The city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is answering calls to "defund the police" by creating a new public safety department that will send unarmed social workers instead of police officers in response to some 911 calls.On Monday, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller (D) said his administration would form a new city department, Albuquerque Community Safety, whose personnel would respond to some emergency calls.Albuquerque Community Safety officials will respond to calls of inebriation, homelessness, addiction and mental health. According to Keller's office, the department will be made up of social workers, housing and homelessness specialists, violence prevention and diversion program experts.Officials hope the new department will keep such calls from escalating into violence and will allow police officers to re-focus their efforts to combating and investigating violent crime."We want to send the right resource to the right call," Keller said in a statement. "Especially where a social worker or trained professional can connect people with the services they need, instead of simply taking folks to jail or the hospital, which have been the only choices until now."According to The Washington Post, experts believe that the Albuquerque Community Safety department may be the first of its kind. Though calls to defund police departments have strengthened following the death of George Floyd in May, Keller says the city has been working for two years on to change the way Albuquerque handles some emergency calls.Activists who are calling for cities to defund police departments say that money would be better spent on community outreach. They also say that sending armed police into some emergency situations can escalate situations and lead to violence, especially against racial minorities and people of color.In recent weeks, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in dozens of major cities, calling for an end to police brutality and systemic racism following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.Floyd died in police custody after allegedly using a counterfeit bill to buy tobacco while intoxicated. After handcuffing Floyd, bystander video shows a police officer, later identified as Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, and three other officers face charges in connection with Floyd's death. 2412

The Columbus Dispatch reported it obtained a copy of a police incident report where Courtney Smith, the ex-wife of now fired Ohio State football assistant coach Zach Smith, claimed that Ohio State lawyers told her not to press charges.The police report was obtained from an anonymous source and not directly from the Powell, Ohio Police Department. The Dispatch said that Powell Police Chief Gary Vest did not dispute the authenticity of the report. The report, which was dated Oct. 26, 2015, Officer Ben Boruchowitz of the Powell Police wrote, "The victim states that last year, the suspect choked her until she could not breathe. The victim states that the suspect tells her all the time that he will kill her.”In the report, according to the Dispatch, Courtney Smith told Boruchowitz that OSU lawyers were "convincing her to drop the charge because it would embarrass OSU if she proceeded with the prosecution.”After the Dispatch's report came out, Courtney Smith told ESPN that she had not seen a copy of the incident report, but that the claim that OSU lawyers told her to drop the charges was not accurate. OSU officials told the Dispatch it was unaware of the allegation and would investigate. Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer, who was aware of the 2015 incident, did not fire Zach Smith until last month when he was made aware that Courtney Smith had filed a protection order against Zach Smith. Meyer claimed that because charges were not filed against Zach Smith, he was not obligated to notify Ohio State.After a three-week investigation, Meyer was suspended for three games for mishandling Zach Smith's employment with Ohio State. The Food and Drug Administration approved on Wednesday a treatment for the Ebola virus. This is the first FDA-approved treatment for Zaire ebolavirus infection in adults and kids.Zaire ebolavirus is one of four Ebola virus species that can cause potentially deadly infections. It is transmitted through direct contact with blood, tissue or body fluids of an infected person or wild animal.The treatment, Inmazeb, is a mixture of three monoclonal antibodies and was created by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. The three antibodies work together to bind to the glycoprotein on the surface of the Ebola virus and block it from entry into the body’s cells.Inmazeb was tested in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during an Ebola virus outbreak in 2018-2019 through a partnership between the local government and the National Institutes of Health.A vaccine for Ebola virus was approved by the FDA in December 2019.Regeneron is also the company behind an experimental antibody cocktail that was given to President Donald Trump following his diagnosis of COVID-19, and which he said “cured” him. Trump was also prescribed the antiviral drug remdesivir and the steroid dexamethasone at the time.Regeneron’s COVID-19 treatment is a mix of two powerful antibodies that are believed to boost the immune response to the coronavirus. Early results seem promising, according to initial tests and a press release from the company.The company has submitted an application to the FDA to get emergency approval of their COVID-19 treatment. 1525

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high Monday, erasing the last of its pandemic losses, after a second drug company announced encouraging progress on developing a coronavirus vaccine. The Dow Jones closed at 29,950, topping the previous record set back in February. The Dow Jones has completed a long comeback after losing nearly 35% of its value over the course of six weeks during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. While the Dow rallied at the end of spring and start of summer, the markets were sluggish in their recovery until the start of November. The S&P 500 added to the record high it reached last Friday. The Dow rose 1.6% and the S&P 500 added 1.2% after Moderna said its COVID-19 vaccine appears to be 94.5% effective, according to preliminary data. It comes just a week after Pfizer and BioNTech gave similarly encouraging numbers about their own vaccine candidate.
