BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Yu Xiuli, a victim of domestic violence, can turn to police for help if her husband continues to beat her thanks to a regulation which came into effect on Sunday.     The 40-year-old woman in eastern Shandong Province has been bearing the cursing and beating of her husband for years, but has never thought of asking police for help.     "I believed it was not the business of police to stop domestic violence so I has never thought of alerting police," said Yu.     But from Sunday women like Yu could alert police if they fall victim to domestic violence according to a regulation of the province that came into effect Sunday.     Many provinces in China have set up police centers to handle household violence after a national regulation that was issued in September last year requiring police to be dispatched whenever they receive a 110 emergency call regarding household violence.     According to the All-China Women's Federation, domestic violence poses a severe threat to women's rights in China with the authorities receiving about 50,000 complaints annually.     In fact, women in China have had more channels to protect their rights and interests.     On Saturday, a hot line - 12338 for protection of women's rights was opened in eastern Zhejiang Province. The hot line was set up to provide legal help for women, including migrant workers, in Zhejiang.     The Zhejiang provincial women's federation said the province has had 280,000 volunteers and 25,000 community or village centers for women rights protection.     The issuing of a regulation to prevent and curb household violence has been put on the agenda of the provincial legislature this year, it said.     In Beijing, the Chaoyang District People's Court opened a hot line for protection of rights and interests of women and children on Wednesday. The line was the first among the capital's court system.     The hot line will offer legal aid to women and children.     "The whole society has been attaching increasing attention to the protection of women's rights in marriage, employment and family life in recent years," said Shi Yan, a judge of the court.     The court set up a collegial panel specially for women and children in December 2007. Similar panels have also been set up in courts of other provinces across the country to better protect women's rights.

PATTAYA, Thailand, April 11 (Xinhua) -- China, Japan and South Korea agreed here Saturday to continue pushing forward the Six-Party talks aimed at realizing denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.     The consensus was reached when Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met here to discuss the recent rocket launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.     Discussions about related issues should be conducive to maintaining the progress of the Six-Party talks, peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia, Wen said. MANDALAY, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), visited China-funded projects in Myanmar and other industrial and educational facilities amidst his on-going visit.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, visited the Myanmar's 3G core network, which was built by China's ZTE Corporation, one of China's leading telecom equipment producers.     After listening to reports from both sides, Li said that information and communication industry played an important role in modern society. "I am glad to see the results you have already achieved and hope you can enhance strategic cooperation in the telecom field."     He also urged ZTE and other Chinese companies in Myanmar to transfer technologies to their partners, train local technical contingent for better serving the clients and the local society.     On Friday afternoon, Li visited Hlaing Thar Yar city of industry and listened to the briefing of local officials. BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- China should keep potential polluters away from the industry-heavy Yangtze river, the country's longest, by raising threshold and readjusting industrial layout, a political advisor said here Saturday.     "We must set quotas on and raise threshold for potential polluting plants along the Yangtze River to wipe out pollution from the roots," said Chen Qinghua, a member of the 11th National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the top political advisory body.     A monthly report on China's surface water quality showed the Yangtze River was slightly polluted in December 2008 and its branches suffered medium-level pollution, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection.     China's sizzling economy has seen a surge of heavily polluting industries along the lower valley of the Yangtze River.     Nearly 10,000 of the 21,000 chemical companies in China are along the 6,300 km-long Yangtze River, according to Chen. More than 20 chemical industry parks were under construction.     Local governments had built more than 40,000 reservoirs along the river and its branches in a scrabble for water resources, which has further degraded Yangtze's ecological system, he said.     The government was expanding domestic demand and increase investment amid the global financial crisis, he said.     "We should take the opportunity to improve sewage treatment facilities in cities, and move faster to readjust industrial layout and structure along the river," said Chen, also chief of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK), one of China's eight non-Communist parties.     China has seen a spate of industrial accidents along major rivers that disrupted water supplies in cities in recent years.     In the latest incident, at least 200,000 residents in Yancheng,a city in eastern Jiangsu Province, were deprived of tap water supply for three days last month after a chemical factory illegally dumped the disinfectant phenol into a local river.     The city mayor promised earlier this month to shut 33 of the city's 317 chemical plants to check contamination.
