SAN DIEGO (AP) — A former supervisor in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been convicted in connection with a green card fraud scheme that bilked immigrants out of millions of dollars.Johnny Martin was convicted in San Diego federal court Friday of making a false statement to a federal agent. He faces up to five years in prison.The U.S. attorney's office says Martin passed confidential information from law enforcement databases to crooks who posed as Homeland Security agents and conned more than 100 immigrants into paying exorbitant fees for green cards they never received.When the FBI interviewed Martin in 2017, he denied passing on information. SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered Monday afternoon in a small town south of Portland for a pro-President Donald Trump vehicle rally. It comes just over a week after a member of a far-right group was fatally shot after a Trump caravan went through downtown Portland. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported vehicles waving flags for Trump, the QAnon conspiracy theory, and in support of police gathered at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 40-year-old man was shot and wounded while riding his bicycle early Saturday morning in Logan Heights.The shooting was reported at 1:20 a.m. in the 2900 block of Marcy Avenue, said San Diego police Sgt. Michael Tansey.The victim was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk westbound on Marcy Avenue when someone inside a black Jeep Cherokee that was parked along the north side of the street exited the passenger side and fired several rounds at the victim, Tansey said.The bicyclist was struck twice by the gunfire and fled on his bicycle. He rode into a fast food restaurant in the area of 29th Street and National Avenue, where he was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds, Tansey said.The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his buttocks and left lower leg, Tansey said.The gunman was described as Hispanic, in is mid 20s, wearing a black shirt and dark pants, according to Tansey. 935

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Mira Mesa dentist who bilked insurance companies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by submitting claims for procedures she never performed, including hundreds of supposed root canals, has been sentenced to six years in state prison, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced today.April Rose Ambrosio, 59, pleaded guilty to three counts of insurance fraud earlier this year for fraudulently billing insurance companies for 6,700, for which she received more than 0,000 from 10 insurance companies, according to prosecutors.The DA's Office said Ambrosio falsely claimed she performed 800 root canals on 100 patients, despite not having specialized training as an endodontist to perform such procedures.Ambrosio was sentenced earlier this month, and in addition to a six- year prison term, was ordered to pay 5,633 in restitution. Her license to practice dentistry was also suspended last year, a few months after she was charged.Prosecutors say the fraud occurred between 2014 and 2018. During that time, Ambrosio billed for work she said occurred on days her office was closed and billed for more than 100 root canals during a three- month period, all of which were supposedly performed for a family of four, according to the DA's Office. SAN DIEGO — It appears the Congressional seat vacated by Republican Duncan Hunter will remain in Republican hands, according a new scientific poll.The ABC-10 Union-Tribune scientific poll shows Republican Darrell Issa leading Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar 51 percent to 40 percent, with 9 percent undecided. The poll, released Tuesday, has a margin of error of 5.7 points. It comes after the two prior polls showed the candidates in a virtual tie for the 50th Congressional District, which comprises most of East County and stretches into southern Riverside County. The shift came because independents moved to support Issa. Last month, the poll showed Campa-Najjar leading Issa in independents by 13 points. Tuesday's poll showed a major swing, with Issa leading among independents by 14 points. That's a 27-point swing. "In the end, independents in red-leaning area tend to be more red leaning, vice versa for blue-leaning areas, and so it's not surprising that Darrell Issa, as we get closer to the election, is bringing home these independents out in East County, San Diego," said Thad Kousser, political scientist at UC San Diego.The 50th District is the county's last in which Republicans outnumber Democrats in registration, giving Issa the advantage.In an interview Tuesday, Issa said he was traveling the district from Temecula to Jamul, meeting voters with social distancing.
