When talking about veteran mental health, much of the conversation is centered on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). While both are widespread and debilitating, the mental health-related challenges veterans face go beyond these conditions.Dependable, courageous, and in peak physical shape, Theresa Larson chased perfection when joining the Marine Corps.“I wanted to be the exemplary Marine," said Larson. "To the T. What does a good Marine officer do? I had to do that.”A stellar student and Division 1 college athlete, she had been training for a challenge like this her entire life. With two older brothers in the military, Larson was well aware of the unique challenges she'd face as a female leader. “You have to be really fit and healthy. You have to be fitter than them. They're going to look at you physically and see how you perform," said Larson.Leader of a platoon, Larson was responsible for more than 50 Marines, working to earn their respect while training them for war. “You already fit in if you’re a male, if you’re a female, it's what is she going to do for me? Kind of attitude. And I was prepared for that," said Larson.But chasing perfection would come at a cost; her own well-being was no longer a priority. As the 12 to 15-hour days and mounting pressure felt out of her control, Larson latched onto what she could control. “The drug was food for me, so it ended up turning into the bulimia end of the first year," said Larson.With rigid fitness standards and weight requirements, the National Eating Disorders Association says service members are at especially high risk for eating disorders.“Abuse of fitness and nutrition tends to be the thing. It might not be full-blown bulimia or anorexia, or anything like that, but it can be a lot of disordered eating. Obviously, with yo-yo dieting, too much exercise or too little exercise can affect your focus," said Larson.Before deploying to Iraq, Larson sought help from a friend but didn’t disclose her illness to the military, fearing she’d lose her job.“I tried to make everyone realize I would be OK because I didn’t want to let the Marines down. You know, mission accomplishment and troop welfare are kind of the things we thrive on as Marines, especially Marine leaders," said Larson. No longer at a desk, leading operations and landmine missions, the responsibility to protect her platoon had never felt greater."It dawned on me, 'gosh, I’m really not OK. And this is not about me. It's about all the Marines I’m taking care of. So yeah, I’m sick, and I’m going to affect someone else.' It was a wake-up call," said Larson.Larson was sent home and said she had to fight to get treatment in the military. While grateful they covered 12 weeks of care in an outpatient rehabilitation clinic, Larson says she was on her own to continue getting help.“Anyone knows that has an addiction, it’s not just a, 'OK, you're done.' It's a continuous, daily decision and practice. And so, I ended up paying for my own care after that for a while," said Larson. "It was a couple of years until I stopped the symptoms of bulimia, and then was just dealing with what was left-- the depression, the anxiety, and managing that.”She says getting healthy became her job. And after the military, Larson helped others do the same. She wrote a memoir about her military experience and has since been contacted by countless service members and veterans struggling with similar challenges. “As a leader, there's a fine line of when you push yourself and when you need to ask for help. And asking for help, I’ve learned, is not a weakness. It’s a strength," said Larson.After earning a doctorate in physical therapy, Larson and her husband founded Movement Rx, a program helping people around the country uncover the root cause of their pain and injuries. “Just because someone is in a wheelchair, that’s not the only thing going on. Or if someone looks like they’re fine, it doesn’t mean they don’t have something going on," said Larson. In addition to free online resources for veterans, Movement Rx has free in-person training for veterans in San Diego. “We have our health care platform that veterans can use, offering mindfulness and meditation, nutrition support, fitness, as well as movement, working through injuries," said Larson. While there's more help now for struggling veterans and service members, Larson knows asking for it is still just as hard. “You asking for help, it's going to open more doors and more growth than you can ever imagine, but you have to take that vulnerable leap, and that's when life really happens." 4633

With immigration restrictions in place and limits on foreign workers, programs like the J-1 visa teacher program have been put on hold. This has impacted both foreign teachers in the US and those who were scheduled to teach here.Melvin Inojosa and Stella Indiongco are both from the Philippines, working in the U.S. as part of the J-1 Visa teacher program. The program gives foreign educators the opportunity to teach in the U.S.“We have teachers in about 15 states right now” James Bell, the chief operating officer at Alliance Abroad, said.Alliance Abroad is one of many cultural exchange organizations connecting foreign teachers to U.S. schools and sponsoring them.“COVID has significantly impacted everything relating to J-1 teachers,” Bell said. “The president's proclamation on immigration essentially suspended J-1 teachers into coming into the country. And I have upwards of 100 that should be here by now.”President Donald Trump announced an extension to a temporary ban on foreign workers back in June. Based on immigration service data, the number of people affected was estimated at 500,000 people. The exact number of teachers impacted is unclear.The restrictions only apply to new workers coming to the U.S. For current workers, it means something else.“My close friend...is supposed to go back home because it's the end of her fifth year,” Indiongco said. “But because of the pandemic and shortage of teachers and freeze hiring, her district actually let her stay and extend another year.”Some teachers with expiring contracts were asked to stay. Indiongco herself had already planned to be in the U.S. for two more years, but her summer plans were impacted.“I wasn't able to see my family at all this year,” she said. Every summer...we go back to the Philippines,” Inojosa said.The purpose of the decades-old cultural exchange program is to introduce American students to other cultures -- something that has also been hindered due to COVID-19.“I use food to share my culture,” Inojosa said. “They said it’s kind of a bad timing to gather and eat together, so right now we are limited to our actions regarding sharing our culture.”“I wasn't able to do any cultural exchange activity at all,” Indiongco said.J-1 teachers are navigating a new challenge. Inojosa and Indiongco are both pivoting to online learning.Inojosa’s typically full classroom with projects decorating the walls and shelves, will look a little more empty this year. The future of teaching and the J-1 program remains largely unknown.“The immigration ban will be in play through the end of December,” Bell said. That date could change. Current teachers fear this could make the program less desirable moving forward.“Since all the J-1 visas are not processed at all, they're stuck because they have no work there. They have no work here because they cannot come anyway,” Indiongco said.“Some of my friends waited for a very long time to grab this opportunity to enjoy the J-1 program,” Inojosa said.“J-1 visa is like a bridge to our dreams, coming from a third world country. West Virginia legislators scrambled Monday to see whether there is enough money to meet teacher pay demands and end a strike that has dragged into its eighth day.A legislative conference committee appointed to resolve differences between the state Senate and House is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m."We recognize the urgency of this situation," said Delegate Paul Espinosa, chair of the House Education Committee and co-chair of the conference committee on House Bill 4145, the pay raise legislation.Gov. Jim Justice and the union leaders last week agreed that teachers and service personnel would receive a 5% pay raise. The House approved the proposal, but the Senate passed a 4% raise. When natural disasters like hurricanes and wildfires hit, many who live dangerously close to the devastation are told to evacuate. Truck drivers who are delivering important shipments to those areas, don't have that luxury."In 2012, when I just got my CDL, I actually did relief supply for the hurricane that hit New York and New Jersey. I was teaming [with another driver], I was training and it hit. They asked me to stay on for another month," said Wayne Cragg, an experienced truck driver who owns and drives his own big rig and delivers shipments all over the country for various companies. Cragg has delivered supplies in the middle of and in the aftermath of countless natural disasters, including Hurricane Sandy. Often times, truck drivers are bringing necessary equipment or supplies, but in order to get them there, they have to take their own safety precautions so they don't end up victims themselves."When I did a run into New Jersey that hit pretty hard, when I first got there that first week they still had standing water when we had to back in [to the dock]," said Cragg.Cragg ensures he has three major supplies when heading to the scene of a natural disaster. "F.F.W. - fuel, food and water. It's huge, especially the fuel. A lot of other things you might be able to get off of other people, but fill up. One tanker full for our trucks, we can go a long time when you fuel up and you never know what's going to happen," said Cragg.Pilot Flying J, a national chain of truck travel centers, provides fuel, food, showers and other amenities for truck drivers when they're on the road. "As you track the weather, we all got a little lucky in terms of it. It took a little jog to the right. We had six stores down for a period of time but again, we recognize that we have amazing team members that work around the clock to get us up and running," said Pilot Flying J's Chief Operator, Jason Nordin. Nordin says they had to shut down two locations in Texas and four in Louisiana during Hurricane Laura. Their location in Lake Charles, Louisiana is still closed due to damage."We'll work with the local authorities. In certain markets there was a four mile evacuation order so we obviously work with them. In some cases we'll work with the local authorities to stay open a bit longer if certain law enforcement need to have fuel. We'll work out the last possible moment to make sure we stay safe," said Nordin. Often times, truck stops and gas stations have to follow evacuation orders during wildfires and hurricanes to keep their employees safe. Nordin says when they have to shut down, they try to get back up and running as soon as possible."We take great pride to stay open as long as we can and open as quickly as we can because we do recognize our role to take care of the first responders, take care of the trucking drivers that are trying to move things not only through the market to other markets but also for the local community, for those that live there," said Nordin.Wayne Cragg remembers being stranded at a truck stop while trying to deliver supplies to a wildfire in Oregon five years ago. "Unfortunately, it hit a big area on I-84 and that actually stopped me one night. It was the strangest thing because the fire kept going up and down the hills with the wind which they blocked us off on 84. I thought I was going to get by it because it was open before," said Cragg.Cragg and Pilot Flying J are thankful to all the truck drivers delivering supplies amid natural disasters this year. "Here we all are once again delivering to the places and the floods and hurricanes and fires. So, my hope is that the American public should just say we are always there when things happen," said Cragg.Bringing relief in an emergency, no matter the trek to get there. 3794
