SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — USO San Diego's annual "Santa Store" event kicks off with a special event Tuesday night at their downtown office.The event allows children of military service members to pick a free present they can give their parents as a holiday gift."It just helps give a little more holiday cheer for our service members who do so much to keep us safe and secure at home," USO San Diego CEO Lorin Stewart told 10News.Volunteers collected and wrapped thousands of presents, including watches, tool kits, headphones, makeup kits, and handbags. The parents stay outside the Santa while USO San Diego volunteers help the children select the right gift. "They love being able to talk about what mom and dad are into and what they like, and then have that surprise under the tree," said military spouse Ashley Camak, who organizes the annual event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many local events went on as planned this weekend, several conferences slated for San Diego have canceled or postponed due to coronavirus worries.So far, a handful of events have pulled back or canceled their plans:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center.The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say. Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The convention center says in addition to the cancellation, some organizers have contacted them about postponing their events until later this year. I had been with 10News just a couple of months when one of the worst mass killings in U.S. history unfolded close to our border. We begin with that monstrous act.One scene always comes to mind from July 18th, 1984; the day of the McDonald's Massacre in San Ysidro. The body of 12 year old Omarr Hernandez, lying alongside his bicycle on the sidewalk of the fast-food restaurant. James Huberty told his wife he was going out "to hunt humans" that day. He took the lives of 21. A SWAT team sniper ended the seige by killing Huberty. The next day, Omarr's family invited us into their home to share their grief. It was overwhelming.Co-ed Cara Knott was murdered just after Christmas, 1986. Beaten with a flashlight, strangled, and thrown off a bridge alongside I-15 by a California State Trooper on patrol. Craig Peyer has made it a habit to pull over young women at night and direct them down a closed, unfinished exit ramp. He'd try to chat them up. Cara had recently taken a self-defense course and may have scratched at Peyer the night she was trapped in the darkness...and he killed her. Dozens of women told authorities they had been similarly stopped, plus there was blood and fibre evidence--threads from a rare CHP uniform patch were on her clothes. The jury voted guilty. Peyer is serving a life sentence. Cara's dad died pulling weeds from the memorial garden near where she was found. I've seen the rest of the family become closer as time passed..Stephanie Crowe was 12 when she was stabbed to death in her bedroom in 1998. Initially her 14 year old brother and two of his friends were suspects; and two of the boys confessed, including Michael Crowe. Those confessions were later deemed inadmissible; that the police interrogation was flawed. The boys were released and a transient in the rural Escondido neighborhood that night was arrested and brought to trial. There were smudges of Stephanie's blood on Richard Tuite's long-sleeved t-shirt. He escaped custody briefly during the trial but was quickly re-captured. Eventually convicted of voluntary manslaughter, the verdict was overturned on appeal. Tried a second time, a different jury considered that there was no DNA, no fingerprints, no physical proof that Tuite had entered the house; that perhaps the blood stains were due to cross contamination. He was found not guilty. The Crowe family has struggled with their grief for many years.7-year-old Danielle van Dam was stolen from her home in Sabre Springs in February, 2002. Missing for nearly a month, her body was discovered under a tree in a rural area more than 20 miles away. A 49-year-old neighbor, David Westerfield, quickly came under suspicion and was arrested on kidnapping charges after her handprint and traces of her blood were found in his motor home.Westerfield was convicted and sentenced to death. He's been on death row at San Quentin for 16 years. Brenda van Dam became an advocate for victim's rights.Chelsea King was running on a trail outside Rancho Bernardo in 2010; attacked and killed by an emotionally disturbed stranger, John Gardner He avoided the death penalty by admitting to the rape and murder of another teenager the year before, Amber DuBois... and leading police to her grave on a hillside near the Pala Indian Reservation. The Kings started a foundation that touched thousands.James Holmes dressed in tactical clothing and fired off multiple rounds into a crowded Aurora, Colorado movie theatre in 2012. It was during a midnight showing of that year's Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Holmes, from Rancho Penasquitos, killed 12 and wounded 58 others before running out to his car where he was taken down and cuffed. He'd also rigged his apartment with homemade bombs to continue the killing spree but the booby trap was defused without injury. The FDA-approved sensor is easy to put on and can be worn for 10 days. "I feel like I have more control and diabetes has less control over me, which is the most freeing feeling in the world," said Keary, Zola's mom. Keary says Dexcom, a San Diego-based company, is not only simplifying their lives but also saving them, especially when their blood sugar levels get low. Keary can monitor both her and Zola's blood glucose levels on her smartphone, even if they're thousands of miles apart. The device will be readily available to consumers in June and is covered by most insurance companies.   1007

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — You've likely seen the bar nestled next to Interstate 5 on India St., just across from the San Diego International Airport.Its plane-shaped sign pointed toward the heavens, glowing neon red as the sun sets on the city.The Aero Club has sat near the airport since 1947, serving residents of the Mission Hills area, factory employees who worked near the airfield, and service members passing through town or deployed to San Diego.MORE places to explore in San DiegoSince it was opened by Mariam Profit in 1947, originally as a place for employees working at the nearby aircraft factory, the bar has been a spot for the everyday worker.It's that colorful past that has added to the bar's history decade after decade, according to bar owner Bill Lutzius."Over the years, different groups come and go. For a long time we had the Coast Guard helicopter pilots coming in all the time," Lutzius recalled. "In the 70s, it was like a cop bar, they called it. I know it was like a biker bar for a while."Lutzius ran through the times of the day when certain clientele roll through: The neighbors first, those heading home from work second, people out for dinner next, the late-night crowd after, then finally the late-night workers just getting off a shift.Behind him, photos of past guests: Locals, military pilots, sailors, an array of aircraft nose art.He recalls the former Aero Club owners as well. One owner used to leave the keys for guests to lock up at the end of the night. Another owner was actually a group of Greyhound bus drivers."A lot of characters came and went ... A bar is an awesome place for the neighborhood because it's sort of a meeting place," Lutzius said. "Everybody catches up on what's going on."While not an owner, Lutzius said one frequent guest used to be a dog. The bar's then-owner would give it a free beer.Today, the bar continues to serve an eclectic crowd, boasting 1,200 different types of whiskey. The wall behind the bar is clad in bottles glistening against a ceiling covered with strings of lights.While the whiskey sign outside the bar reads 900, rest assured there's much more. Lutzius says it just became too much to continue updating it.But how did they all get there? That's on Lutzius."I guess I'm just an obsessive person. It may not even be logical, you know, to do it. But just because of my personality we'd just buy anything we can buy," Lutzius said. "We ended up with about 1,200 whiskeys ... There's lots of good stuff."I just had a vision of a wall of liquor, and that's what we started with ... it just evolved into being whiskey," he added. 2656
