Residents along the coast of New Jersey, New York and parts of New England were placed under a tropical storm watch Sunday as Hurricane Jose inches it way closer to the United States mainland. Meanwhile, a hurricane watch was issued for the US Virgin Islands as Maria became a hurricane Sunday evening. Hurricane Jose packed top sustained winds of 90 MPH as of early Sunday evening. The center of the storm is expected to stay over the Atlantic Ocean, but the storm's backside could scrape parts of the Northeast. The threat of wind, rain and deadly rip currents prompted the National Hurricane Center to place parts of the Northeast under a tropical storm watch. The potential for danger is even greater in the Caribbean. The US Virgin Islands, which took a devastating hit from Hurricane Irma, is under a hurricane watch ahead of Hurricane Maria. Maria packed top winds of 75 MPH as of early Sunday evening. The hurricane is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 storm by Tuesday. After passing near the Virgin Islands, Irma could make a direct impact on Puerto Rico.  1111

Retailers and carriers are preparing for an online holiday shopping surge that could tax shipping networks and lead to delivery delays.FedEx and UPS are ramping up their holiday hiring while expanding their weekend operations and asking retailers to use their shipping network when there is more slack. And stores are pushing shoppers to buy early and are expanding services like curbside pickup to minimize the need for delivery. For the last few years, many retailers had been using their own physical stores, in addition to their distribution centers, to fulfill online orders. But now they are designating some of those stores to handle even higher volumes. Best Buy, for example, converted space in 250 of its 1,000 stores this fall to manage online orders. The moves come as most of the carriers have been at full shipping capacity for months as shoppers shifted their buying online during the pandemic.“We are warmed up for what we’re calling the ship-a-thon,” said Brie Carere, chief marketing and communications officer at FedEx. “Like everything else in 2

President Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani said Sunday that the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between senior Trump campaign officials and Russians "was originally for the purpose of getting information about (Hillary) Clinton," but denied any collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. The description of the meeting, which was held between the President's son Donald Trump Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner, then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, among others, starkly contrasts initial explanations that the meeting was about a Russian adoption policy."Well, because the meeting was originally for the purpose of getting information about, about Clinton," Giuliani said on NBC's "Meet the Press," later adding, "That was the original intention of the meeting. It turned out to be a meeting about another subject and it was not pursued at all. And, of course, any meeting with regards to getting information on your opponent is something any candidate's staff would take. If someone said, 'I have information about your opponent,' you would take that meeting." 1113

Public school districts across the country have been dealing with a teacher shortage. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, administrators had to think outside the box when it came to hiring. "This year, in March, when we all went to distance learning, we pretty much canceled all the recruiting face-to-face events. We already planned and pivoted to going full-steam on virtual events," said Jessica Solano, the Teacher Engagement Leader for Polk County Public Schools in Florida. Solano says her district had been boosting their virtual platform before the pandemic so when it hit, they were ready to switch all of their teacher recruitment to online. What they found surprised them."What is so ironic is we actually had our best year yet by doing such an active push on virtual recruiting. Even our district career fair that we traditionally host every year face to face. The year before we had over 350 people attend, which was fantastic and it definitely hit high numbers, but this year we had 700 people attend," said Solano. Because the teacher career fair became virtual, the district was able to reach a larger pool of candidates. Candidates that normally require lots of travel and marketing to get.At Denver Public Schools, Executive Director of Talent Katie Clymer says recruiting during a pandemic and a teacher shortage was challenging at first. "We have a very targeted teacher shortage. If I can speak bluntly, we’ve got lots of elementary teachers. We do not have Spanish-speaking teachers, so our ELS positions. We do not have math teachers. We do not have enough science teachers and we do not have enough teachers of color who represent our students and family," said Clymer.Going virtual with recruiting also allowed districts to save money on travel costs, as they often have to hop on a place to find the exact teachers they need. "We saw a higher level of candidate engagement because this was the option to engage in a hiring fair. Whereas previously if you have the option to attend in person or virtual, you're more likely to attend in person whereas when virtual is the virtual is the only option, we saw a higher level of candidate engagement and subsequent follow up," said Clymer. Many public school districts also rely on a number of retired teachers to help them throughout the school year. "We often see our retired educators coming back as hourly teachers or substitute teachers. They play a really critical role in continuing to support our students and they're highly sought after by our schools as guest teachers or substitute teachers," said Clymer. This year, though, Denver Public Schools is expecting less retirees will return to the classroom as a majority are considered high risk for contracting COVID-19. Still, the district and Polk County Public Schools report a majority of their teaching positions have been filled for the new school year, largely in part to a boost in virtual recruiting. 2939

President-elect Joe Biden said on Wednesday that his transition team’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic is being put in jeopardy as he awaits the Trump administration to recognize his victory in this month’s presidential election.“I am optimistic but we should be further along,” Biden said during a virtual call with first responders. “One of the problem that we are having now is the failure of the administration to recognize (the results).Since the Associated Press projected Biden as the winner of the election on Nov. 7, President Donald Trump and his campaign has made multiple claims that the election was stolen, and accusing election officials of fraud. So far, Trump’s campaign has not been able to substantiate any evidence of fraud in court, and has had a number of lawsuits dismissed.Regardless, the Trump administration has prevented the Government Services Administration from assisting Biden with his transition. After past presidential elections, the apparent winner is given funding and access to documents to begin the transition.Biden pointed to the Presidential Transition Act of 1963, which says that government services and documents be made available to the “apparent” victor of the presidential election.Given that 1,700 Americans died from the coronavirus on Tuesday, Biden says that it’s important his transition has access to data and information to ensure the continuity of the country’s response to the pandemic.“We need to know about the depth of the stockpiles, we know there aren’t much at all,” Biden said. “We get to the point where we have a sense of when these vaccines come out, how they’ll be distributed, who will be first in line, what the plan is.”And if the administration continues to hold up the transition?"There are a whole lot of things that we just don’t have available to us, which unless it’s made available soon, we’re going to be behind by weeks or months being able to put together the whole initiative relating to the biggest progress we have with two drug companies coming along and finding 95% effectiveness efficiency in the vaccines,” Biden saidThe White House says that calling for recounts and holding up the transition is due diligence, even though there is nothing stopping the Trump campaign from allowing the transition to move forward while contesting the results.“Actually, I think at this point, the American people just want to make sure that every legitimate vote is counted, and that nobody's discounted,” White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said.Meanwhile, some staunch Trump supporters, while not calling on Trump to concede, are saying that Biden should be included in intelligence briefings.“The president is contesting the election, and I would urge him to give intel briefings to Biden... to Joe Biden. How much further to go, I don't know,” Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said.Without access to top government experts, such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden has called upon outside experts to advise him on the coronavirus. Among them is Dr. Rick Bright, who was dismissed from his post in the Trump administration after criticizing the administration’s response to the pandemic.Outside organizations have also expressed concern over the transition, including Amnesty International. "Trump administration's refusal to cooperate with President-Elect Biden is worsening COVID-19 human rights crisis," the organization tweeted on Wednesday. Today, the U.S. topped 250,000 deaths from COVID-19 but President Trump continues to reject cooperation with President-Elect Biden’s team on the pandemic." 3589
