Gavin Newsom signed two laws aimed at protecting workers from the coronavirus.SB 1159 makes people who have the coronavirus eligible for workers compensation benefits. AB 685 requires companies to warn their employees if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for the disease.Business groups opposed both laws, calling them vague and unworkable.Newsom said the laws prioritize the state's workforce.The governor signed both laws on Thursday during a Zoom call with supporters.The workers compensation law takes effect immediately. (AP) -- A man accused of being the rapist and killer who terrorized California residents in the 1970s and 1980s has agreed to plead guilty to dozens of crimes in return for being spared the death penalty.A law enforcement source and a victim's relative said Monday that Joseph DeAngelo, suspected of being the Golden State Killer, is expected to plead guilty on June 29.The former police officer is then expected to be sentenced in August to life without the possibility of parole after the surviving victims and relatives of those killed confront him in court.Sacramento County public defenders did not respond to comment requests. 659

Russia has condemned US, UK and French strikes against targets in Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons, as the Western allies argued they were essential to deter the future use of illegal munitions.The strikes hit three sites -- one in Damascus and two in Homs -- which US President Donald Trump said were "associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad."The action followed a week of threats of retaliation for an alleged chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma, outside Damascus, where Syrian forces have long been battling rebels. 594

Robert Grays was having the game of his life on Saturday as his Midwestern State University squad was beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-13. The 19-year-old sophomore had matched a career-high with seven tackles, with his team about to improve to 2-0 on the season. Saturday ended up being Grays' final game.  With 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Grays went in for a tackle, severely injuring his neck. After being transported to Houston for treatment, Grays died on Tuesday from the injury. Grays was the squad's starting cornerback, and also played on special teams. Grays was a graduate of Fort Bend L.V. Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas."We are saddened by the loss of Robert Grays, one of our own. This is not an easy time for anyone associated with the football program," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "He was a tremendous individual. I really believe he might have been the most popular man on our team."He always had a smile on his face. I never saw him have a bad day. He was an uplifting spirit for all of us. He was an exciting, fun loving guy. He's going to be sorely missed. Somehow, someway we'll find a way to fight through it. Robert would want us to forge ahead."Saturday marked a deadly day in college football.
