The Clear the Shelters event, instead of being a single- day effort, will be a month-long adoption drive to allow for virtual adoption consultations by appointment. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego city leaders said Tuesday that more than 1,100 people will secure permanent or longer-term housing by the end of the year through Operation Shelter to Home -- the city's COVID-19 homeless shelter at the San Diego Convention Center.The shelter opened its doors in April as a measure to halt the spread of COVID-19 among San Diego's homeless population, and currently houses around 900 people per day, and housed a peak of 1,300 people daily, according to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.Faulconer called the project "a public health success story" at a Tuesday morning news conference, saying only 27 residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19 out of more than 9,300 tests administered since the shelter opened.Officials said that to date, more than 840 individuals and 45 families sheltered at the convention center have obtained housing, while around 400 others will soon be moved into housing units the city secured through the purchase of two hotels in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Convention Center announced its planned road closure windows Wednesday for Comic-Con 2019, scheduled for July 17- 21.Harbor Drive will be closed to all traffic between First Avenue and Park Boulevard from 3-10 p.m. July 17, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 18-20 and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 21. The closure will affect all non-foot traffic, according to the convention center, including cars, bikes, skateboards and dockless bikes and scooters.Comic-Con attendees will also need a valid convention badge to access the convention center, its front drive and adjacent terraces and sidewalks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Port of San Diego's Board of Port Commissioners announced its approval Thursday of a 15-year extension for the San Diego Symphony Association's lease at Embarcadero Marina Park South. The lease, approved Wednesday, includes three 10-year options and one five-year option, allowing the association to lease the park for up to 50 years. The association currently uses the park land for its Bayside Summer Nights concert series, which it started in 2004. The concert series is held on a temporary stage that is assembled and disassembled each year. Later this year, the association hopes to break ground on the Bayside Performance Park project that would include construction of an open-air performance venue with seating for 10,000 as well as various improvements to park features like benches and basketball courts. The new venue also would serve as the permanent location for Bayside Summer Nights. ``The San Diego Symphony is investing a minimum of million in improvements, including many public amenities and better performance facilities, creating a new, year-round attraction on the San Diego Bay waterfront,'' Board Chairman Garry Bonelli said. ``We're confident concert-goers will love the improved access and state-of-the art stage and sound system, and bayfront visitors will love the new and improved part.'' The stage will be designed by London-based company Soundforms, according to the association. The stage will be feature an acoustically engineered shell made of tensile white fabric and will complement the look of the nearby San Diego Convention Center.
