(KGTV) — State wildlife officials are warning people not to feed deer in Northern California to help control the outbreak of a fatal disease in the animals.Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say they have confirmed outbreaks of "adenovirus hemorrhagic disease" in deer across several Northern California counties, including Napa, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Tehama and Yolo counties. The disease is typically fatal to deer and can be spread by animals in close contact with each other. The virus is not known to affect humans, pets, or domestic livestock.Adenovirus hemorrhagic disease, or CdAdV-1, isn't new. In 1993-1994, an outbreak of the virus was reported in black-tailed deer and mule deer in 18 counties. Since that outbreak, the virus has been identified as the cause of sporadic and widespread hemorrhagic disease in deer in California and other western states.The disease causes excessive salivation (drooling or foaming at the mouth), diarrhea, regurgitation, or seizures in infected deer, however, those animals infected are often found dead with obvious symptoms, sometimes near water.Deer fawns are at the greatest risk of the disease, according to CDFW.Officials say feeding deer can cause the animal to gather and spread the virus to each other."Providing attractants for deer – food, salt licks or even water – is against the law for good reason," said Brandon Munk, senior wildlife veterinarian with CDFW’s Wildlife Investigations Laboratory. "Because these artificial attractants can congregate animals and promote the spread of disease, it’s particularly imperative to leave wildlife alone during an outbreak. There is no cure or vaccine for this disease, so our best management strategies right now are to track it carefully, and to take preventative measures to limit the spread."People can help officials track and study the disease by reporting sightings of sick or dead deer. 1909

(KGTV) — Residents of East County's 50th Congressional District woke up to a new reality Monday: They no longer have representation in Congress. Congressman Duncan Hunter resigned after pleading guilty to a felony count of campaign fraud in December. "For two years now, we've had a member of Congress who didn't serve on any committees, and that's really where you help your district," said John Dadian, a political analyst who lives in Hunter's district. A 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll released Monday is shedding light on who may have the best chance of taking over the seat. Three Republicans come next: Former Congressman Darrell Issa is in second at 21 percent, former City Councilman Carl DeMaio is at 20 percent, and State Sen. Brian Jones is in third with 12 percent. The margin of error for the question was 5.7 percent. "This is a strongly Republican district with a good number of Democrats," said Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego. "Ammar Campa-Najjar looks very likely that he'll advance to November, but there are even more votes out there for Republicans."In 2018, Campa-Najjar narrowly lost to Hunter, who was indicted about three months before the election. A 2-month-old in Arizona has tested positive for COVID-19, according to her mother.Angelica Wendell of Gilbert thinks her newborn Eevee contracted the virus from Wendell's sister, who was at their home visiting recently and later developed symptoms. She was shocked to find out her daughter had the virus."Everyone's like kids don't get it, so it's not a big deal, it's just old and sick people. So when you find out your newborn has it, she's my first kid, so I've never had another baby to experience any other illness with, so when you find out it's COVID, it's just heartbreaking. I started panicking because I didn't know what was going to happen," said Wendell.Wendell said Eevee first developed a fever and stopped acting like her happy self."I had a bad feeling about it so I took her to the emergency room. The next day she started getting bad congestion and she started getting a viral rash."Wendell said Eevee is now doing a lot better. She's fever-free and she's eating again.Dr. Eunice Yoon, a critical care pediatrician at Banner's Cardon Children's Medical Center, said it's hard to know for sure how common the virus is in infants."We know that kids overall are maybe 5-10 percent of all the positive tests that we have. But we're also not testing everyone, so it's hard for us to know. We also know that babies primarily are getting their infections from adults. They're not getting them from other kids."She said babies and children with the virus usually have mild symptoms, and up to 50 percent of children don't show symptoms at all.Dr. Yoon recommends adults do their part -- keep a distance, wash hands and wear masks, especially around infants."We're always worried about those newborn babies when they're less than a month; their immune systems are not fully developed. We don't know whether this viral illness could predispose them to other illnesses, and we don't know if there's going to be any effects down the road for these kids," said Dr. Yoon.Wendell hopes others learn from her story and take precautions."Just be careful, even if you don't let your baby outside be careful who you let around them because you think even your family is fine, but you may not know exactly what they're doing. It's very sad to watch your child, especially with this disease that no one really knows a whole lot about," said Wendell.Wendell has had a fever but doesn't have severe symptoms. (KGTV) - People who believe they were a part of San Diego’s water meter reading debacle got a chance to get some answers from City of San Diego officials Thursday night.Hundreds crowded into the Mira Mesa Senior Center for City Council-member Chris Cate’s Q&A forum on the water meter misreadings and subsequent over-billings. “It’s about trying to earn the trust back from the people,” said Cate on the meeting along with the oncoming audit of more than 250,000 water meters in San Diego.“I think people need to feel comfortable knowing that their meters actually can get read and read correctly,” added CateLast week, the City of San Diego admitted 343 customers in a pool of a little more than 2,000 had their water meters incorrectly read in the communities of Rancho Bernardo, Ranch Penasquitos, Carmel Valley and Mira Mesa.Water utility officials said it’s their plan to send out the refund checks in the next three to thirty days. 979
