Parents are facing tough decisions as the school year looms: Should they keep their children in school, or pull them and send them to a school that's already prepared for distance learning?K12 Inc. is the largest online education provider in the K through 12 space. They serve 30 states, with 6,000 teachers around the country and 120,000 students. Distance learning is what they do best, and these days, they're getting flooded.It's what Kevin Chavous, K12's President of Academics, says is "dramatic" increase in interest from parents. They've received thousands of applications since the spring."These are families that otherwise wouldn't consider a virtual option, but all of them say the same thing — they're so fearful about their kids' safety," Chavous said. "They're educated consumers, shopping around trying to figure out options."Most of the calls to K12 are coming from heavily-involved parents. They want to know the data; they want to know about the education, the structure, the sports, and the possibility of meetups."A lot of the data we look at shows that anywhere from 10% to 40% of the average public school parent says there's no way they'll send their kid back to the brick-and-mortar school they're going to — not because they have problems, but they're deathly afraid of the safety issue," Chavous said.Parents everywhere have questions, and they want answers. Chavous addressed the school's biggest selling point."Well, we've been doing it longer, and we do it better and we've refined what we do," he said.Nearly 500 of K12's teachers have enrolled in a Master's in Education in Online Instruction.It was a fast switch to online learning that jolted parents this past spring, and it's something that Southern California mom Christy Hartman doesn't want to do again."I can't do another semester of what we experienced last year," she said. "It was disjointed, she was a 5th grader and spent about 45 minutes a day (e-learning) — no live instruction from teachers at all."Hartman says she's decided that if her local school district continues full-time distance learning, she'll pull her child and send her to Sage Oak — a large regional charter school that offers personalized learning.Kids at Sage Oak meet in person once every 20 school days, and the rest is teacher-guided, teacher-supported instruction, led by parents at home.Sage Oak was prepared for the pandemic before it ever happened."We didn't have to make a ton of changes," said Chelsey Anema, the school's student services coordinator. "We did have to go virtual — which is unfortunate because we love and value the time we get to meet with students each month — but we are equipped with meeting virtually, so it wasn't a huge struggle for us."Anema says Sage Oak is getting between 50 and 60 new student applications a day. It's a demand they can't meet due to a new bill that caps school funding and enrollment in California.Parents have some choices to make. And K12 recommends that parents do their homework."Call all of us. Call the school district. Ask those questions, seek better answers," Chavous said. "This is a precious time for America as we go through this education reset and global reset, and we have to do it right. You only have one chance to educate your child." 3278

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - R.J. Donovan State Prison houses some of California’s most infamous inmates but is now getting attention for testing innovative rehabilitation methods.One of the projects is an ambitious, 1,000-foot long mural scaling the concrete walls of part of the prison known as Echo Yard.It’s being spearheaded by inmates Erik and Lyle Menendez. The two gained notoriety in the 1990s for their highly publicized murder trial, when they were convicted of killing their wealthy parents in their Beverly Hills home. But in April of 2018, they were reunited at Donovan State Prison in Echo Yard. 10News got a glimpse at their life together behind bars. Lyle and Erik declined to be interviewed but showed off part of the mural project they’ve been involved in.The mural depicts landmarks across San Diego including Balboa Park, the Point Cabrillo lighthouse and the historic Mission San Diego de Alcala.The project came about thanks to help from Brahman Kyrie, a volunteer who had been running yoga and meditation classes in the prison. “There’s got to be consequences but there also has to be the love,” said Kyrie.She said the idea of the murals came from a conversation with the Menendez brothers.“I spoke to Lyle and Erik who had been thinking about the beautification,” she recalled.WATCH: WHAT IS THE ECHO YARDWith the help of volunteers from SDSU and with outside donations from Visions Quality Coatings and Encore Art Paint, they began the project in 2019.Echo Yard is classified as a “mixed” yard, bringing together inmates of different security levels on the premise that they will coexist peacefully in exchange for some freedoms.“I do it for therapy, it keeps me grounded,” said inmate David Armstrong about the mural project.“It’s giving me a peace of mind,” echoed Ruben Radillo, an inmate who will be getting out of prison at the end of February after a 25-year sentence.“Don’t be afraid of me,” he said. “I’m going to be a good neighbor, thanks to projects like this. Police in Ohio are looking for thieves who made away with massive amounts of candy at a Garfield Heights convenience store.According to detectives, a Cleveland-area Speedway convenience store has been robbed of tens of thousands of dollars in sweets.Garfield Heights Police said they have been working this case since June.“We're getting calls after the fact because when they're doing their inventory, then they're discovering the shortage,” said Detective Phillip Herron.The surveillance video shows the robber walking in, followed by several other people.“This guy’s got a bag, he's shoving all kinds of candy and there's a lot of people in that store, and not one person has called us, alerted us,” said Herron.The manage of the Speedway declined to comment on the robberies. Herron said the manager has also declined to speak to police.“As far as getting cooperation from employees in the store, we're not getting a lot of cooperation,” he said.So where is all this candy going? Herron said the robbers are most likely not eating it all, but reselling it.“Either take that candy and resell it to a store,” he said. “We got information from other cities that, some of these inner-city stores are buying the stolen candy for pennies on the dollar and they'll be able to resell it and make a bigger profit.”Back in July of 2016, thieves stole hundreds of dollars worth of candy at the Speedway in nearby Berea. Police in Middleburg Heights, another nearby Cleveland suburb, also confirmed a similar robbery earlier this year.The detective said the black market is becoming a bigger business on the streets. He said all the cases could possibly be linked.So far, Middleburg Heights said no arrests have been made in their case. Berea Police have not responded to requests for updates.  1854

Police in Germantown, Wisconsin are looking for a bathroom creeper who took pictures of a woman while she was using the restroom. It happened Monday afternoon at the McDonald’s on Mequon Road. “While she was in the stall she saw two arms holding some sort of recording device,” Police Chief Peter Hoell said. That’s when the startled woman ran out of the bathroom after the suspect. The restaurant’s manager saw the commotion and ran out of the building behind the woman, they both saw the suspect get into an old RV and take off. “The vehicle should stick out,” said Hoell. Surveillance cameras captured images of the man and his getaway vehicle. Because the man was driving an RV, the chief said he believes he may be from out of town. Hoell hopes that social media will help in the investigation. “Depending on the interest, that post might go to multiple states, we may have an opportunity to identify this person even if he is not from Wisconsin,” said Hoell. 1002
