses ominous presence*"She's right behind us, isn't she? #FIJIwatergirl" 1509
