Fifteen years ago today the lights went out on 50 million people in the Northeast—making it the largest power outage in US history.It happened on Aug. 14, 2003.  Wherever you were, the blackout seems like yesterday.On a warm, sunny day at around 4:10 p.m., power plants shut down in three minutes. The widespread power outage cascaded across eight Northeastern and Midwestern states and the Canadian province of Ontario.Life seemed to freeze as trains and elevators stopped. Everything, from cellular service to operations at hospitals and traffic at airports, was halted, as everyone waited for the power to turn back on.An investigation revealed that the start of the blackout could be traced back to an Ohio company, FirstEnergy.  771

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Lee County deputy is starting an incredible journey.  He will run nearly 400 miles from Lee County to Tallahassee in honor of fallen officers.Sgt. Sammy Gonzalez said this will be a grueling and difficult run, but it’s not impossible.  He has been with the sheriff’s office for 10 years now and said he's doing this run to help families of fallen officers."I've been running nonstop, it's almost a year for preparation for this," he said.Thursday morning, Gonzalez begins his 390-mile journey from Fort Myers to Tallahassee in the next 8-9 days.“It’s going to be an emotional finish. I can't even explain what it's going to be like when I arrive at the state capitol."Back in 2005, Sgt Gonzalez had a good friend killed in the line of duty.  "I tell people I can't bring back these fallen officers back, but what I'm doing is I'm raising money and awareness for those families who are left behind," he said. So far, he's raised ,000 for the charity Concerns of Police Survivors, and he hopes to raise ,000 more by the time he gets to the state capitol."Last year, 135 officers died in the United States," he said. "That's 135 too many."The first day, Gonzalez will run about 40 miles. He said they've planned it out every step of the way.  "I'm staying in an RV, actually," he said. "I have a 3-person team from the sheriff’s office that will be with me the entire trip."My only concern is the heat," he said. I've ran in hot conditions in the past, and it can play tricks on the mind."He will get to Tallahassee just in time for the state's annual memorial that honors and celebrates lives lost in the line of duty.Sgt. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A family is suing over the fatal December shooting of a Florida UPS driver who was taken hostage by two robbers and killed in a torrent of gunfire after he and the suspects got stuck in rush-hour traffic. Attorneys representing the two young daughters of driver Frank Ordonez filed the lawsuit in Broward County on Wednesday. They say officers from several agencies acted negligently when they opened fire on the van when he got stuck in traffic. The Dec. 5 gun battle happened on national television after a long chase. Ordonez, the two robbers and a nearby driver all died. The police agencies declined comment Wednesday. 655

Former "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw was on the defensive on Thursday after Variety Magazine published an interview with a former NBC correspondent claiming Brokaw sexually harassed her. Linda Vester, an NBC reporter for a decade from 1989 to 1999, told Variety that Brokaw physically tried to force her to kiss him and groped her on NBC property. She also claimed that Brokaw showed up to her hotel room uninvited. Variety confirmed that two of Vester's friends were told about Brokaw's alleged behavior around the time of the incidents. In response to the allegations, Brokaw sent a statement through NBC to Variety stating, "I met with Linda Vester on two occasions, both at her request, 23 years ago because she wanted advice with respect to her career at NBC. The meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate, and despite Linda’s allegations, I made no romantic overtures towards her at that time or any other.”There are also no other known claims of sexual harassment against Brokaw. Vester told Variety that recent events at NBC, including revelations of alleged sexual harassment involving ex-Today Show host Matt Lauer, have prompted her to speak out. Vester told Variety that the sexual advances began four years after she began her NBC career during Pope John Paul's 1993 visit to Denver. "I’m standing there, and Tom Brokaw enters through the door and grabs me from behind and proceeds to tickle me up and down my waist," she said. "I jumped a foot and I looked at a guy who was the senior editor of “Nightly,” and his jaw was hanging open. Nobody acted like anything wrong was happening, but I was humiliated. I didn’t know Brokaw other than to say hello in the hall."Vester said that she was also asked several times in 1994 to have drinks with Brokaw. Vester claimed that Brokaw also called her, saying he was coming over. Vester said that 30 minutes later, Brokaw was at her door. "He walked past me and sat down on the sofa in my suite," Vester told Variety. "He puts his arm on the back of the sofa and he said, 'I like our rat-a-tat-tat.' I thought it was a bizarre statement."Vester added, "I could feel myself trembling. As I stood there, I asked in a frustrated and scared tone, 'What do you want from me?' And he gave me a look of annoyance like he couldn’t believe I didn’t get it. He said, 'An affair of more than passing affection.'"Vester left NBC in 1999 to anchor a program for Fox News. Former Vice President Joe Biden said he hopes Democrats do not impeach President Donald Trump right away if they take control of the House, arguing they should wait until the conclusion of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation to determine their approach."I hope they don't. I don't think there's a basis for doing that right now," Biden said in an interview with "CBS This Morning" co-host Nora O'Donnell. "I think we should wait until the report comes out."Asked if Mueller should release his report before the midterm elections, Biden said, "I think it should be issued when they finish the investigation. I've been around a long time. You wait until the investigation's finished. You don't put an arbitrary end to it.
