SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New data released by the San Diego County Office of Education show three-fourths of all K-12 students in the County are now studying online and experts believe that number will increase by the start of the new year.Poway parent, Caroline Epps, told her three children recently that they would be going back to virtual learning."I could tell they were disappointed," Epps said. "It's been nice having them there even though it's been such a short time. It's going to be a little difficult having them at home the whole day again."Poway Unified is one of the few school districts that are still offering modified in-person instruction, only to elementary students. But earlier this week, the district announced they would be recommending all students to revert to distance learning after winter break."My oldest will have the most difficult time with that because her assignments are more complex," Epps said.The decision comes after another surge in COVID-19 cases. Bob Mueller with the County Office of Education says 75% of K-12 students are now learning remotely, up from 68% last month."We are seeing the impact of gatherings for Thanksgiving," Mueller said. "It's likely that we will see the surge deepen for a time as we feel the impact of gatherings for the December holidays."School staff getting sick or having to quarantine are resulting in a serious staffing shortage."We are seeing unprecedented demand for substitutes," Mueller said. We need more people to work in those roles than we've ever needed before."Epps says while it is not ideal, she understands the situation. So she and her children will have to adapt and overcome."I don't think anyone wants the school year to be the way it has been," Epps said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma High School students welcomed gender-neutral homecoming royalty this week, eliminating the traditional roles of king and queen.At Friday night’s homecoming game, two senior boys were selected as kings. Most students at Point Loma High School said they support the change.Associated Student Body president Ila Komasa told 10News previous homecoming kings and queens were couples. This year, she wanted to make it more individualized. “We didn’t believe the couple aspect applied to what homecoming court meant to us and what it should represent for the students," Komasa said.Komasa was hopeful students would be given the opportunity to vote for anyone they wanted.“We made the decision to individually elect and nominate two students from each grade level as homecoming court and then for seniors, homecoming royalty.” It’s an effort to make homecoming more inclusive, no longer focusing on one’s high school relationship status, rather the impact made on peers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighborhoods near the Miramar Landfill are reporting a resurgence of awful odors they believe are coming from the landfill. "You come out the door in the morning and it just hits you," said Matty Wuest of University City. About a mile away, fellow resident Janis Deady concurs. "Like last night at in the morning," she says, "the smell woke me up out of a dead sleep." So, exactly what does it smell like? The distant neighbors are at no loss for words. "If you take the natural gas smell," said Matty, "Mix that with dog poop and vomit. That's what it smell like." Janis said she'd lived near the landfill for more than 20 years without an issue, but that changed about three years ago. "All of the sudden in the 2016 we started smelling putrid, disgusting, horrid smells."The distant neighbors say complaints in 2016 lead to hearings with the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District; resulting in fines for the City of San Diego and mitigation measures that appeared to solve the problem. But in recent weeks they say the smell is back."You shouldn't have to live like that," said Janis, "Not when we pay these taxes." A public information officer for San Diego said by phone the short story is the rain. That as soon as the Miramar Landfill has a chance to dry out from all the recent rains, the odors will dry up as well. But residents say that's not sufficient. "I hope the city would mitigate this and not blame it on the rain or other excuses." Said Matty. "Bottom line," said Janis, "It's got to stop. This is from 2016 to now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash in City Heights, that has turned into a stolen vehicle case.It started when a red SUV crashed into a Black SUV on the corner of Euclid and Polk Avenues around 4:30 p.m. Friday.A man and woman fled the scene. Police say the man was carrying a black backpack. Paramedics were called to the scene, but no one was hurt in the crash, according to police. According to the DMV, when they ran the plates of the stolen car, it didn’t match the vehicle they had on file. 553
