Two journalists from WYFF-TV based out of Greenville, South Carolina were killed Monday afternoon when a tree fell on their SUV while covering a storm that was causing flooding in the area, the station confirmed. WYFF anchor Mike McCormick and WYFF photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were killed by the tree that landed on the SUV. The incident happened in Polk County, North Carolina. Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant told WYFF that the SUV's engine was running when authorities reached the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The tree was reportedly 3 feet in diameter. Heavy rain in the area caused the roots of the tree to fail, Tennant told the station. "It personally affected me a little bit because I had done an interview with Mr. McCormick about 10 minutes before we got the call. And we had talked a little bit about how he wanted us to stay safe and I wanted him to stay safe and of course 10 or 15 minutes later we got the call and it was him and his photographer," Tennant said. "It's the first time I ever met either one of those two gentleman, but you feel a sense of responsibility to them."McCormick joined the station in 2007 as a reporter, and was promoted to anchor in 2014. Smeltzer joined the station in February.  1310

TUCSON, Arizona — Ballot counting continues across Arizona Friday in a Senate race separated by only a few thousand votes, and less than one percent.With hundreds of thousands of ballots left to be counted, it may be days before Arizonans know whether Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema won the race to replace Jeff Flake in the upper chamber of Congress.But there's one not-unlikely scenario in which Arizonans may be represented by both Congresswomen in the Senate.After John McCain's passing in August, the responsibility fell to Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey to appoint an interim replacement for the beloved senator in Washington. Ducey made a safe choice in former Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl, who retired from office in 2013. Kyl, however, only committed to serve in the role until early January, after which Ducey will once again have to choose a replacement until Arizonans make their choice to fill the seat in a 2020 special election.So who are the potential candidates? There was speculation over the summer that Ducey might appoint his own chief of staff to the role or even Cindy McCain -- the Arizona senator's widow. But should Sinema eek out a win after ballot counting is completed, McSally will be out of a job, having vacated her seat in Congress to campaign.If Ducey decides to appoint McSally, that could leave both candidates serving in the Senate until at least 2020. After that, the Republican appointee will have to decide whether or not to run in the special election.Ducey has left no indication so far about his intentions for the appointment, but McSally's name certainly isn't out of the picture. 1691

UPDATE: 9:15 P.M.A man has been taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with officers at a Hillcrest rehabilitation center.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police Department officers are surrounding a Hillcrest neighborhood Saturday working to peacefully end a standoff with a person believed to be armed.According to SDPD's official Twitter page, the incident started around 4 p.m. after receiving reports about a man with a gun in the 4000 block of Sixth Avenue, east of Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego.Police told 10News that around 4 p.m., an employee of the Hillcrest Health and Rehabilitation Center found a homeless man showering in a facility bathroom-laundry room.The man barricaded himself in the bathroom and has refused to speak with police. He has also vandalized the room using a fire extinguisher.The room is isolated away from the rest of the rehabilitation center, so patients there have not been evacuated but are being told to shelter in place.Police have called on the department's Emergency Negotiating Team and a SWAT team to assist with the incident. 1087

Uber doesn't plan to renew its self-driving vehicle permit in California.The news comes less than two weeks after a self-driving Uber SUV struck and killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she walked her bicycle across a street in Tempe, Arizona. After the tragedy, the company halted testing of its self-driving cars on roads in North America.Uber's self-driving permit in California goes until March 31 -- and the company said it will let the permit expire."We decided to not reapply for a California DMV permit with the understanding that our self-driving vehicles would not operate on public roads in the immediate future," an Uber spokesperson said in a statement to CNN on Tuesday.Uber's statement comes after several news outlets, including CNN, obtained a letter sent by DMV deputy director and chief counsel Brian Soublet to Uber's public affairs manager, Austin Heyworth on Tuesday regarding its permit.Soublet wrote that if and when Uber applies for a new autonomous vehicle testing permit, it will "need to address any follow-up analysis or investigations from the recent crash in Arizona an may also require a meeting with the department."The news of the letter was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.The Tempe Police Department and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations into the crash.Last week, Boston's government asked self-driving companies operating in the city to halt operations while safety procedures are reviewed. Twitter says it will begin removing misinformation about COVID-19 vaccinations from its site. That includes false claims that the virus is not real, debunked claims about the effects of receiving the vaccine. It will also remove baseless claims suggesting immunizations and vaccines are used to intentionally cause harm or to control people. Twitter said in a blog post on Wednesday that it will start enforcing the new policy next week. If people send tweets in violation of the rules, they will be required to delete them before they are able to tweet again.
