That’s something that's escalated during the pandemic.“The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the underlying challenges as well as ugliness within our systems of care as well as communities in terms of institutional racism and bias as well as the socioeconomic conditions that lead to some of these outcomes,” said Gupta.A report touches on many different policy-based solutions that could improve access to maternity care, including expanding access to Medicaid for new moms from 60 days to 1 year after childbirth, allowing better access to midwives, reimbursement for doula care, and expansion of telehealth services. 1629

(KGTV) - A new technology is being hailed as a "game changer" by some experts as it takes aims at those achy, tiresome commutes.  Cadillac's Super Cruise, the only hands-free semi-autonomous driving feature on the highways, is now on roads in Southern California.Once on the highway, the feature is activated with the push of a button on the steering wheel.  The feature allows the driver to go feet- and hands-free as long as you stay in one lane. "If someone slows down in front of me, it will slow down our speed," said Drew Doran.While other driver-assistance systems use cameras to center a car, Doran says General Motors has extensive laser mapping of US highways that leads to better accuracy."It actually knows what is ahead of the vehicle," said Doran.  On a one-hour-long drive, it tracked every curve and every time, it stayed in the center of the lane. The driver is still expected to be on standby.  A camera on the steering wheel watches for distractions.  If the driver is doing something like reading and blocking that camera, it will warn the driver.When we blocked the camera, a green light flashed - the first of several alerts - before Super Cruise disengaged.  Doran says he recently went on a trip to Los Angeles with his wife.  He says he used Super Cruise for about 80 percent of a drive that left him feeling relaxed.    "Not the usual back pain. (KGTV)- While many business owners were forced to make the painful decision to shut down during the pandemic, some still took the risk of opening for the first time.Samantha and Weston Nawrocki weren’t going to let the COVID-19 pandemic stop their goal of opening a new café locally.“For coffee, the great thing is most people treat it even non-pandemic as a to go item,” said Weston Nawrocki.The couple has a coffee shop and roasting location in Rancho Bernardo, but their new business is up and running in their own city, Escondido, just six blocks away from their home.Manzanita Roasting Company opened Friday inside The Grand, which is home to the historic Ritz Theater, now newly renovated.“I’ve been a resident since I was a kid,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “I always drove by and said ‘I wish something would go in there’ and now we’re in there.”The City of Escondido shut down a couple of lanes on Grand Avenue and helped businesses transition to provide outdoor services under the current COVID-19 restrictions.Now, more new businesses are opening on busy Grand Avenue.“We have Daydream, which is a lovely gift store, we also have Off The Grid Surplus, let’s say you’re an off-road enthusiast of the jeep crowd, that’s definitely going to be your place,” said Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido. “We also have Good Omen Mead, a meadery which is amazing stuff to try.”Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria and Barrel republic are currently still under construction, but Tarrac said they should be opening on Grand Avenue sometime soon, although a specific date is not clear.“We’re really excited about them, they’ve been under construction for a while,” she said.Tarrac said it’s not just Grand Avenue doing well with new businesses; from March 1st through November 23rd, Tarrac said hundreds of new businesses opened across the city.“We’ve had 696 new businesses; these are new permanent, in city businesses,” she said. “The bulk of those businesses are actually home occupations, so we’ve had quite a few folks that have decided to become entrepreneurs and start different businesses out of their home. We also had a number of retailers and restaurants open up.”The Nawrocki’s say they were able to hire ten new employees right before the holidays. Fall must be right around the corner because Starbucks is bringing back its Pumpkin Spice Latte.The coffee chain announced the drink, which it's also affectionately known as "PSL," will make a come back sometime this year.According to Business Insider, Starbucks customers could see the popular item return menus on August 25.Last year, the drink returned in late August.Dunkin' says PSL will be on their menus by August 19.You may also be able to get the popular drink quicker than ever before.In a company earnings call on Tuesday, Starbucks also announced more locations will have a curbside pick-up, drive-thrus, and mobile-only pick-up locations.More than 400 Starbucks locations will close as the company undergoes restructuring plans.The goal is to move toward convenient coffeehouses.During the call, the coffee giant released its quarterly earnings, with revenue plummeting 38% to .2 billion. 911
