(KGTV) - The man accused of carrying out dozens of rapes and at least 12 murders across California in the 1970s and '80s did not enter a plea at his arraignment Friday.Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer cases.He was handcuffed in a wheelchair during his court appearance, and listened to the judge with his eyes barely open.In a frail voice, DeAngelo responded, "I have a lawyer." An attorney from the public defender's office was with him in court.He was denied bail.DeAngelo, a former California police officer, is charged in Sacramento County with two counts of murder in the 1978 killings of Brian Maggiore and his wife, Katie, and with additional murder charges in Ventura County. “They’re at less than 50% of their ideal body weight. They are incredibly compromised and many times, it’s an end of life scenario where they’ve been told, there’s nothing else that can be done for them,” said Jennifer PetersonPeterson is describing the state her patients are often in by the time she’s starts treating those dying from an eating disorder. She’s a registered nurse with Angel Med Flight, an air ambulance company.Her team makes frequent trips to drop off patients at the Denver Health Acute Center for Eating Disorders.“They’re the first and only medical inpatient eating disorder program in the United States,” she said.“The Acute program at Denver Health takes care of the most medically compromised eating disorder patients from certainly the United States,” said Dr. Philip Mehler, the director and founder of Acute.He says the center turned to Angel Med when a patient died after being transported by a different air ambulance provider.“She died and shouldn’t have died because the issue that happened was preventable if they had followed the guidelines that were set up,” said Dr. Mehler.During COVID-19, numbers have shot up both for the number of patients visiting Acute, and those being transported by Angel Med.“Our admissions went up, I think, because the residential treatment centers were hesitant to take these people, they don’t have the infection control things in place that we can do on our unit,” said Mehler.“The six months prior to the COVID pandemic we were roughly transporting three patients per month. And since March that has increased to about 8 patients,” said Peterson.Isolation can cause anxiety and depression. Both be contributing factors to eating disorders.The National Eating Disorders Association Helpline says their chat queries increased by more than 80 percent between April 2019 and April 2020.Angel Med attributes their increases to patients not wanting to travel to Denver commercially during the pandemic with compromised health.“Many people are nervous about flying commercially, concerned about seeking care at a hospital, or concerned about getting treatment for a specific issue because of the potential for potentially contracting COVID,” said Peterson.For Peterson, being able to work with Acute is a special opportunity.“These cases always are heartbreaking, every single time. And knowing that we may help save their life if we get them to Acute, it may be treatment that they’ve never had before or an option that they’ve never had before. (KGTV) -- SeaWorld continues to feel the financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting a dramatic loss in revenue on Monday.SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. revealed troubling earnings numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.When it comes to attendance, SeaWorld parks saw only 300,000 guests during the second quarter of this year -- a drop of 6.2 million from Q2 in 2019.According to the earnings report, SeaWorld had 6 million in cash/cash equivalents as of June 30. The company had 0 million on April 30.The pandemic forced the closure of the company’s parks, including SeaWorld San Diego, for several months, leading to a decline of 7.2 million guests from the first six months of 2019, the company stated.Following the park closures earlier this year, SeaWorld was forced to furlough 90 percent of its staff.A phased reopening of some parks began in early June, and overall, a total of seven parks were open for 98 operating days compared with all 12 parks open for 861 days during the second quarter of 2019. The reopened parks operated at limited capacity, limited hours and/or limited days.As for SeaWorld San Diego park, an opening date has not been set. (KGTV) -- The California Department of Education on Monday released guidance for the safe reopening of all state schools.State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and other CDE leaders unveiled a guidance document that will serve as a road map of recommendations for schools as they work with local public health officials on steps to reopen.All schools in the state closed in March due to stay-at-home orders protecting against the spread of COVID-19. Reopening dates have not yet been set.The document addresses topics such as face coverings, physical distancing, symptom screenings and distance learning.Some of the suggestions include:Students should use cloth face coverings, especially in circumstances when physical distancing cannot be maintained. Face coverings should be worn while waiting to enter the school campus; while on school grounds (except when eating or drinking); while leaving school; while on a school bus.In classrooms, desks are to be a minimum of 6 feet apart and desks should be arranged in a way that minimizes face-to-face contact.All staff should wear face coverings. Teachers could use face shields, which enable students to see their faces and to avoid potential barriers to phonological instruction.The CDE also laid out suggested scheduling models, including:Two-day rotation: Students report to school on two designated days based on grade level for in-person instruction.Alternate week rotation: Half of the student population attends in-person learning opportunities four full days per week while the other half is engaged in distance learning opportunities.Looping structure: Students and teachers will remain together for multiple grade levels (TK-8).Staggered scheduling: Start and dismissal times would be staggered based on grade level.Click here to view the department's full guidelinesThurmond said, “We have to prepare for the likelihood that we will have to return to distance learning.”Jean Marie Arce, whose son will be a sophomore at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, told 10News she is concerned for working and single parents when it comes to dealing with in-class learning versus distance learning for their children.“It’s so much easier for him just to be in school than trying to do the online thing,” Arce said.Arce also had concerns on how physical distancing would work once students are allowed to return to campus.“These classrooms are 20-plus kids. How are you going to get these classrooms to fill 20-plus kids at a six-food distance?” Arce wondered.Each school district will be responsible for how to reopen schools, and state officials hope the guidelines will help districts determine their own approach to reopening.“Right now is a critical time for school districts to really begin to analyze their campus, footprints of their campus, and to make determinations about how many students can be safely taught in an in-campus and in-class instruction way,” Thurmond said.“A lot of planning is going to have to take place in order for this to happen, and I think if they’re going to do this, they need to start now if they want to open up in the fall,” Arce said. 3151
